Mother Nature is a b***h

Well, that sucks ass!! All the waiting. All the anticipation. All the planningand saving to attend. And now, LTL was canceled because of rain. Mother Nature is a bitch. As much as I hate to say it, I knew this was going to happen. The outlook was not good over a week before the event! Rain, rain and more rain. I'm sick of that shit. But the good people at Danny Wimmer did not want anyone to get hurt so they did the right thing and cancel. And yes, someone would have gotten hurt or even killed had the show went on! All that electricity and water was a total no-no! So don't be pissed at the LTL people. Shit happens. Nothing could have been done to fix that situation. In fact, I think they handled it very well! Notifying us early as to not lose hotel money, travel plans or whatnot. To be honest, drudging around in mud for three days probably would not have happened for me. In my youth yes, but not at my age.

I would have gotten sick for sure. There's always next year. At least no one will have gotten hurt. THAT is the important thing. A few promoters/venues did try their best to make things a little easier on the upset fans by having some pretty sweet shows I heard. And there was a festival that came into play at the last minute called Kyles-a-dick fest, that looked real cool. I love outdoor shows. I would have tried to play it but my drummer was out of town! Sucks. So I decided to go ahead and quit putting off painting my kitchen, and what a god-awful mess that is! A horrible decision/miscalculation if there ever was, for I am the worst painter ever! And on top of that, I hired Hellen Keller to assist me. God help me.

I've been super busy with band stuff, shows booked, and showscoming up soon to cover and play. My darn foot issue (plantar fasciitis) that I had three years ago hascome back with a vengeance and the last three months have been very painful for me. I, took a week off of work and it didn't help, so I'm getting ready to go back to the doctor and get another cortizone shot, that are painful and go halfway through your freaking heel. I'd endure any pain to fix this heel pain issue though. It went away last time, and I hope so this time, too.

My next door neighbor suddenly passed away a week ago and I'm pretty bummed out about it. This is the guy who I worked for a while, he was one helluva guy. He moved into the house that the thug heroin dealer lived in, and totally renovated and cleaned up this neighborhood big time! We rebuilt a few houses together. The homes looked 1000 times better when we were done. He helped people so much, whether giving you a job, fixing your home for much cheaper than anyone else, letting you borrow his truck, letting his poor tenants slide a few days on rent, and about 20 other reasons. On July 4^th this year, he even rented a $650 inflatable water slide for the poor kids on our street when it was very hot out. He was also very funny and could party like a rockstar. The guy had a heart of gold. This neighborhood lost a real good man, and I can only pray we get someone with even 15% of the goodness/kindness that my neighbor had. R.I.P Ken Grostic.

Be sure to check out the LRS piece I wrote regarding LRSfest 2018. I did an interview with Skinny J. Flaw is playing, so that should be pretty sweet! Flaw rocks. Me? I have a busy month ahead of me. Work will be picking up big time very soon (it's been slow), I have shows I want to cover, and I have a show opening for Great White/Bulletboys on October 16 at Mercury Ballroom, and another opening for The Alice Cooper Tribute at The Art Sanctuary on Saturday October 20 (a Halloween Bash), so I'm pretty stoked about those shows. Vocalist Jack Russell of Great White is a vocal hero of mine from way back when, so to open for him is a real honor for me. I love playing original music, and wouldn't change it for anything. We may not get paid good money, if any, but we get the satisfaction of doing things OUR way. And sometimes things go pretty good.

I plan on checking out a few worthy shows this month, so hopefully I will see you peeps out and about. It will be good to see some bands I haven't seen 10 times! I'll even let you buy me some beers!

