News From the Pit
Hello all, I hope y'all have been having one hell of a summer. So much to do, so little time to do it with.
I've been chilling at home a lil' bit more than usual, preparing / saving up cash for my second big trip to The Big Easy and Gulf Shores. I am freaking exhausted. Way too much work and no play. And you know what they say “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!” Yup. No running on this trip, just chillin' like a ‘villian in a condo right on the beach. Can't wait!
I am looking forward to Louder Than Life coming up as well!
That is always a great time and it's great seeing so many old friends there. Things have been better lately thank god. Last month sucked because I had a summer cold and that facial nerve crap happened!
BTW, thank you for all the get well wishes and stuff. You rock!
Talk about a doo-doo train!
That summer cold sucked!
Oh well, I'm trying to not let small things bother me. It seems I've been pissing off all kinds of people with my honesty lately. First I stood up to a racist supervisor at one of my jobs who treated their own countrymen better than others, and rules didn't apply to those people, either. I told our boss what was going on because it was wrong, and it started a shitstorm. I am not backing down though!
I fight for the good of everyone there.
I was watching good people get treated like crap simply because of where they were from. It was sickening. I will still work there but I'm not taking that horseshit and will bring it up every time it happens again!
Hopefully they will do the right thing before things get much worse.
Then a venue I wrote about got mad at me because I vented about some unbelievable nonsense we went through at our last show there. I love the place. I love the staff. I even love the guy that runs the place. We've always gotten along. But the scheduling / non-organization / egos running rampant that day / for that show was horrid. We loved playing with those bands and had fun, but trust me, anyone would have been upset with the stuff that went down before the show even started. We had every right to be pissed. There should have definitely been someone in charge of a smooth running show schedule and loadin / soundcheck. There wasn't. Even the sound guys were apologizing to us, and were unsure what was going on. And that's not the only place that has that problem I've noticed either (so I wasn't saying it was just them either), so it's not so rare an occurence these days.
So... I heard from some deadbeat that I wouldn't likely get a show there again. That would be a very unmoral and unfair decision on the venue’s part IF true. Really? You are going to ban my band members as well? You are going to ban the drummer who let you use his drums for the entire backline at your benefit concert? Because I simply told the truth of our experience there? Wow. I hope it is not true. Because that would be a shitty shitty thing to do to a person / band who has been on your side from the beginning. It would be a shame to punish such good people for such a petty reason.
As some of you know, I am somewhat of a fighter for justice in our music scene. Over these many years as a DJ / Promoter / Columnist I have written / talked about many incidents, and I have called out many – a – weasel / thief / scammer / fraud / douchebag, etc. There has been many a war, and I am a war-torn veteran of many sorts.
I've critisized bands / musicians / promoters / DJ's / venues galore!
A lot of MF'ers don't like the truth, so they get to hating, drinking deeply of that fruit punch hatorade. Yeah, I'm pretty honest and blunt, and nowhere near perfect myself, and I'll be the first one to tell you that!
But I don't lie. And I'm not very good at sugarcoating things, so when I say things, I'm really only trying to fix things that need improvements. And let's ALL be honest here, no one listens to a weak person’s advice. You gotta let people know you mean business. Speak your mind, be honest, and risk it all. So don't be soooo offended by my non-sugarcoated words. I promise they are true. Like the time I criticized a guitarist’s crappy gear in a show review. I said he played well but needs an upgrade in gear. He kinda got butt hurt a little, but the next time I saw them out he had a new amp that sounded 50 times better than the piece of doody he used to have!
Or the time a DJ on LRS was playing his own band all the time, I called dude out about that shit and before you know it – plenty of other worthy bands were getting new exposure because of his boss seeing the piece I wrote. Or any of the 100 incidents that I have in my resume!
As a writer, you cannot be timid or afraid to write the truth.
I'm really not a dick. I am an ally. An ally who is maybe a smidge too honest at times.
Yes, I could work on my deliverance a bit, but I am confident in my morals as a decent human being to make those correct right / wrong judgments. And ya know what? I have a pretty good track record going for me on making these choices and battles. So far I have never been proved wrong.
So get over my brutal honesty and realize the truth for what it is.
I'm on you f**kers side and I'll lay my ass on the line like I always have!
There are a lot of shows coming through, something for everyone from Eighties hair metal to new-age grindcore death metal!
