News From the Pit
Sorry my column is a bit short this month, but things have been craaaazy around here! My cousin Rodney recently passed away (R.I.P cuz), I also recently lost a dear friend to addiction who at the end was a totally different person (it killed me) than the person I knew; my band Year Of The Gun has been in the studio the last several days laying down some of the best music I've ever recorded (in any of the bands I've been in); one of my bands recently disbanded after 5 years of rocking Louisville (I'm bummed); I've been trying to learn how to use my new DSLR Camera (which is a bitch) before Louder Than Life and my frikkin' heel is still hurting! This shit hoits! The stress of all these things got to me a little and I did some things I regret. No one is perfect that's for sure, especially me! But at least in my mind I can be at ease knowing all I did was try to save a person's life. To me, that is worth fighting for.
It's Louder Than Life time! The big Louisville festival that has shaken this town to its core is back for it's second year and people cannot stop talking about it. The lineup this year isn't as good for me personally because I like the heavier stuff, but I'm still pretty stoked. If it's anything like last year, then it should be a must-see show. I can't wait. And I get to grub out on all that killer gourmet manfood they have. Why do they call it manfood? Women are not allowed to eat? All I know is I have my tickets, my new badass camera, and I'm ready to go cover the event and have a great time! I have media passes and could dwell backstage if I like, but I'm more of a people person, so more than likely I'll just get the pictures I need and then head back out into the crowd of my hometown folk. I don't like bugging the rock stars like most do either. I love to people watch and to see and talk to all you rockers. I'm a true ham, I love the attention! I got a few LTL tips for ya for the show.
1. Don't wear white shoes! I've seen outdoor festivals get muddy, dirty and filthy beyond knowing. Sections of sod hurled in the air. Mud divers, Mudgirls (which are always fun) too! Trust me, Mud will find a way to get in! Mud will take a bus from a wet region and then get off the bus and walk around till it finds you, then it will attach itself to your feet! No shit. So preserve that expensive footwear. Bring comfortable old shoes! Listen to a MF. Wear waterproof shoes if you have the option!
2. Don't get too hammered. No one wants to see your goofy ass hauled out of the compound drooling and complaining at the same time! Geez. I've always been one to stop when I get to a certain buzz level out partying. But some of you Mofos? Omg. Seriously? Pace yourself, it's an all-day concert! There is plenty o' time to get a buzz.
3. Bring Enough Money! They have cool booths that sell neat stuff would wouldn't find elsewhere, like the shirt that I bought last year that says "F**k you you f**king F**k!" I wore that shirt onstage when I played a gig 2 weeks ago! It's a metal attitude thing! Um, you can't get rocker apparel like that at the fargin' mall! And they got neat jewelry too. Evil masks! Pipes! All kinds of cool stuff. And yes, the LTL people talk about their Manfood Gourmet Cuisine a lot, because it truly does kick ass! They have really good food at LTL, so definitely check it out, the weirder it sounds, the better it is, most likely. Last year I got Thai noodles that were awesome and some kind of goat cheese spring roll of some type. Odd, but delicious.
4. Bring a poncho/rain slicker in case it rains! There is a possibility of rain, so be prepared. Walking around all day in wet jeans, miserable, is no fun! I did that one day at an outdoor festival and my peter looked like a raisin! Not good. Got to Walmart and you can get a poncho rather cheap! Don't go to Walgreens or someplace expensive.
That is all I can think of right now. The show is very close, so I bid you all a killer weekend of good music. Be careful, don't drive drunk, get a ride - pay some mofo for a ride if you gotta, but just remember, it's not worth it to risk it driving.
Me? I've had a rough few weeks. But I'm gonna start a new "Positive Only" lifestyle which I will begin immediately. Life is too short to deal with ridiculous nonsense. So I'm just gonna chill and have a blast with old friends at Louder Than Life this weekend and enjoy what pleasures life has to offer.
Peace out.

My New Idear, LMN Live!
Bands, Send Your Live Videos In To Me And Maybe I'll Post It!
Yup, that's right. I'm now putting live videos of live local music on my column. It has to be a real gig, somewhere half decent, with a good PA sound! If it sounds like doody I ain't pluggin' it. And don't get mad if it sounds like doody and don't plug it! Just being honest! Quite a few peeps read LMN, so you might wanna pick a good one, for who knows who could be watching! Send video to Eddymetal1@aol.com
The Rock For Kosair Kids Won't Go Without Toys, This Year!
