News From the Pit
Hi everyone. I hope you had a great Halloween and all! I've had a busy busy month. I've gotten back on track with getting out to see/review some awesome bands and also for playing my own shows again. This year has been kinda slow for me playing out-wise but it seems I'm making up for it now. I've had shows the last two weeks in a row and another one coming up in a week or so, and for me, that is rare! I just don't like playing out that much anymore with working so much and all. It's cool when you are a youngun', but when you are almost 50, it's not so easy on the ole' body anymore! Especially packing around tube amps with heavy-as-hell speaker cabs!
We just played a doozie of a show at Mercury Ballroom two weeks ago, and I got to open for national bands I've liked for decades. Tell me that isn't a cool thing to experience?! I was a major ham up there on stage, smiling ear from ear, but I was super focused and nailed that shit! I worked really hard to promote the show and it paid off, we had a fat crowd there early, despite having to go on at 7:20p.m. being the only local band on the bill, so that made me happy. I think playing national shows is the best thing for any local band. With that, I have been lucky. I recently got the chance to play a brand new cool venue you gotta check out! It's called The Art Sanctuary! And you won't believe this; right after we played, and I was unplugging my pedalboard cords, the crotch in my shorts completely ripped open, thus I had to exit the premises rather quickly, else it would have been "Jingle Balls," for real up in that mofo, for I had no undies on! Yes. It was awkward. Scooting around trying to load my guitar gear without exposing my nuggets. But now that I look back on it, it was kinda funny. I learned a valuable life lesson that day though. Never put your complete trust in a pair of drawers! Especially if you are a fat guy squeezed into some tight shit.
Ahhhh life. It's a trip.
There is a lot of stuff that has been going on! This month is chock full of local and national stuff. This is the busiest month all year perhaps, so I apologize about the delay getting this to you. I've been busy remodeling my house as well (it looks awesome!), so I've been swamped like a MF. I reviewed a bunch of national shows in the last few weeks: Ghost at Louisville Palace (which was a frightfully good time), Sebastian Bach (he still has it) at the all-new Trixie's Tiger Room, Kingdom Come's 30 year anniversary show (which was great!) at the Bourbon Hall, Jack Russell's Great White/ Bulletboys (my band opened the show) at Mercury Ballroom and a few local acts at The Paddock Pub. So yeah, it's safe to say I'm back after a little break in show attending. Sometimes you just get a little burnt out, and you need some old-school jams in your life to renew that musical spark.
Local local local! I haven't forgotten you bastages. In fact, I've been out n' about checking some of you out, bands like Cryptik Hymn, Wyld Ryde, Doppelganger, Pullpin Throw, Boombox Poets, Guerrilla Red and more! I can't remember all you people cuz I'm an old fart, but I do try!
I did get some videos of some of these bands! So be sure to check out my Local Live Video section below called LMN LIVE to see the local bands you love, in action!
Don't forget! Record some good videos of your band, and send it to me! If it's decent, I'll show it to everybody! Let them hear you live in action.

Ghost: "A Pale Tour Called Death," Review (Pics by Nathan Hutchinson of The Richmond Register):
Wow, what a great show! These Swede's are really on their game now, more than ever. The lightshow, stage theatrics, choreography, outfits, three huge gothic stained glass backdrops, massive keyboard setup, and highly proficient musicianship made this one fun memorable show. I saw them last year and had a blast then, too. I was by myself, and that kinda sucked, and getting decent pics was difficult with where photographers were assigned to shoot. Luckily, I ran into a cool dude who had a better camera than mine, so he got some pics for you guys n' gals. Thanks Nathan!
What can you say about Ghost? They have gotten better and better. And polished their whole show to a shining example of what good theatrical rock/metal show should be about. People love Ghost, there were tons of costumes, cool ones! And The Palace even had cool Ghoulie drink names, like The Zombie, a rum concoction of some sort. Ghost at the palace almost on Halloween? It was sweet.

The band was tight, the dueling lead guitars were humming with mystical, slightly evil melodies, the bass was sounding as thick as ever, the keyboards were up there in volume, and Papa? Papa is just Papa. He sounds the same every show I've noticed. He sings well. He is a very gracious host. He loves his peeps. He seems to really talk to the fans, and make them feel appreciated, and I like that. He doesn't seem like an a-hole, and I got word from someone in the know, that him and his crew were nothing but awesome to work with! They played two sets with a fifteen-minute intermission. There was no opening band, no appetizer, no bread before your musical meal. It was Ghost only this night!
