News From the Pit
Greetings! I hope everyone had a great summer. I'm not gonna lie. This year has sucked ass! There’s been some good stuff, too, though! I just got back from one long ass vacation that had me in Nashville, Florida and Gulf Shores. Boy, I needed that badly. Stress, work being horrible, it was a break that had to happen, no matter what. So I got away to get some rest, refuel, and gather my wits for another round of this thing we call LIFE. Life is one bad hit after another, but that is how you ultimately judge your mettle and integrity! Can you rise above, see and appreciate the important things in life, be a good person, help people, evolve into a better human being, and move on from people who aren't worthy of being in your life? Yes, you can! If my goofy ass can, then you should have no problem!
I have done it time after time, and I have always prevailed. I'm not one to quit at anything, unless there is no hope whatsoever.
My trip was kinda unusual this year, as I had no GF and took my first single vacation for the first time since 2003. I prefer being with someone special on these trips I take, but I wasn't going to let anyone/anything stop me from my plans, so I went to Nashville with a pretty girl I went out with a few times a few years back. It was a lot of fun! I freaking love Nashville. Broadway is some crazy shit! Bar after bar of some partying fools, and a huge number of very talented musicians. It was a country overload! It was actually kickin' on a Monday afternoon! What in the world!? We went to the Johnny Cash/Patsy Cline Museum's (soooo cool. I love Patsy Cline!), went to Kid Rock's new bar (that stage was freaking fifteen feet high), checked out the Parthenon and all it's historical info/museum, stayed in a sweet-ass hotel, and ate at the famous Morton’s steak house! That part of the trip was pretty freaking good, I gotta say. If you have not been to Nashville, you gotta go! Hit up Broadway! It's a party zone!
Then a childhood friend and I departed for Florida and Gulf Shores. We had some super sweet condos while we were there. Very expensive, but I don't care. I'll gladly pay for the good stuff! These places right on the beach were sweet beyond knowing! I just swam a lot, chilled on the balcony overlooking the ocean, and ate like a king! Sooo much seafood. Aye, aye, ayeee. My friend didn't feel like going out one night so I set out out on foot to some beach bars so I didn't have to drive. No sooner than I stepped out on the strip then I literally ran into these crazy rednecks from Missouri, who were riding around in a extra-long limo golf cart, while they were smoking weed like Cheech an Chong! Right out in public! These dudes were hammered drunk, and I was grateful they liked me and gave me a ride to the bar, because they were ready to fight everyone else on the strip! They were cool rednecks though, Jimmy Carter types! The huge barrel-chested patriarch of this wild clan was beyond drunk and yelling and boasting about his young son of maybe eleven or twelve years who was in the back of the Limo-cart. He would proclaim very loudly “my son is a badass, he will whoop a full-sized man with no problem!!” So I looked back at this young man who is apparently a beast of a youngster, and this kid looked just like a very young Harry Potter, skinny, glasses and all, with buck teeth! He couldn't have weighed no more than 90 pounds! I was thinking “is this the right kid I'm looking at? The fighter?” Turns out it was. I was not high, so I was like “. . . uuuum..ok dude, I believe you. Let me off at Pineapple Willie’s bar!” Those people were wild and extremely intoxicated. It's probably best I got off that cart when I did. Trouble was coming with those cats!
Then at Gulf shores, I had a pretty funny moment at the pool. We had just arrived at our condo, and we walked down to the pool for our first swim! There was a bunch of people there partying like a MF'er, young people, and cute girls who were half-naked. So here I was, the single, old, chubby, new guy at the condos, trying to fit in and look cool doing so. I had a bit of a buzz from fruity alcoholic drinks, so I was feeling rather good. So I set my towel, keys, shoes, down and ever so coolly, moseyed on over to the edge of the pool right close to where the cute chicks were. I was trying my damnest to look cool as can be for an old rocker. Well, about the time I reach the edge of the pool, my foot slips on the ultra slippery edge of the pool, and I go flying straight up, feet over my head! I was practically upside down like in the cartoons! Feet just flew out right from under me with no control! So the situation I was in, was this; I was upside down halfway over the pool, and halfway over the concrete edge of the pool! It was not going to be good when I hit that concrete edge! A hospital trip for sure, my mind was telling me in slow motion! So I pulled a Michael Phelps Olympic-style evasive diving move, twisted my body in mid air, and somehow I managed to slip completely into the pool without so much as even brushing the edge! I saved myself! So now I was underwater, thinking “how bad did that look? What will I hear when I surface?” Well I came up, and no one had seen my fall at all, except my friend! The young people were too busy partying! And my friend was like “Are you alright?! That was close!”