Louder Than Life canceled, I vote it move to E. P Tom Sawyer Park next year:

Yes, it sucks bad. Many people I know were devastated when they heard. I have been plugging this thing for months and months, plugging away, so yeah, it sucks for me,, too. I look forward to LTL as much as you peeps do. But trust me, it was dangerous with all that water. It had to be canceled! I have an idea though. Move LTL to E. P Tom Sawyer State Park! It's away from the water and it's pretty freaking big, so it should easily accommodate LTL type events. I grew up near there and I tell you, that is a huge open field! We had to cross its vast wastelands as a kid going to the swimming pool. I think it would be perfect.

Interview with Kingdom Come drummer James Kottak:

Here he is. The drummer from Louisville who made it! He toured the world playing drums for the Scorpions for 21 years, and hit cult status with his original project Kingdom Come back in the day. I reached out to James to talk about the Kingdom Come 30 Year anniversary show at Bourbon Hall on October 14.

Eddy: What's up brother! Long time no talk. The last time I saw you was in Nashville when you showed the love to Louisville Music News and got us backstage VIP for The Scorpions. Thank you for that BTW. That was a super classy move, taking care of your hometown media as such. So, I'm totally blown away that Kingdom Come iscoming to Louisville! People are talking about it with great anticipation. Let's talk!

Eddy: Was getting Kingdom Come back together with a new singer your brainchild? How did all thatcome about?

James: It was a bit out of necessity, as our original for Kingdom Come vocalist announced his retirement back in January. Our new guy Keith St John, is someone I originally wanted for my Wild Horses band in 1991. I was out-voted so we hired someone else. I remained friends with Keith and jammed with him in LA many times over the years.. . so, here we are!

Eddy: I know it's a touchy subject, but inquiring minds want to know. What happened with Lenny and Kingdom Come?

James: It just imploded just like a marriage. However, he kept KC going with different line ups for quite a few years but it just wasn't the same as the OG.

Eddy: So how did you hook up with former Montrose/Lynch Mob/Nazareth/Quiet Riot singer Keith St John? And how have things been going so far? I saw some live footage of his singing, and he sounds killer! I can't wait to hear him with you guys! I bet it clicked instantly.

James: Keith came to dinner with the original four and we just clicked. Like I said before I've seen Keith perform many times over the years and was always blown away by his talent and positive attitude. The vocal parts on the first two KC albums are super demanding.. . KEITH is killing it!

Eddy: What are the plans/goals for the new Kingdom Come? Have you recorded any with Keith St John yet, or is it still, too early? How much new material have you written? And has the classic KC sound changed any?

James: We are all about the classic KC sound from the first two albums. We are reconnecting with journalists around the globe like yourself, radio, internet, TV, etc.. . we are focused on the upcoming 6 week 22 city tour to get feedback from our friends, family, and fans across the country, test the waters and get a vibe as to what our 2019 and beyond will look like. We have several shows booked for USA next year as well as offers from England, Europe, S America, Japan, and more!

Eddy: What are your fondest memories of living here in Louisville?

James: Living in Louisville meant 'playing in Louisville' to me. I played and promoted a Buster Brown show at Iroquois Amphitheater that sold out...awesomeness!

Toy Tiger days as well as countless gigs and hanging at City Lights, which our KC guitarist RICK Steier owned, is etched into my memory deep! I could go on and on...

Eddy: I'm excited to see all the original members together again. That promises to be a special night. You guys were always fantastic. Especially at Monsters Of Rock in Indy in 1988!

What would you like to say about your upcoming Anniversary show at The Bourbon Hall on October 14, to ALL your friends, fans and family here in Kentucky who haven't seen you play in years?

James: As you know or don't know, I was with The Scorpions for 21 years.. . we played in over 80 countries but we never played Louisville?! ? So, I am extremely excited to bring Kingdom Come home, but, I am even more excited to reconnect with all my family, musician friends, friend friends, dogs, catsand parakeets, etc.. .

Can't wait to see everyone in Luavul October 14 at Bourbon Hall...ROCK and ROLL FOREVER!