They weaved their way through two sets of evil jams, including "Ashes," "Rats," "Ritual," "Devil Church," "Cirice" and an acoustic "Jiggolo Har Meggido," which was beautiful sounding. Act II featured "From The Pinnacle To The Pit," "Year Zero," and two heavier tunes "Mummy Dust," and a new heavy called "Faith," which is one of my fave new tunes by them. Ghost ended this fun night with "Square Hammer," and "Monstrance Clock." The band and the whole "Pale Tour," couldn’t have been any tighter, and the stage show was superb. I am liking the guitar work of Ghost more and more. Their tone is super sweet. Creamy and delicious to the ear, but nasty and vile when called upon! Solos just seemed to reach out and grab you. The lines to merch tables was to the street, almost! Insane. Ghost are geniuses when it comes to that as well. Smart. I was beyond pooped, and I would suffer at work the next day, but it was worth it going to this horror metal show. Thanks to Livenation for the unholy love. Killer show!
Kingdom Come 30 Year Anniversary Show Review (Pics by me):
I love me some Kingdom Come and was soooo looking forward to this Bourbon Hall show. I had a good time this night, seeing Louisville legends James Kottak and Rick Steier let loose one more time! Thirty freaking years! Wow. And I was there from the beginning! 1988 Monsters Of Rock in Indy. I saw Kingdom Come blow the Scorpions off the stage that day. Sure I was on acid, frying, but it still happened, I'm sure of it. It sucks Lenny couldn't be there to sing his classic vocal parts, but it is what it is, and new guy Keith St John kicked so much ass vocally, it wasn't even funny. He studied the parts and put his heart and soul into it 100%, and pulled it off. And ya know what? Singing those classic Lenny vocals is not easy at all. In fact, good freakin' luck trying to find someone who can recreate those melodies and notes! So to you Mr Keith St John, we here at Louisville Music News salute you. You are one badass singing mofo, who has aged well for a guy even older than me! Keith is 49. I thought maybe he was 35 or so. Crazy. Seeing lead guitarist Danny Stag rip those soul-searing solos was unholy. Man, can that guy smoke! It's like seeing Jimmy Page or Neal Schon up there ripping. EPIC! Rick Steier rocked the rhythms perfectly as always. Johnny B. Frank looked pretty stoked to be playing again, you could tell. Drummer James Kottak was home. Where he grew up. That guy toured the world many times over, and it was cool seeing him getting to let loose in his hometown. He said he tried to get The Scorpions to play here many times to no avail. He also made a gesture to The Scorpions that was pretty much "F**k You!," That breakup was bad, apparently.
Well, he was stoked this night. Maybe too stoked.
Kingdom Come pics by Eddy Burke
James may have ingested one too many beverages during the day, because he slurred a bit talking and was a wee bit wobbly a few times when he stood up. But he didn't fuck up on the drums, I might add! He was nailing it. They all were. It was great. I'm not too familiar with their song titles except my favorites "Living Out Of Touch," "Get It On," "Pushing Hard," and "What Love Can Be."
"Living Out Of Touch," was prob my favorite that night, because it was the tightest. Keith's vocals are top notch as you will see in my video below. Does he sound good or what?!
"Pushing Hard," is another I really like, and Keith nailed that one too, except the final super-hard note, which is my favorite part of the song, but it's ridiculously hard to do, so he played it safe on that one lone note purposely. There is no disgrace in that, he did great. Mere mortals cannot achieve the final word "Hard” in the song. It's truly a motherf**ker. Keith made all the songs his bitch, though, as he weaved and moved his way through the band’s catalog. Johnny B. Frank's bass solo could have been better, but with the band, he sounded super tight. Dude has got groove for days! And he still has the same haircut! James Kottak's drum solo was good, wholesome, clean family fun, he was having a ball, and loved jamming to family and friends. Maybe that's why he had perhaps a lil' too much fun! I heard some people making remarks about him being messed up. He was having fun, people, cut the guy some slack! He got to see family and friends after a long time probably. And he didn't mess up on drums, so STFU. James was super nice to me getting me VIP in Nashville for the Scorpions, and I will not forget that humble humble hometown gesture. EVER! He is one down-to-earth dude, and I loved seeing Kingdom Come once again. If they come anywhere near again, I will go see them. Even if I gotta lose sleep again because of work.
Keith St John is a perfect addition, and I can't wait to hear all-new KC. This is the beginning of the new KC, and I wish those guys the best. Those guys got the magic, and that magic will only get stronger and stronger the more they play together and create new music. Long Live Kingdom Come!