It was freaking funny! And my female childhood friend actually met one of the youngsters and got laid! I didn't get shit.
I never hooked up or got lucky on that whole Florida/Gulf Shores leg of my vacation, but that’s okay. I've hooked up enough in my life, enough to be content for any three average male lives! The peace and quiet was sufficient. And there was sooo much wildlife in the water this year, it was almost too much getting in the ocean, because something was always messing with you, huge schools of fish swimming by, annoying fish nibbling on you, large crabs walking around your feet, or jellyfish stinging the shit out of you! The purple “extreme wildlife” flag was out pretty much the whole trip so it was kinda crazy. People were scared to get in the water! It was a fun trip and I'm glad to get get away for a little bit. It rejuvenated me for this upcoming battle of mine.
Louder Than Life is drawing near people! Are you excited? I'm anxious to see the new location and setup that is much closer to my home now! I could almost walk there now and save on parking fees. We have quite a few badass shows coming up that I cannot wait to cover. Slayer at the Yum, and one of my all-time favorites, King Diamond, at Louisville Palace on November 16, and Skid Row is coming to the Iroquois Amphitheater on October 4, and The Iron Maidens are coming back this winter, so that should be fun!
I ended up missing the real Iron Maiden, but I was on the beach, so that was a fair trade! I am hoping to catch them next year, when they supposedly tour with Judas Priest.
I went to see some real good shows recently, I saw Def Leggend, the Def Leppard Tribute from Texas, and those guys were amazing (see review below)! One of the best tribute bands I've seen! I saw Corrosion Of Conformity (see review below) put on the best show I've seen by them ever, as well as seeing two of my cheating ex's there! Talk about awkward! Aye, aye, ayeee. And I went and saw Hairbangers Ball again. And wrapping up this month, I went and saw Vince Neil and Kix at the fair last week (see review below). It was actually a good show, and Vince kinda tried a bit more this time! I actually felt bad for slamming him in the paper a few times. His band was truly amazing, though! They were on fire for real! I saw a bunch of friends at this show, and had a ball. I also saw one of the chicks I dated and broke up with not too long ago, with her second option BF, who flipped me off. Oompa Loompa doopity doo – when you get angry, I giggle at you! I just laughed it off and continued having a blast. No one rains on MY parade! Why are people such haters. anymore? It's funny. Dawg shoulda been happy I paved the way for a reunion with his former sweetheart, instead of hating.
People! What are ya gonna do?
I am so glad that I have changed my ways years ago. I used to be such a horndog scoundrel. I was a cheating fool. I am kinda proud to say, that that was my only fault as a human being. Many people have serious faults (stealing, abusing, drinking, drugs, murder) that are pretty bad, but all in all, I think that one fault of mine was definitely not something that made me a blight on humanity. I was super horny! Sue me.
People live, people learn, and some people try hard to evolve into better human beings. That has been my goal the last two and half years, and I have achieved my goal 100%.
I am the best human being that I have ever been in my entire life, and I plan on keeping it that way.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all at LTL, King Diamond and Slayer! These shows I will be covering should be three barnburner of a shows! I'm looking forward to seeing you all. Be sure you say hello, or flip me off!

Anyways, let's show the Yum Center that us metalheads can behave and that we truly appreciate them having bands like this in our fair city. Props to the Yum Center for making this brutal show happen. You have made a bunch of people happy! I just wanted you to know that.