Although there will be no RFK this year, the kids are still gonna have a good xmas, because our gifts of toys to Kosair Charities extends to the following year! So that means all the toys we raised for my November 2014 show won't actually go to the kids till this Christmas of 2015! So the kids will not lose out just yet. Thank god. This closing of Phoenix Hill Tavern and of my RFK benefit screwed me (there aren't many places like PHT), I'll admit it, but next year we hopefully will have a new venue and will get a great deal so we can provide a great Christmas for the kids in 2016. No one has lost out just yet, we still have next year before Christmas to save Christmas of 2016. I got some cool ideas, so I think we will be fine.
Fear Factory@ Trixie's Review:
Holeeeey sheeiiit, was this one wicked friggin' show! Fear Factory played Trixie's with a bunch of really good bands recently and I gotta say that Fear Factory has never sounded better! And I've seen them at the Toy Tiger and was even onstage with them at Ozzfest back in late Nineties when I was a radio DJ on the Fox. The monster PA sound at Trixie's and the combination of the band apparently being tight as f**k was crushing! Edge-crushing to be exact. The PA was pumping that night! I doubt it has ever sounded better than that at Trixie's! I'd bet my third nut, if I had one!
Burton C. Bell sounded better than ever (shockingly, too) and you could hear his voice perfectly. Sometimes he doesn't do so well hitting some of those harder high notes, but this night he was in a zone or something because he hit every note with laser precision. Dino Cavares was a beast as usual on the eight-string Ibanez guitar. His writing is sooo unique and badass. Those guitar triplets he uses a lot are hard to play! The newer drummer Mike Heller is a total beast and is perfect for the spot. I could watch that dude wail on drums for hours, probably. I used to think it would never be the same without drummer Raymond Herrera, but I was wrong. I still kinda miss Christain Wolbers (he was cool) on bass though, but whoever the guy was (it wasn't Matt Devries, like WikiPedia says, so I dunno) did good. Good crowd, good friends, good venue, KILLER music, you can't ask for more! The band played "Shock," "Edgecrusher," "Soul Hacker," "Regenerate," "Archetype," "Martyr," "Demanufacture," "Zero Signal" and "Replica." In my opinion "Archetype," "Demanufacture," "Edgecrusher" and "Replica" stood out as the best ones live and sounded unreal! I wish they would have played "Descent" but I'll live. It was a good set of the band's best.
This was a fun night! Opening bands were outta this world, too! Before The Mourning from Los Angles was badass, with great melodic vocals similar to Fear Factory. That dude could sing! I enjoyed their set very much. It was heavy but melodic as hell, which is always a great combo. I actually bought a CD from them and I never do that shit! They were very cool dudes, too. Super appreciative to their fans. Co-headliner Once Human is a death metalish/thrash metal band that features Logan Mader (formerly of Machinehead) on guitar and a female vocalist named Lauren Hart, who is a super-hot chick who sings like a demon or banshee. Cool music, very evil vocals, hot tater on Lauren. I'm impressed! I didn't get a chance to see Beyond Duplication or The Bloodline, but I heard all kicked ass that night.
I liked Before The Mourning and Fear Factory the best. Thanks to Terry Harper for making this happen and Trey at Trixie's for providing a cool venue and Mike Taylor for bringing the noise soundwise! Killer job, guys! It was one of my fave shows of the year.
I love this song!
Appetite For Destruction@ Mercury Ballroom Review:
Wow! This Guns N' Roses Tribute band is badass! It was well worth attending! It was even worth the torture of some a-hole cropdusting the place with sour fart! And no, the smeller wasn't the feller! I wish I coulda throat-punched that MF, whoever did it! Seriously though, the singer of appetite For Destruction sings better than Axel himself. Dude is phenomenal. You couldn't ask for a better Guns N' Roses Tribute anywhere, I would think. I had a great time checking out Appetite For Destruction, partying with local musicians from all manner of musical tastes, death metal to Eighties cover bands! Saw Gezuz from Incursion, Chris Eli from False, Tom Dawson of Olivia Henken and Tim Adonis of Wicked Sinsation and my drummer for Year Of The gun was there, too and he used to play for a Guns N' Roses Tribute back in the day! I saw them at The Toy Tiger! These folks have good taste in music because this was one sleazy, rip-roarin' show that brought me waaay back to the mid-Eighties! A time of sex, drugs and rock n roll sleaze! Fun times, indeed. The band sounded great and if there was one flaw, it would be the drummer. He was good, but he was very new in the band and hadn't quite gotten his groove on yet. But he did well, anyways, considering! Who could come in that fast and do well playing that stuff immediately?