Here are a few videos I took. Listen to Keith's voice on "Living Out Of Touch." Beautiful.
Local acts Doppelganger and Wyld Ryde both opened the show with strong sets! Those young’uns in Doppelganger, tho, man what talent! I love both these bands. Not a jerk in the bunch! And that's a freakin' miracle in this town.
Sebastian Bach/Tiger Room Review (Pics by Monique Dempster):
I love this guy. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Sebastian way back in the late 90's, and he is quite a character. A good dude and one helluva singer. So I knew I would attend this show at Trixie's Tiger Room, a place that I had not seen since they totally remodeled the place. I ended up having a blast, and I was in awe at what Trixie's manager Trey Landrum did with the place. I was not expecting that! That place was always fun, but I have to admit, it wasn't that easy to get girls to come up to the Trixie's of old. My ex girlfriend didn't like the idea of going to a strip club to see a show (she was a stick in the mud, though, to be fair), and my new gf wasn't near as bad (maybe because she is an ex-stripper), but she was still a little leery of it. But now, the legendary Louisville strip bar has transformed into a full-fledged venue, girlfriend approved!
It's three times the size of the old showroom, complete with balcony a la Headliners/Mercury! The PA/sound system is on point. The band load-in setup is much better now, and well-thought out. Yes sir, it's on like Donkey Kong in that MF now. So congrats to Trey, Mike and the crew for the awesome job they did. I predict some pretty fucking EPIC shows happening there in the future. Count me in.
The old lady and I went to see Bas in action, and were not disappointed one bit. He can still belt out some serious highs, complete with range and power. All that experience summed up into a matured vocal talent that you simply cannot deny. The melody, and vibrato technique, and those sweet ass vocal effects that really bring out Sebastian's stuff, make for an energetic/explosive experience that one doesn't get very often anymore. A true rock n' roll show done by a guy who has been there, done that, twenty times over. I didn’t hear any sour note's or anything really off, but on a very few occasions during the set, he 'played it safe' on particularly difficult vocal lines. But in all fairness, I doubt anyone could have hit those super-hard notes, after such a demanding performance. But he came so damn close it wasn't funny. He nailed every part but the absolute most difficult! And ya know what? I'm cool with that. Everyone ages. I was seriously impressed regardless! Dawg was killin' it. And his band was freaking badass. Dude on guitar was nailing Scotti Hill solo's, which are not easy! Great musicians all.
The band roared through songs like "Slave To The Grind," Sweet Little Sister," "Here I Am," "18 And Life," "Piece Of Me," "Monkey Business," "Big Guns," and ended this great night with two of my faves "I Remember You," and "Youth Gone Wild." "I Remember You," was me and my ex Gf's song from 1988!
Yeah, Eighties cheese – but I love it all. The band also did Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Little Wing," which sounded amazing with Sebastian. And his tribute to recent fallen musicians who were his friends, like Pantera's Vinny Paul, was heartfelt and apparently a crushing blow to him.
So I finally got out and saw a show that I really wanted to see. At a great BRAND NEW venue! The Tiger Room at Trixie's is a must see now. So to those who didn't want to go to a strip club to see a show? Be smart, get past all that past nonsense and partake of something totally new and cool. Like I said … it's Girlfriend Approved! My GF told Trey it wasn't like the same club anymore, that it was like a mini-Mercury Ballroom, and that girls would be much more comfortable there now, and that made him all too happy. It was what he was hoping to hear, he said. Thanks for a great night Sebastian, Terry and Trey.
Here are a few video's I took for your enjoyment. I'm no Quentin Tarantino, and I had a few beverages in me, so don't expect much.
Jack Russell's Great White/Bulletboys Review (Pics by me):
As an opening band, I worked my butt off trying to get a crowd early. We succeeded. We had a ball, and had a great response for a local band. Thanks for coming out early and supporting Year Of The Gun. I hated missing Enuff Znuff because I had to take my gear home, but I'm way too paranoid leaving my expensive gear anywhere, so I take my stuff home and come back. I really wanted to see them play too, so that sucked.