King Diamond coming to Louisville palace on November 16:
Omg! One of my favorite obscure bands is coming to Louisville Palace? How on earth did I get so lucky? I missed my chance to see them three years ago at Red Rocks in Colorado and I have kicked myself in the ass ever since. I met and interviewed King back in the late Nineties but that was ages ago, and I am looking forward to seeing him in action once again. At 62, his voice sounds freaking amazing! I will be there for sure! Do not miss this! Seeing this show at a gothic-looking place like the Palace will be even better!
Vince Neil/Kix Review:
My ex-friend cheesed out on me at the last minute, so I headed up alone. That kinda sucked, but I knew once I got to the concert, it would be on, for I know so many people, it’s not even funny. And I was right, it was great. So many friends, and cute females in attendance. I ended up having a blast. I saw my Year Of The Gun drummer Chuck Skibo there, and he is a huge Kix fan from waaay back! He was sooo stoked to see them, so we hung out a bit and watched them kick some ass! Kix hit the stage, and I was excited! I had never seen this Eighties band from Maryland before! And I like a few of their songs! They didn't disappoint as they ripped through a forty-minute set of classic Kix tunes. The tones of the guitars were very sweet, the vocals of Steve Whiteman were pretty darn good, and he still had his high notes intact as he sang his way through their set. Some of those high notes are not easy to hit by any means, but Steve pulled it off in pretty fine form I must say. I was wondering if he could hit those notes in “Don't close Your Eyes” but he did!
Guitarists Brian “Damage” Forsythe and Ronnie “10/10” Younkins were nailing it to the note from what I could tell, as they riffed and soloed their way to heart’s content. Those guys have a classic rock guitar style mixed into their Eighties sound, that is quite different, and I think it is a lovely mixture intended to capture any true rockers rhythm and soul. The drummer was on point, and the replacement bassist for Donnie Purnell were good. The band was very tight, and it made you wonder why these talented rockers didn't have the success that other Eighties bands did, without half the talent that these guys do? Life! They also know how to put on a great show, and entertain the fans. They have been doing it since 1980 so I guess practice make perfect. It was a good choice for the opening act, and I'm glad it wasn't Vixen or some other horrible crap. So thanks Kentuckyy State Fair for bringing us some cool rock to start out with! I enjoyed their set immensely even though I'm not the most knowledgeable fan of theirs! I did weasel a setlist, and the band played “Midnight Dynamite,” “No ring around Rosie,” “The Itch,” “Love Me With Your Top Down,” “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and ended the night with “Cold Blood” and “Blow My Fuse.” These guys may be older but they put on one rockin' energetic show (Fair or not!!), and tried very hard to entertain, and what more can any fan ask? I'd go see them again in a heartbeat!
Vince was next and I didn't know what to expect. More half-assing? Half-sung lyrics? Some clowns for his solo band? It was up in the air. But it all worked out in the end, because Vince's band was incredible. Yes, I said it. Awesome! The guitarist Jeff Blando was wicked as hell, riffing with a sound/tone that could plow through a 2 foot thick brick wall! Such a super sweet tone it was ridiculous! I loved it. And his skill at solo's was breathtaking. Vince couldn't have gotten a better guitarist. And he can sing, too, as proved when the band played Black Sabbath's Heaven And Hell” and Mr Blando nailed it to the tee! That song is not easy to sing either! Bassist Dana Strum is still a monster on bass as he walked through the set with ease like the true Eighties veteran he is. That guy is awesome on bass. Vince couldn't have gotten a better bassist. He still looks pretty young too! Weird! That guy has to be 60 years old! The drums of Zoltan Chaney were badass! No complaints there either! These guys were flat out killin' it!