A slew of bands to definitely check out are – Angra, Moonspell, Great White, Bulletboys, Phil Anselmo, Sebastian Bach, Judas Priest, Louder than Life, Whitechapel, Metalfest 7, Candlebox, Kingdom Come, FFDP / Breaking Benjamin / Nothing More and guitarist Eric Johnson.
I have included videos for you people so you can hear what you would be missing if you do not attend anything!
I love scrolling / looking around for some classic or new footage to show you peeps! It's one of the funnest things about my column to do.
I'm pretty happy these days. Our band Year Of The Gun is opening for Jack Russell's Great White and The Bulletboys on October 16 at The Mercury Ballroom (how often do you get to open for bands you loved growing up?) and I have an outtatown show coming up in September in Lexington with some old friends, so I'd say I'm a pretty lucky guy who gets to do what he loves.
Playing music. Covering music. Going to see / hear plenty o' music.
I know I'm not perfect. Who is? But one thing is for certain Louisville.
I'd say you could do a lot worse...
I'll see you peep's in a few weeks, I'm headed to the beach!!!
Peace out phuckerz....
The Metal Grapevine
Louder Than Life Drawing Near!!
I will see you there!
I've covered these historic Louisville festivals from the beginning and I wouldn't miss it for nothing. The music, the people, the food!
Three days this time though!
I hope my old ass can deal with all that walking. It's going to be rough but I'm a tough ole sumbitch and will prevail. Danny Wimmer is one smart cookie though, for adding that extra day!
God bless LTL for coming here. As well as the lineup I have included some videos of some of the bands. Some are recent performances!
Enjoy!

Jack Russell's Great White/Bulletboys/Enuff Znuff Coming to The Merc on October 16, and my band is Opening! Wow!
This is a badass Eighties lineup right here!
I'm a serious fan of Jack Russell's voice, and of the Bulletboys, and I like songs by Enuff Znuff, too!
So I'm very stoked that my band Year Of The Gun is opening. I wanna see all of you perople there early to support us local guys!
In my opinion, Jack Russell's voice is one of the most underrated voices in rock!
To prove so, check out this video of Jack performing some Led Zeppelin. I've heard live Robert Plant before, and he never sounded this good live.
Candlebox Just Announced for October 21 at Mercury Ballroom:
I saw them the last time they were there, and it rocked. Don't miss it this time!
Sebastian Bach coming to Trixie's:
Awesome. I have always admired Sebastian Bach’s voice. I'm definitely going to try to cover this show. I had the pleasure of meeting and partying with him once when I was with 100.5 The Fox, and he is one cool guy. A very underrated vocalist as well, in my opinion. Check out this live footage. Dude can sing and is extremely hard to reproduce live.
Whitechapel coming to Trixie's on August 12:
Those Tennessee metal monsters are back! I was them at Mercury Ballroom and it was sick. Be sure to come early for the kickass local support Stout and Wake Up In Tsunami.
South American Power-Metalists Angra come to Louisville for the first time on October 12:
Brazilian power metal merchants are coming to Louisville finally. I remember playing this badass band on our old metal radio show “The Attitude Network” way back in the late nineties. I'd love to see them and I will be trying to make this one for sure.
Kingdom Come coming to Bourbon Hall on October 14: Wow!
I remember these guys well, and loved them!
Drummer James Kottak is from Louisville. He is a good guy. When he was playing with the Scorpions he had me come to Nashville backstage for some sweet coverage. I have a history with these guys, kinda. I saw Kingdom Come at Monsters Of Rock in 1988. It was Van Halen, Metallica, Dokken, Kingdom Come, Scorpions. Kingdom Come did excellent and blew half the bands away that day. I'll never forget that day because I was on some pretty powerful LSD and was trippin' balls. The seats in the Hoosierdome sucked and my back was freaking killing me.
I'm quite anxious to hear the new vocalist Keith St John. To me, it's very hard picturing a KC without former vocalist Lenny Wolf (I loved his voice!), but I'm willing to see what the goods are like these days. Surely these super talented cats have found a badbass MF in the former Montrose/Lynch Mob/Nazareth/Quiet Riot singer. I can't wait to hear these guys once again!
It will be like 1988 all over again!
And it looks like its all the original members besides Mr Wolf, so this promises to be one special night. I gotta see this!
And support a Louisville kid made good, Mr James Kottak. I absolutely love this song!
Maybe I'll do an interview with James Kottak next month!
Guitarist Eric Johnson coming to the Mercury Ballroom:
This dude kills on guitar!
Go see him.