Not many. He was the drummer for an Alice In Chains cover band! The guitars of the Slash look-a-like sounded good, bass sounded good, all of it was jammin'. But the special one was the vocalist who nailed Axel Rose to the note. Every screech and low note was replicated! Impressive! Axel has a wide octave range, meaning he can sing high enough to shatter glass and also low enough to do songs like "Don't Cry." I don't know the guy's name because there are apparently a few Appetite For Destruction tributes! But dude is the real deal; everyone in attendance was impressed by his vocals.
The band played "It's So Easy," "Mr Brownstone," "Nightrain," "Live and Let Die," "Welcome To The Jungle," "Don't Cry," "My Michelle," "You're Crazy," "Used To Love Her," "Patience," "Rocket Queen," "Knocking On Heavens Door" and "Sweet Child Of Mine." The band also noodled around with some covers for fun, like Alice In Chains' "Don't Follow," Bad Company's "Feel Like Making Love" and "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones.
I wish I knew a little more about these guys, but I think they are from Orange County, California. Thanks to The Merc for bringing these guys here! Frikkin' awesome show! I got a few pics for y'all. Enjoy.
Machinehead Coming To The Mercury Ballroom On November 17:
You Machinehead fans should be happy about this one! More metal at The Merc. Sweet. Check out their new music. It's wicked!
Blast From The Past - Hear N' Aid:
Who remembers this? Hear 'n Aid was a one-off project of the heavy metal/hard rock scene of the 1980s to raise money for famine relief in Africa. According to Ronnie James Dio's MySpace profile, the project raised $1 million within a year. It features musicians like Dio, Rob Halford, Don Dokken, Geoff Tate, Neal Schon, George Lynch, Brad Gillis, Blackie lawless, Kevin Dubrow, Tommy Aldridge, Carmine Appice and many more Eighties rockstars. It's pretty cool, check it out.
Kamelot And Dragonforce Coming In November:
Two rare metal powerhouses are coming to Expo 5 on Sunday, November 15. This is a must-see show! I've never seen Dragonforce or Kamelot before. Talk about some shredding guitars and soaring vocals! Wow. Besides, you never see these bands come around here much, especially Dragonforce! Yup, this is an oldschool metal show of the ages and I hope to see you true metalheads there in force, for Dragonforce! Here are a few videos for ya!
Thrash Cult Favorites Sanctuary and Prong Coming:
Wow! Looks like my luck has finally changed when it comes to seeing one of my favorite bands in my hometown finally! Seattle thrashers Sanctuary will be here in Louisville for the first time ever on Monday, October 12 at Expo 5. And NYC metal beasts Prong will be here again on Tuesday, November 10 at Expo 5 as well. The last time Prong was here, they got screwed bigtime by the Louder Than Life event that just happened to be going on the same night. Needless to say it wasn't a big turnout since everyone and their mother was at LTL, sadly. Hopefully, this one will be much better for them. I love me some Prong! They rock.
Stone Temple Pilots Randomly Brings Up A Louisville Musician To Sing With Them, Guess Who It Is?
Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Chester Bennington steps off the stage at Louisville Palace in front of the packed louisville crowd and said "Who wants to sing with me?" A woman jumped up and said "Here is a badass singer right here!" Chester then invited the young man to sing a song with him and when Chester heard our hometown rockers voice, they ended up doing the whole damn song "Plush" together. Chester apparently does this sometimes, but he was surely unaware that he picked a local rock scene veteran vocalist, who has jammed in both original and cover bands here in town.
The guy he picked was Billy Burton, most notably of cover band Speed Of Sound and original metal band 13 Level. "It was a phenominal experience" Billy says. "He was real cool. Told me I was great, shook my hand several times, Kissed my GF Jessica on the cheek and thanked her."
That does sound like quite the experience. Whats the odds that he picks a guy who has sang that same song 900 frikkin' times? And knows every word and melody? Awesome. Congrats Billy.
We got a pic of it and some video, check it out!
The Bad Humor Report:
Danzig, you got KTFO! Everyone has heard of the punch heard around the rock world. Rock icon Glen Danzig should learn not to treat people shittily, because sometimes peeps won't take it. Like this big MF that KO'ed Danzig, because Danzig screwed their time spot over.
I really like this. I heard Glen is a major douche, and the video below the Danzig one is some videographer's idea of poking fun at King Diamond, He Man and Mercyful Fate! I still love the King, but this is f**kin' funny! And scary! I used to watch He Man when I was little!