The Bulletboys came on next, and boy, did they rip it up. I learned that you should never ever doubt Bulletboys singer/guitarist Marq Torien. Leading up to this show, some douche said online on my show post "What a joke! One original member." I thought "then don't go, d*ck," but I just let it go. There are always haters. Well, one original member or not, that original member managed to put together one hell of a band, that puts on one hell of a rock show. Original Bulletboys singer Marq Torien is a beast. A soulful beast. The voice of a Motown angel. An avalanche of musical ability. Not only does he sing difficult stuff, but he also rips ridiculous lead guitar solos like it's nothing. Here is another performer who has done wonderful things in his day. The set was super tight, energetic AF and groove-laden to tha max. The bassist Chad MacDonald had that classic Lenny smooth up in you bass tone going on. And the drummer, "Tiny" Bluso was a nut, tongue hanging out as he killed the drums with so much groove.
Together these guys had something special, despite one original member remaining! Yeah it's hard to believe, but it's true. Bulletboys are killin' it. I juss seent it with mine own three eyes. They rocked out "Hard As A Rock," "Hell On My Heels," "THC Groove," "For The Love Of Money," and of course, "Smooth Up In Ya." I can't help it, I've always liked that song. That bass line just grooves. There is no denying that. The Bulletboys sounded fantastic. One powerful energetic set. It's the best I've ever seen them possibly. I got to meet and get a pic with Marq, and he is a fantastic human being as well. A super nice guy. Marq's guitar prowess keeps increasing it seems as well. He did a decent amount of the lead work throughout the set. Impressive.
Next up was a personal favorite of mine, and another one original member joke band (shaking my head), Jack Russell's Great White. I've been a fan of Jack's since 1984 when I saw them open for Judas Priest at Freedom Hall. Instant fan! Well, I'd be lying if I said it was no big deal to me. He is a vocal hero of mine. Such singing talent and feeling. I've seen him play maybe five times throughout the years, but never with his own band. I have learned that Great White without Jack Russell is NOT Great White.
Jack Russell IS Great White! He is too hard to replace just like Sebastian Bach and Lenny Wolf. No difference there whatsoever. When Jack hit the stage, it was shocking how much Jack had aged since last I saw him. I did not like seeing my vocal hero looking like that. He did not look very healthy at all. But when he began to sing, there was the Jack of old. Still the voice that could soothe the rabid beast in creatures big and small. Tiny of stature, strong of spirit and determination. Now he really IS my hero.
It really pained me people. He sounded much much better than he looked. I may look all tough and mean looking with my tats and long hair and rock clothing, but I'm really an old softie. Seeing Jack up there made me feel bad. But he was still belting out some truly great vocals. They played "Lady Red Light," "All Over Now," "Save Your Love," "House Of Broken Love," "Call It Rock N' Roll," "Rock Me," and the song I hate the most "Once Bitten Twice Shy." I hate when most people think Great White, they think of that song. Yuck! Sooo many other much better songs by them. To me, my faves of the night were "Save Your Love," "Rock Me," and "House Of Broken Love." Those three are the masterpieces. Jack really shined on "Save Your Love." He did very, very well considering he didn't look so healthy. He tried very hard to put on the best show he could.
Not as youthful or able as 30 years ago, mind you, but he can still kick the shit outta most new generation singers easily. But if you know anything about Jack, the guy was a simply amazing singer in his day, and was definitely the most underrated singer of the Eighties hair metal scene. He did his best and it was good enough for me! We love you Jack! Never Give Up! Never Die!
His more than able band of seasoned musicians were on point, as if Jack would hire some chumps? Not likely. These dudes wailed. The guitarist is no Mark Kendall, of course, who I also love! I just wish those two guys would make up and play together again. That is the magic that you can't buy.
But I will support Jack Russell in any musical endeavor he chooses to do, just like any good loyal fan does.
I had such a good time this night. Seeing and opening for two bands that I liked very much growing up! I'm a lucky guy. Not many can say that as a musician who never took a music lesson in their life.
To the A-Hole who mouthed the "one original member, what a joke," post on my show post- you f**ked up dude. You missed a helluva show. And underestimated that one lone original member for those bands, THE SINGER.
Colossal mistake.
R.I.P Doc Electro:
I didn't know the man, but I heard he was a great guy, and highly skilled at fixing amps, making amps, and general repair. People are upset by this great loss. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. R.I.P., Doc.