Phil Anselmo returns! With his new band The Illegals. On Sunday, Sept 23 at Diamond Concert Hall:
This should be an interesting show. Don't miss openers Rebels and Devils.
Judas Priest/Deep Purple coming to Riverbend on August 21:
Jesus Palomino, what a lineup. I've never seen DP and Priest is my all time favorite band. I will miss Glenn if he can't make it to this show, but I still gotta support the juggernaut that is Priest.
Marylyn Manson coming to Louevil:
Sunday, August 5 at Louisville Palace. Never was a fan. Fellas, there will be lots of cute goth ladies there. Here's some live Manson for ya.
Bourbon and Beyond Lineup:
Located at Champions Park, just like Louder Than Life, is Bourbon and Beyond, another festival that sounds like a lot of fun. It's on Saturday, Sept 22 and Sunday, Sept 23. Last year wasn't really my style of music, but this year looks pretty darn good!
Friday, it's Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot, John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow and others. Saturday features Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters w/Sting, Blackberry Smoke, Gov't Mule, Counting Crows and others. I really may have to cover this!!
Yum, thinking about the food!!
The Jeremy Wade Noe Metalfest 2018 Lineup
Located at 3850 Beechgrove Rd Shepherdsville KY 40165, Allen Ashbaugh's annual outdoor metal bash is coming up and I wish I didn't have a wedding to attend or I woulda been attending and playing that MF as usual. Here is the lineup!
It's all-ages too!
Friday, August 3 – Artwork for the Blind, Ohlm, Goodfellas, Hidden Foundation, Lethean, Corpus Malum and Kur.
Saturday, August 4 – Descention (last show ever), Granshaw, Lurker at The Threshold, Societys Plague, Creature Of Exile, Inner Decay, Eulogy In Blood, Stout and Two Pump Chump.
Fire Department Reunion coming on October 13 at Mercury Ballroom:
Those crazy oldsters never give up and are coming back one more time to rock yer asses off. Opening the show is the amazing young band Doppelganger, so be sure to be early for those cats!
Fire Department is Louisville history!
Words cannot describe the times I've had partying with these guys back in the heyday of of the Toy Tiger. Pure debauchery. Be there!
The Paddock Pub is Becoming THE SPOT:
Louie the local guy has got the Paddock Pub going pretty good now. People are regularly attending his shows right by my house!
I sometimes go over and check out bands at random. I love that I can just mosey on over in my PJ's or hardly dressed up, hair all up in a manbun and all. Ha!
Great Job Louie!
Keep it up. I'm gonna need to play there pretty soon!
I'm just waiting for the right bill/lineup of bands that would fit well. Keep me in mind, Louie!
Metallica is coming to Louisville – in 2019:
Yup, it's true, March 9th at The Yum Center in 2019. My dumbass saw the announcement and without thinking thought it was this March. Shit, that's a long way off!
I might be dead by then. One of the band members might be dead. Well, this should be pretty frickin' cool when it finally comes down. Knowing my luck, I'll plug the crap outta it for over a year and get the flu the night before the show in 2019. This will be a hot ticket when it happens, so you might want to secure your tickets when they finally go on sale. It's been a few years since I've seen them. Here is a bit of Louisville Rock History for ya!
I saw them in 1986 at Cardinal Stadium with Ozzy. And get this – Metallica got booed horribly. Nobody knew who they were, except me. And the crowd was all worked up for Ozzy. They knew not what they did.
Wyld Ryde E.P Review:
I'm checking out Wyld Ryde's new E.P City Streets. “You Got Something To Hide” is kinda catchy. I actually remember seeing this song live at a show, and thinking that the chorus was catchy. I was singing it for hours after the show!
It's basic hard rock with melodic vocals. I'm not a fan of the recording studio they used, so far. The drums sound thin and there is no thump in them. Chief the singer’s voice sounds good though. I hafta say that I think you gotta see Wyld Ryde live in action to get the full feel of the band as a whole. Listening to this after seeing these guys live is like phone sex: non-gratifying and leaves you unfulfilled. Yeah, these cats definitely come more alive and sound much better in action. The song itself is pretty good and rockin'. Guitarists Chief and Tommy Stamper work well together. Tommy is a throwback to the good old days!
I met that guy like 900 years ago and he is still a helluva guitarist and good dude. Bassist Mick Watkins has come into his own as a guitarist turned bassist. Much better Mick!
