News From the Pit
Wa sup, my peeps? It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally back to feeling like myself after one looong brutal winter, in more ways than one. Spring is here, a time of new beginnings. I just got back from vacationing in Gatlinburg, that's why my column is late. That and me getting caught in the cold rain without a jacket, and getting sick again This warm/cold/cold/warm stuff is killing me. Sorry about me being late, I really needed some rest/relaxation, so I booked a sweet little log cabin on a cliffside complete with hot tub, jaccuzi, gas woodstove, and king-size log bed. I really like Tennessee. And hot tubs. I'm freaking going back to that cabin. I did finally do the moonshine tasting thing. It was so much fun We were walking up to the distillery about to go in, and some guy shambled out of the distillery over to us like a zombie, and uttered some drunken, intelligible, slurred nonsense and then proceeded to breath on us. That breath. Dawg's breath was like pure petrol or souped up alcohol, mixed with rotten fruit, Aye aye ayeeeee. My nose hairs curled.
Despite this, we went in.
Then we went through a gauntlet of hillbilly hideousness as we consumed 13 mini-shots of different kinds of moonshine. The butterscotch and Apple Pie was good, but the bloody mary one made me wanna freaking spew. I held my own though, like a manly lumberjack, marching through the forest hacking down random trees with one swing. Unlike others, I didn't refuse one offering. And maybe that wasn't such a good idea, because I rarely drink. I'm a lightweight. So leaving the place, after all those shots, I could totally see why dude out front had become that way. I was now that exact same f**king petrol-breathing, slurring, drunken zombie.
Ok, I wasn't thaaaat hammered. I exaggerated a little bit, sue me. I did have a lovely little buzz going on. It made for a good story, though.
So yeah, I'm soooo done feeling blue over crap I cannot control. Fuck that shit. It's positive thinking time. I spent all winter bummed out over some bullshit I should not have given two shits about. It was stupid of me and I have finally moved on. An old friend just recently said something to me that really hit me hard, he said, "Dude, you always seem so unhappy You've always had plenty of girls, good bands, good things going on in the scene, attention, a home of your own, cars, hell, you have the world by the balls and don't even know it. I know guys that don't have anything near what you have. You should be grateful."
My friend is right. I should be happy and appreciate all that I have. And that is exactly what I am going to do. I just had to delete toxic people from my life. That's the key. I didn't like having to give up on those you care about, but sometimes in life, you have to. When there is no hope left, it's time to move on. And I suggest all of you take that same advice. I promise you will be much happier. Life is too short to deal with that negative bullshit.

I got approved to review and take pictures, and we had a freaking blast. The staff at the venue were courteous and treated me well. Thank you. Seeing Metallica play that close-up, to a hometown record crowd, was a major rush. They were killin' it too. (Read Review below.)
I also got out to see the Speed Of Sound Reunion at Diamond Pub Concert Hall. It's been a while since I've been there, and I had a good time seeing my former bandmember rocking out once again. I saw a shitload of old friends and it was all good. I got some decent pics of the show too. Enjoy.
There's a slew of shows I'll be attending soon, so I'm sure I'll see you all out and about. As always, be sure to keep me informed of showdates, news, new music you have, pictures, or live videos of your band that you would like people to see. Remember, I can't hook you up if I don't know what the freaking deal is. I'm no mind reader.
Derby is coming up and I'll be a busy bastard, for sure. One good thing is, work is kinda slow right now, so I'm hoping and praying I can get a few weeks, maybe even a month off (my work sometimes let's you off if its slow) to do some travelling. Hell, I'll take my goofy ass back to Colorado for another shot at the hot springs loop, or head to my spot in Orange Beach for some condo on the ocean action. I got the cash, and either one of those would totally work for me
Like my old friend said "I got the world by the balls and I plan on living life to the fullest and making all new memories in 2019 that will never die" Bring on summer 2019. I am ready
Peace out, my loyal readers.