Help Us Get The Church A New Guitar, because Some POS Stole their other one:
Yeah, it's sad but true. Some thieving scumbag stole the Open Door Community Church's – a church by my house – guitar. So a buddy and I are raising cash to try to buy them a new one. If there is one thing I hate it's a thief. But to steal from a church? OMG. So let's all do a good deed and do our best to get the Open Door Community Church another guitar. We have a gofundme account link below, so please go there and donate. Or you can look us up on gofundme under "Stolen Church Guitar Fund." We've only raised $156 so far, so please help us achieve our $1000 goal so we can get them a new BETTER guitar by mid-December. Or text me to give us a donation in person. 502-609-1696. New Venue Alert- The Art Sanctuary:
I got to play a cool new venue recently, the Art Sanctuary on Shelby Street. What a sweet new venue for us! This warehouse turned venue has all the makings of potentially great venue! The sound system is pretty rockin' and the stage is huge! I wasn't used to having that much room to run around in. They had all kinds of off the wall art on the walls, and cool stuff displayed here and there. The people there were really nice and my band is looking forward to playing there again real soon. The sheer size of this place is staggering. You could fit about 1200-1800 people in there I bet. It would be a great place to see some national shows at, so you promoters might wanna go check this place out! It's Eddy approved 100%. They just might need to slap some black paint on the walls. The white paint has got to go. Other than that, this place rules!
Verses CD Release:
I'm checking out the new CD release by Verses, and these guys are on to something good. I got an email the other day from Earshot Media about Verses. That's rare that I get anything from PR people about local bands, but that's just what I got! So they must be doing something right. "Landslide" sounds pretty epic from early on, it's melodic as all hell, and has very modern elements in there. The quality of the recording is badass. The drums sound killer. The guitars were a little lost in the mix at first, but now are a little more prominent. It's kind of a solemn, dark affair, with plenty of layered vocals over busy metalcore riffing. I'm digging the chuggy riff at the end most of all. It has a good familiar groove that I find alluring. Trey Landrum’s vocals are well thought out and lyrically intelligent. He's not the kind of guy who throws just anything out there. "Comatose," is much more my style right off, I can tell. Badass. Such a groovy, laidback, sexy beat. Beautiful guitars pave the way into this journey into Verses’ enchanted realm. This song is the shit. Much much better, and to me, much more creative. I love these guitar guitar tones. What a great recording. Great songwriting all around. This is some high quality local talent. It seems like Verses has grown quite a bit since I last saw them over a year ago I think. Mature. This song is Trey's best vocal work by far! I would be very proud of this effort. By all the guys. Great tones for the guitars. Great use of effects. Great engineer. A plus.
"Nerve," starts out pretty sick with some ultra low note heavy shit, that kicks into a nice energetic romp with some nice catchy chorus vocals with feeling. What on earth do they tune to for this song? A? Sheesh. I thought I tuned low! It sounds killer. I always thought low heavy tunings worked well with melodic vocal melodies, and this proves me right! I'm not sure if they are signed yet, but with this effort, it probably isn't far off. I see a tour in the future for these guys. Excellent job on the recording.
I'm gonna have to go see these guys again soon.
Bryan Fox "Eye Candy," Video Debut:
Here is Bryan's new video, and song co-written by Michael Starr of Steel Panther. Check it out! And just think, this cat had me in a headlock with a pair of pliers locked onto my rear tooth that he said was abnormally large and wouldn't come out. Dude didn't give up, he wrestled that tooth and yanked that MF out like a pro! Great musician, great dentist.
John 5 Coming To Manchester Music Hall on Thursday November 8!
It's the Hellzapoppin Circus Sideshow! I saw John 5 solo a few years back and it was awesome! He and his crazy guitars. Go see this! I wish I could get off work, but we will be super busy around then! SHIT! I would soooo be there, AND I've never been to the legendary haunted Manchester Music Hall! Next time!
Boombox Poets "After Dark," Video Debut:
Enjoy!
New Band Alert- Drag Them Down:
Steve Curtsinger rants"Drag Them Down is all about anger, violence and releasing that energy in a somewhat healthy way. Lets face it. There’s lots to be pissed off about."
Steve Curtsinger on guitar/vocals, Chris on guitar/vocals, Dave Wathen on drums. "Our style is pissed off. I have played with Old Vikings, Scully. Bearhammer, Cult Killer/Comess and lots more. Dave has played with Factor 9, Flaw, and A Forgotten Fury. Chris has been a guitar maniac since birth." Look for these guys in a month or two! It's gonna be brutal!
Greta Van Fleet – the new big thing?
Are they the new Led Zeppelin? I'll be honest, I thought the singer was a chick. But these guys do deliver something big and powerful in a four piece band. I kinda dig it. Especially this song.
Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening coming to Louisville Palace on Tuesday, December 4:
One night only! See the son of legendary drummer Jon Bonham perform all the classics with his band.
Jackyl coming to Mercury Ballroom:
Those southern rockers will be here on Saturday November 24. Get your tickets!