Shocker – LRSFEST 2018 on Saturdaym October 6 at Waterfront Park:

I have a special treat for you. There will be an LRSFEST 2018 happening on Saturday, October 6 at the Brown Foreman Amphitheater at Waterfront Park. I'll be honest, I didn't know much about any of this and was confused about things. So to clear all that up, I reckoned I should just get the heads up from one of the guys who is making it happen, to fill us Louisvillians in on whats new. So here is Skinny J from LRS to explain what the heck is going on.

Eddy: What's up, dude. Long time no see. So what's the deal with LRSFEST 2018? There is no longer an LRS radio station (not for years), or any other rock station that is relevant in this town, so why LRSFEST? It's kinda odd, but welcomed!

Skinny J: Good to talk to you again Eddie. As you know I work on air with WLRS for about 8 years, most of them as promotions director. My favorite event every year, hands down, was LRS Fest. The bands that we would bring in and the crowds that wouldcome party with us was epic. When WLRS went off the air in 2008, LRS Fest disappeared as well and there was a hole created in the Louisville rock music scene. I went to work for a few other radio station since LRS left the air but none of them were the same or gave me the same satisfaction on the job as LRS did. I finally decided I had to do something about it myself and bring back the Fest. Many times over the last ten years people have asked me, " Do you think LRS Fest will evercome back?" I can now proudly say YES, LRS Fest is back!

Eddy: Whose idea was it to put on another of these infamous events? And is there any chance of LRScoming back on the air anytime soon?

Skinny J: Well, It started a my idea. I did the research and decided to bring the Festival back for two main reasons; one to help promote local music that is basically ignored bycommercial radio in this town and two, to re-launch LRS102.comas a live local streaming rock station. Yup that's right, I got tired of not having a relevant rock station in Louisville, too and decided to do something about it. LRS and it's mascot the Walrus have been around Louisville since 1964 and are a part of Louisville music and it seems weird without LRS around. After I got the blueprint for LRS Fest laid out and the bands filled in, I started reaching out to other radio people and got a ton of help from people like Big Joe, Nubbins, Troy Roebuck, Emily Toll and The Derby City Diva. We all agree there is no station in Louisville has the guts to play music that has not been tested and focused-grouped into the ground. It's old, tired and boring. LRS102.comwill challenge that! We will have live local jocks playing a mix of local and national artists in whatever rotation they see fit. We will do contests and meet and greets, give away concert tickets and t-shirts and do all the things that made you love LRS in the firs place. I just moved into the LRS102.com studio on 816 East Broadway this week. It is a great location were I hope to be broadcasting LRS102.com out of for the next 20 years! The revenue from the festival will be reinvested into LRS102.com and we will be live streaming by November 1st! You heard it here first!

Eddy: I see that you have Flaw playing the show. Awesome. I've known Volz forever and we've never had a bad word. I look forward to seeing those guys again. Talk about some determined guys. Who else is on the bill? I don't recognize any names, of course, that could be because I'm old n' crusty. Tell us about about some of these bands you picked to play LRSFEST 2018. Who are they? And what kind of music do they play?

Skinny J: Well let me start by saying Volz has been awesome to work with on LRS Fest from the word go! Flaw was originally going to play a show in Detroit on October 6th but when Volz found out LRS Fest was back he wanted to bring the show home, and gave up the Motor City for the Derby City! Flaw also has a great history with the Festival, both Flaw and Volz's other side project Five Bolt Main played as support acts at LRS Fest in the past. With Flawcoming out of a long hiatus with a killer new album and LRS festcoming back after a 10 year break, it seemed like a perfect match to re-launch the Festival. As for the other bands I picked for this years Fest, I tried to get a wide range of rock sounds from acts all around Louisville and the surrounding area. Post Animal is out of Chicago and have a Pink Floyd-inspired sound with three guitars, bass, drums and keys. Daddy Issues! are one of my favorites on the bill. They are out of Nashville and are a post-grunge, three-piece female band with a bit of pop punk tossed in for good measure.