The Metal Grapevine
Metallica Review w/ Pics by Me:
Wow. What a great show. EPIC It was a record crowd at the Yum Center, and the rockers were out in full force. The over a year-long wait was worth it. I have a long history with Metallica, ya know, I saw them with Ozzy in ‘86 at Cardinal Stadium with Cliff Burton (the last real metal show at Cardinal Stadium ever, due to fans going nuts at Ozzy's request) , and in ‘88 at Monsters of Rock, two epic shows. Those guys have come a long way since then and have done tremendously well. I also saw them about eight years ago here in town and I wasn't too impressed that time, but this time was different, they seemed recharged, rededicated, refreshed. And they slayed
The stage setup was very open, way cool, and allowed those lucky enough to be on the floor a close-up opportunity to see the band play. That's kinda neat. The stage was all open and there wasn't an amp in sight. You could walk all the way around the stage with no problems. Not your usual band setup, but this isn't just another band. These guys started an all-new era and new genre of music for the twisted and hardcore folk. I was a kid, and I was hooked instantly. The album Ride The Lightning fucked me up.
Metallica
I was surprised there was no opening band. They did have a comedian who I had no desire to see. So we just walked around and people watched. I didn't see all that many people I knew, surprisingly. That was odd. They also had a DJ before the comedian. I'm seeing more and more DJ's before concerts. Please god, let that come to an end. Get a decent opening band, and let them play. I'm sure it was Metallica's odd stage setup that was the key factor in no opening band. It would have been a major pain in the ass to have an opener with that setup.
How did James Hetfield sing? He did good. James is James. He was never the best vocalist, but he is also playing guitar at the same time, some pretty difficult riffage I might add, so cut the guy some slack. But yes, he can sing, and he tried very hard to do well. I admire that. Ole James had an arsenal of guitars that would put Guitar Center to shame. Custom-made axes that had to cost about $10k each, easily. I was in awe watching James from close up as he sang and speed-riffed his way through a long set of classics. James was on it. He looked enthused, and content as he pretty much hit the songs note for note, from what I could tell. And I was up pretty damn close to the stage. Dude was nailing it. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett was his same ole wah-loving self as he shredded his way through the set on his custom ESP horror guitars. Kirk also sounded great this night. No complaints here, and I'm a guitarist. I didn't hear Kirk mess up once. These guys had awesome wireless systems, so they were all over the place, and not just restricted to one spot on the stage. So you got to see each of the guys, one after the other, as they kinda rotated around the stage during songs. Bassist Robert Trujillo is a gorilla type, short, stocky, bass-playing beast who can also sing some decent backup vocals. He hunches over on that bass more than anyone I have ever seen. I don't see how he plays like that. Seems like his back would hurt like a MF after a show. Then there's Lars Ulrich, the hologram drummer. Just kidding. I don't see what all the hating is about, I thought Lars was rocking those drums, and he acted like a cool dude in my opinion, thanking the crowd over and over, and praising Louisville for the support. He seemed like a happy little fat kid with a bag full of candy. I did hear a few people bitching about him having a rough night, but honestly I didn't hear any major drum messups or off-timing spots that were that bad. I think I heard maybe one small messup all night. Who cares? No band is gonna be absolutely perfect in every way. Grow up. We all mess up. Even Metallica. We all miss a note here or there. The show must go on. Metallica launched into "Seek And Destroy," "Harvester Of Sorrow," (which I love) "Creeping Death," "For Who The Bells Toll" (which killed), the new cool song "Halo Of Fire" was actually really good, too, "Motorbreath," "Fuel," (I hate that song aye aye ayeee) another new tune called "Moth Into Flame," where the band unleashed lighted drones that danced and flew in unison over the stage. It was sooo cool. The technology to make those drones fly that choreographed is amazing: it looked like giant moths were flying over the stage for that whole song. They flew in such unison and exact formation that you coulda measured the space between each drone and it wouldn't have differed by more than a half-inch either way. A visual treat. Neat. "Sad But True" was badass, as well as "One." Watching the band slow it down for "One" is cool. Hearing the pretty clean guitars and James actually singing more was nice. They ended this excellent night with "Master Of Puppets," "Battery," "Nothing Else Matters," and the last song was "Enter Sandman." The band had over-hanging projection cubes probably 5X5 feet with TV screens on them, and the cubes moved around while showing images from the bands lengthy career, even showing pics of the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. The band also paid homage to Robin Trower's birthday for the massive and very receptive crowd. Seeing this many metalheads come together with no drama, no fighting, no drunken idiots, was heart-warming. We had a blast I think everyone had a blast, even Metallica. Sure they do this every other night, but you could tell they really love doing this even after so many long years. Music is something you do not give up on too lightly, apparently even when you have more money than god. The band was tight, the setlist was good, and they didn't play "Hero Of The Day" or that horrible "Whiskey in A Jar" crap, thank god. No, I'm an oldschool Metallica fan, of Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets. The newer stuff don't quite do it for me except for those two songs, but the band kept it real and kept their fans happy with a set made up of mostly older classics with a few new ones thrown in for a change. The band is smart. Gotta keep the fans happy.