“City Streets” is an anthemic tune from the get-go. I like this one, too. Chief's voice sounds better on this tune. Good lyrics. It's very Eighties-ish but I love the Eighties so I guess they picked the right MF to send it to. Shredding guitar solo from I'm guessing Tommy Stamper. Killer!
Chief's voice is good. He can sing, wail, growl, and do whatever the song calls for really. No complaints here. And I don't think I've ever heard him sing off-key!
And he plays guitar at the same time as well. I'm not so great at that. I would have liked to have heard more bass in the mix and thicker drums though. The drums sound like they were recorded badly. Waaay too thin!
The playing is fine, it's the sound quality. That is the only bummer so far. The guitar tones sound fat. “Pushin” is kinda a speed metal endeavor for this Louevil hard rock act. Fast, muted guitar riffs are the order of the day in this speedster. The guitar solo in this one rocks!
My favorite solos and guitar riffs so far. I bet this one is fun to play. The drumming of Nigel Paul is rockin' but the oomph is just not there soundwise. That would be my main complaint about this kickin E.P by these Louisville rockeres. These guys have been playing out a lot this summer and making a name for themselves. They don't care about trends or trying to be something they aren't. They don't sound like the cookie monster or 1000 other metalcore bands that sound exactly the same. Their band name doesn't look like a thorn bush laid upon another two thorn bushes!
I can really relate with these guys. It's just good ole fashioned rock n' roll fun. So do yourself a favor – check out Wyld Ryde when you see the name!
Here is a sample of their brand new music. They sound better live though!
Trust me!
Rock Royalty Teams Up!
The Dead Daisies? Who Are They?
The Dead Daisies are guitarist Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Singer/guitarist John Corabi (The Scream, Motley Crue), bassist Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake), drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Bad English) and guitarist David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink). All very experienced touring musicians. These guys will be at Diamond Pub Concert Hall on August 19. I saw Doug Aldrich with Whitesnake once about 12 years ago and omg, that guy is unfreaking real on guitar. One of the best!
And you all know Mr Corabi can sing!
I saw him in Lexington about 4 or 5 years ago at Buster’s. Great musicians!
I was hoping to get on this bill, but it wasn't meant to be I reckon. It's all good!
Just make sure you peeps get up there to see John and Doug tear it up!
The Bad Humor Report – A Venue in town Counts How Many People come to see you!?! Wow:
I've heard it all now, people!
Yeah, venues want you to sell tickets and do all this crap you never had to do to be able to play out. But one venue in particular is out of line like a MF. This venue gets a list of people who are coming to see you, and they write down every person who comes, and if they don’t show up, the venue gets mad at you and downs you!
I'm not sure this is true, but the source I heard it from is pretty reliable and I don't think they would lie. I would actually like to play this venue, but asshole tactics and pressuring MF'ers like that isn't cool. We rockers have enough to do just keeping a band going with all of life’s trials and tribulations. I don't mind trying extra hard to bring peeps, but to punish the bands when people simply don't want to get out as much anymore is not the way to do things. I'm going to follow up on this a little more and find out what I can. Boy do I miss the days when there was automatically a built-in crowd at shows like at the PHT and Toy Tiger. STAY TUNED!
Five Finger Death Punch/Breaking Benjamin/Nothing More/Bad Wolves coming to Riverbend on August 28:
Another cool show right here. I dig FFDP, BB and Nothing More. That singer for Nothing More is really good. Attend!
Musician Of The Month – This month our feature is Drummer Billy Masterson of Boozer and The Asshaulers.
Be sure to check out Billy's interview.
The Metallica Tribute Returns!
The Four Horsemen return to the Mercury Ballroom on Saturday, August 11. Be there and experience the sounds of Metallica.
Krosjoint NEWS:
As some of you know, I have been busy reforming Krosjoint! I think we may have found our full lineup! Things are sounding good!
I will release the names of the new lineup next month, but I will say this. This shit is sounding pretty damn good for the few practices we have had as a whole band!
Three years is a long time to not play your songs, but a few listens and we were right back in business. And business is apparently good!
We have a badass bassist that adds a new dimension to the music, and a “young guns” guitarist with a great attitude!
We also got some excellent new gear that destroys!
Unfortunately we had a death in the family of one of our band members and we will need to take a few weeks off to deal with that. My deepest sympathies goes out to my band brother for his horrible loss. I love you, man!
There is no need to rush, take the time to heal and get your head straight my friend. Your rockin' band will be here when it is time to kick ass Krosjoint style once again!