Louisville Rock Bands Currently In Studio:
The Villebillies, Sons Of Medusa, Year Of The Gun and The Tri Tones are all currently in the studio, recording new music. All these bands kick ass, so this should be good! I'll post the music when it hits the streets!
Louisville Musician Of The Month - Bassist Corey Lee Heim:
Dude is a talented bassist who has been in many bands! He is now currently playing with Incursion and the cover bands The Undercover Band and Rocktimus Prime. Check out Corey's feature on our Musician Of The Month feature!
Motley's Last Ride:
On Sunday, October 11 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Motley Crue will supposedly being playing their last show in Kentucky ever. Suuuuuure. Alice Cooper will be opening the show. So if you have the itch to see the Crue one last time before they ride off into the sunset, then this is your chance! Get your tickets now! I know my remarks about Vince Neil are kinda harsh lately, but I do still love Motley Crue and appreciate all the great times their music has given me over the past 31 years.
Trust Divided, Adds Guitarist Matt Ryan And Heads Out On West Coast Tour W/ Buck Cherry Starting On October 6:
Former Bury the Wicked guitarist Matt Ryan has joined Trust Divided, and the guys will be going on a West Coast tour opening for Buck Cherry from October 6 — 24. That's awesome news for some local guys! I always liked Matt (super nice guy) and his badass playing and I'm happy he is putting that awesome talent to good use again! Dude, don't f*ck around! His solos are super sweet. I'll make sure he sends me a video of some live West Coast action for you mofos! Congrats to TD and Matt!
Year Of The Gun Seeking Lead Guitarist:
Guitarist Matt Roeder has left the band, so we are now holding auditions for lead guitar. We are now on the hunt for a lead guitarist who wants to play melodic hard rock. Must have dependable transportation, be reliable, have good gear, good positive attitude and No Drama! We have a secure heated/AC place to practice a with a full PA system. It's a nice lil setup, so if you want to be rocking onstage with a tight, established rock band in no time, hit me up. Eddymetal1@aol.com On a positive note, we just finished up studio work on three new songs and it's the best we've ever done! It should be ready by mid-October! I even did the lead guitar work!

Horns Up For Cancer Benefit Review:
I love HUAC founder Kristi Stewart to death. What a nice lady. Her and her husband are both very good people. She worked her ass off on this show, invested her own money and treated the bands great (even putting up bands in a hotel) ! But unfortunately, attendance for this great show was anything but great.
I really thought it would be packed. But honestly, mistakes were made, too many out-of-town bands — even though I liked the out-of-town bands a lot (they were very good bands and very nice people) they didn't draw a crowd unfortunately. Hell, none of the bands drew much of a crowd! There were a lot of things going on that weekend, but I think its mostly what I've been saying for months now. That attendance for shows is waaaay down. People would rather sit at home and veg out rather than go out and spend money it seems. Some douche online was running his trap "Don't talk about the scene, the shows have been f**king packed!" Well, when you play a frikkin' closet, 10 people looks packed. Try filling an 800 person capacity venue and say that!
On top of that, the schedule was complete chaos. The sound man looked like he was gonna have a stroke from all the time changes, lineup changes and uncertainty, so he was in a bad mood. The headliner bailed and made things difficult for Kristi, to say the least. It was not an ideal benefit.
But you live and learn. I feel bad because Kristi lost out on a good deal of cash putting on this show, but her motive and cause was what counted. She tried like a MF and that deserves respect and she has mine. Sometimes things simply don't go your way. Like my Rock For Kosair show last year when the headliner band was nowhere to be found! I found them in a closet looking all cracked out. WTF. Uncool. But controlling musicians is like trying to control a great white shark in the ocean. Good luck on that! I just wish more people would have come out to support Kristi and our rock scene and the cause! Fighting cancer. I'd like to thank all the HUAC crew, Angela, Alex and anyone else I forgot!
I hope Kristi don't give up on this and she comes back next year and kicks some ass. I would be glad to help out.
Lmn Live - Krosjoint's Last Show At Horns Up Against Cancer Benefit.
It's been a wild ride and some pretty bitchin' shows for the last five years, but all things must come to an end. I had a blast playing music with these guys and wish them the best. Extra special thanks to our drummer Jon Schindler, who came in on short notice, learned the songs and killed it! He didn't have to do that, knowing we were breaking up soon, but he did it anyways even with a sick mother in the hospital and I am very grateful to him for that! You rock, bro.
Lmn Live — Unleashed, Getting The Led Out!
I love these uber-talented kids! The future of louisville rock! Things are looking up, I'd say! Listen to them get the Led Out! Rockin' Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song."