Highlights for me were "Harvester Of Sorrow," "Creeping Death," and "For Whom The Bells Toll." But I have to admit, the new songs "Halo Of Fire" and "Moth Into Flame" were pretty damn good, too. It was a Metal Up Your Ass kinda night, and I'm glad I got to go. The fans were happy as hell walking out of that place, with smiles a mile wide. I had one, too. This was exactly what I needed after this shitty winter. I love my job. Here is a fan shot video of Metallica playing in Louisville. I hope you enjoy the pics I took.
Tool Coming to KFC Yum Center:
Wednesday, May 8 is the day many people in Louisville will be happy: Tool is finally gonna play here. People are excited bigtime and tickets are flying, and may even be sold out already. from what I hear. So if I were you, I wouldn't wait one second to try to procure tickets. You might be shit outta luck, but it doesn't hurt trying. I've never been a big Tool fan, but I may just try to cover this one anyway just to see what all the hubbub is regarding this band and their legion of diehard followers. I guess I better go ahead and send my media request ASAP. I wonder if Maynard will wear the purple sequined panties again? Like he did at Ozfest many years ago. That was the only time I ever saw them.
Rob Zombie at Louisville Palace on May 6:
I've seen Mr Zombie numerous times, even when he was with White Zombie, and he always puts on a decent show This one promises to be epic because of the sweet ass location My favorite place to see a show in Louisville. And you can't beat seeing guitarist John 5 tear shit up on his lighted custom guitars So yeah, this one is gonna be a must-see for sure So get those tickets because this will probably sell out. You know my concert-going ass will be there with camera in hand. Reviewing shows is a great love affair of mine and I'll stop when I'm dead.
In This Moment at Louisville Palace on May 7:
Awwww hell, you know I'll be going to this. I reviewed and photographed them the last time they were at The Palace and it was freaking awesome I got some amazing pictures of Maria Brink, and the band was badass. Do yourself a favor, and get these tickets asap. Do NOT miss this. They put on one great show complete with props, crazy outfits, and Maria belting out some tremendous vocals, and also looking sexy AF. That chick moves me from six to midnight in like second seconds. Get those tickets
Tora Tora - Bastards Of Beale Review:
Alright, I didn't have proper time to do a worthy review last month, so here it is. These ultra-talented musicians deserve a thorough review, so let's get down to it.
This album is badass. A very good follow-up to the band's first two major albums, released so many years ago. They still write some seriously catchy tunes that having you singing them almost after the first or second play. My favorites on the album are "The Sons Of Zebadee," "Everbright," "Son Of A Prodigal Son," "Let Us Be One," "Giants Fall," "Silence The Sirens" and the beautiful and ultra-catchy "Lights Up The River." I cannot stop listening to that last song. Great clean vocals, and killer work on the ole 12 string. Classic Tora Tora right there. I'll admit it fully, I am one disillusioned MF when it comes to music that is put out today. I rarely like anything new. But this? This is a trip back in time to when good music ruled the earth. When there wasn't any autotune, or vocal pitch cheats. Either you sang it right, or it sucked. Vocalist Anthony Corder has always had a place in my musical heart with his no-bullshit, Southern powerhouse soulful vocals. Dude was as different as Santa Claus when he went to Halloweenland in the Nightmare Before Xmas. He stood out, in a good way. And he still does to this day. The songwriting is excellent, and the riffs great. Very soulful all around.
"Everbright" is a heavy punchy endeavor with one smooth chorus that ends just perfectly. The lyrics of the chorus are sweet. "Son Of A Prodigal Son" sounds as Memphis as one can get. Very bluesy and down homey, but it does get down n' dirty at the end. The extreme blues riff in "Let Us Be One" reminds me of "Guilty" or "Hard Times," a little bit. I love "Guilty" It's so good to hear this new stuff words cannot explain. It's like seeing an old very dear friend after about 25 years or so.