Anemic Royalty is one of the hottest original rock bands in Louisville at the moment. They were hand picked by Danny Wimmer to open Louder Then Life this year and have played every major festival around Louisville except Forecastle. They are anthemic rock with interesting lyrics, screaming guitar licks and a killer rhythm section.

GRLwood is another band taking Louisville by storm. Their unique style of scream pop surf guitar is a voice for thecommunity. They have a hard-hitting song about today's sexual revolution and society and an amazing vocal range that will blow you away.

King Kong is a Louisville band from the 1990's that continues to produce intriguing music. From the days of playing Tewligans and Butchertown Pub to today, King Kong has made a living out of playing and supporting! local music and seemed like a great band to include to represent the original LRS Days.

The Ego Trippers are a garage rock/ college rock band that puts out a very full sound for just three guys. Vale is a psychedelic rock band that sounds like Cream and the Beatles had a baby. Very cool stuff and nice to see modern bands not afraid to go back to some of those great late 60's sounds and revisit them with a new level of creativity.

A Rumor of War is for the LRS 105.1 crowd; a heavy metal band that will rock you out of your socks...literally! Miracle Drug has a heavy rock sound mixed with reggae and powerful vocals. They remind me a lot of (in the clear) if you remember them. And Wicked Garden is a band I was first turned on to last November at a White Reaper show at Headliners. These guys know how to rock and do so with authority! These bands were picked to play the first year of the new LRS Fest era because they all have music that is "on air ready" and should be played on radio in this market! and will be included in the new LRS102.commusical library.

Eddy: What are the show details? Time? Cost? Band order? I'm sure the bands fans would love to know when they play. I would like to thank you for your time and for making this happen. The best show I've ever played as a local musician was at LRSfest opening for Suicidal Tendencies. I played in front of 8000 people that day (the most packed time, too). I'll remember that till the day I die, so thank you! It's great that LRSfest got local bands to play/open these events. And you are still doing that! I'm a little bummed I'm not on the bill this year, but hopefully I'll get an invite next year (hint hint). On a final note, what would you like to say to the louisville peeps about LRSFEST 2018 leading up to the show?

Skinny J: Well Eddie, LRS Fest is scheduled for Saturday October 6th. The gates open at 11:00 am with music starting at 12:15 with Wicked Garden, then 1:00 Miracle Drug, 1:45 A Rumor of War, 2:30 Vale, 3:30 The Ego Trippers, 4:15 King Kong, 5:00 GRLwood,6:00 Anemic Royalty,7:00 Daddy Issues, 8:15 Post Animal and 9:45 FLAW. The show is on the Waterfront at the Brown Forman Amphitheater, just to the right of the walking bridge (Formerly known as the LRS Bridge!). Sorry we did not get you on the bill this year, Eddie, but LRS Fest will be back again next year and hopefully for many years after that, so I'll get you in there soon. You were always a good friend to the station in the past and I am sure you will be again going forward. I remember that year you played LRS Fest, good times for sure and a big part of what I want to continue. I want to help the next generation of Louisville musicians and music lovers make their own unforgettable memories at LRS Fest! Wow! This is a badass 80's lineup right here! I'm a serious fan of Jack Russell's voice, and of the Bulletboys, and I like songs by Enuff Znuff, too! So I'm very stoked that my band Year Of The Gun is opening. I wanna see all of you perople there early to support us local guys! In my opinion, Jack Russell's voice is one of the most underrated voices in rock! To prove so, check out this video of Jack performing some Led Zeppelin. I've heard live Robert Plant before, and he never sounded this good live.

Awesome. I have always admired Sebastian Bach's voice. I'm definitly going to try to cover this show. I had the pleasure of meeting and partying with him once when I was with 100.5 The Fox, and he is one cool guy. A very underrated vocalist as well, in my opinion. Check out this live footage. Dude can sing and is extremely hard to reproduce live.