Guitarist Keith Douglas is still killin' it on guitar. Who needs two axemen when you have a Keith Douglas around? Such soul, and talent at creating creative and beautiful guitar riffs from nothing. It doesn't get much better. Dude's solos always got to me, too. Some searing fucking leads. I was a Keith fan from the get-go. And what's funny is, I was never really a fan of bluesy rock before Tora Tora. Go figure. Bassist Pat Francis and drummer John Patterson kick ass just as much as Anthony and Keith. It's a supergroup for sure, despite the fact that they never made it big. With this kickass album, and its great reviews, good things are surging in for sure though. I just hope these Tennessee titans can catch that wave and ride it for all it's worth, because to me, I think these guys got the goods to make one helluva internationally touring, successful band. Trust me, I've been reviewing rock bands going on 19 years And I have seen horrible internationally touring acts that couldn't hold a candle to these humble Tennessee cats.
This album is one killer rock n' roll album, when the world desperately needs such an offering. Thank god, these dudes are back. Now I just gotta find some time to go see these guys, my blues rock heroes, in action live They have shows in Chicago and Memphis coming up. Hopefully I can attend Thanks for making this happen guys:

They kill This is a no-frills thrash event from hell, so if you like it brutal and uncompromising, this is your ticket Bobby Blitz and DD Verni are monsters
Motley Crue- "The Dirt" Movie Review:
I liked it. It was a fun sleazy good time, and it brought back many memories of another time, a time of serious fun, and lots o' sex. Rapper Machine Gun Kelly did a good job playing Tommy Lee, as well as all the actors did, playing such a raunchy role. The guy who played Vince Neil coulda looked a lil bit more like Vince maybe, but he was an okay actor. The actor who played the grumpy, all-too-honest Mick Mars did a great job. Even the version of 1984's short-haired Ozzy did okay. He sounded like Ozzy, even if he didn't look very much like him in that granny dress lapping up two puddles of human urine. The "gimmie a straw, I fancy a bump" scene was pretty comical. I thought the movie did well, making things look pretty real. You know when you see rock movies, the details are not covered so well, and it comes across kinda cheesy, like the movies Rockstar and The Rocker, where it don't even look like someone is playing the guitar notes that were hit. I hate that. This movie did pretty good on all that stuff, so that makes me a little happier. There are some pretty raw scenes in the movie, like the chick squirting, and the many fuck scenes throughout the flick. I got the book when it came out and I loved it. It's a classic. And this movie nails the book pretty darn closely. Of course, they had to leave out some pivitol things for time purposes, but all in all, I think they captured the gist of their story quite well. They left out Nikki's time with grandparents, the hooker Nikki lived with, Nikki stealing his first instrument from a music store, Vince's war of words with Axl Rose, and a few other tidbits that woulda been cool to have been included. But I'm happy with the result. And people seem to like it. Motley's album sales and merch sales have skyrocketed since the movie's release, so I guess it paid off for them pretty well. If you miss the good old days of LA hair metal, then check out this Netfix original movie. It rocks and doesn't hold back on telling the truth at all. So be prepared to be shocked. Out of 5 stars, I give it a 4.
Hatebreed coming to Bogart's on April 13:

Mastodon Coming To Iroquois Amphitheater Tuesday, May 28:
This promises to be a night to remember. A social gathering of the twisted. I wasn't ever really a fan of the band until I saw them live. Now I dig them. I'm looking forward to this one. I've always loved The Iroquois Amphitheater. This will be quite the event. Other bands on the bill are Coheed and Cambria and Every Time I Die.
Buckethead's Halloween in May Tour Coming to Louisville Palace on Monday, May 13:
Guitarist extraordinaire Buckethead will be having a Halloween concert that you might want to attend. I'm looking forward to this show, it should be a total freakfest My kinda show. I'm sure I'll be there, as I think buckethead is a guitarist not of this world. Super creative and original. I can't wait.
The Bad Humor Report- Vince Neil's Vocal Decline:
Yeah, Vince was never the greatest singer, but things have gotten pretty bad regarding his vocal prowess these days. This video has been circulating a lot and people seem to be getting a big kick out of the gassed, half-assing Neil laboring through the song. I'm a Crue fan, but this is pretty bad. The leaving out of whole words and the blatant mispronouncing of words has reached an all new level of BAD. If you can't sing the songs anymore, then it's time to hang it up for good Vince. And this is coming from a longtime MC fan.
Stryper Coming to The Merc on Saturday, May 25:
Christian metal legands Stryper are coming back to the Mercury Ballroom, and I highly recommend all of you metalheads to go see these guys. They kick so much ass live, and always have. I saw them when I was 15 or 16 and have been hooked ever since. Excellent musicians. Don't miss this.