Then there was Vince Neil. Ok, so I ripped Vince a few times in the past, but he deserved it when I did that. Not trying, having fans sing your parts, half-assing, it was not good! But his time things were a little bit different. Maybe all those videos on the internet, and jokes on him, pissed him off enough to put forth a real true effort in sounding like the good ole days! Vince Neil tried much harder then I have seen him do in YEARS! He actually put forth an effort to sound good and recreate the vocal notes for his music. Of course he wasn't in top form, but with due respect, singing Vince Neil lyrics properly is not that easy at all! Don't believe me? Ok, put on a Motley Crue record and try to sing “Shout At the Devil” or “Kickstart My Heart” absolutely dead-on in key with the music, and you will see what I mean! It's hard! You have to have one seriously high, squeaky, powerful voice to pull that shit off! So maybe I was a bit oo hard on Vince in the past. But this night, ole Vince did pretty well. Much much better! He sounded pretty darn good on some stuff! I heard he was a gentleman at the Meet and Greet and he made a lot of fans happy the way he acted! Way to go Vince, both performance-wise and being a good dude. The band played “Dr Feelgood,” “Shout at The Devil,” “Looks That Kill,” “”Home Sweet Home,” “Don't Go Away Mad,” “Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath cover),” Whole Lotta Love (Zeppelin cover), “Kickstart My Heart” and they ended the night with “Girls Girls Girls” and “Wild Side.” I gotta say, with that amped-up, steroid-induced monster guitar tone, a beast like Dana Strum on bass, and Vince doing much better, I can honestly say that I preferred hearing this band over Motley Crue. The fire just isn't there anymore with the Crue. Poor Mick can barely function anymore and should just retire and try to live a happy life, pain-free as possible. I will always be a Crue fan, but the time has come. What a fun show, and great night. I went there pissed off and kinda bummed, but went home happy as hell, with a bit of a buzz. Mission accomplished!
Corrosion Of Conformity Review:
What a great show! I almost didn't go to this, but I am sooo glad I did. It was an amazing time, and I got to see C. O. C play the best set I've ever seen them play! Crowbar was stomping ass, too! And even the opening band from Texas, Quaker City Night Hawks, were really good! It was an awkward night for me, as two of my cheating ex GF's were there with new hubbys. I didn't give a shit though, I thought it amusing. Good riddance to cigarette-smelling foulness. I was ready to f**king rock out and rock out I did! The Quaker City Night Hawks came on and put on a great set of bluesy, tex rock, classic rock-feeling music that set the soul alight. Great vocals and great guitar riffs set the mood for the night. awesome band. Check them out! Crowbar came out and destroyed, putting on a doomy, sludge, swampy, metal show that only Crowbar and Kirk Weinstein can produce. Dude may not be a superstar, but he is a legend in his own right. The riffs were hot n' dirty and the crowd was appreciative as Kirk and company laid down the Nola law in Louisville. They played “All I Had (I Gave),” “To build A Mountain,” “To Carry The Load,” “Planets Collide” and “Like Broken Glass.” Great set guys, It got my blood pumping like a MF'er! The band was tight, and they were in excellent form.
Corrosion of Conformity and Def Leggend
Corrosion Of Conformity played an absolutely awesome set that night, the best I had ever seen them, hands down! Pepper was in fine form as he riffed, soloed, and sang his heart out to the adoring fans in attendance. Bluesy, swamp metal at its finest was the entree of this metal smorgasbord of an evening. The feeling, the soul, the tortured emotions of such a bluesy guitarist gone metal was a sight to behold. I was never much of a COC fan honestly, but there was no denying this performance. I always give credit where it is due, and in this case, it was way overdue! Pepper and the boys put on one helluva show, super tight, and the crowd went nuts. There was a certain feeling to it that I cannot put my finger on. Like you were seeing something special, like a pig going down on a hyena, or a blue whale humping an elephant. It was special. And Pepper was in a zone this night as he ripped some truly awesome lead guitar solo's, especially at the end of the night on the last song! Wow! The band played “Seven Days,” “King Of The Rotten,” “Stonebreaker,” “Albatross,” “My Grain,” “Diablo Blvd,” “Vote with A Bullet,” “Born again For The Last time,” “Who's Got the Fire” and the last song, a barnburner with extended trippy solo, “Clean My Wounds.” That extended solo at the end was truly inspirational, and impressive. I can see why Pepper is so widely loved by metal fans the world over. He has that bluesy, trippy, Southern, metal feel down pat, like no one else does. He definitely made me much more of a fan that night with that performance. Guitarist Woody Weatherman is one helluva guitarist, too, and works so well with Pepper. He has been with Pepper since 1982 and you can tell. A hell of a combo these two guys are! And for Pepper to sing and play at the same time? Mucho respect! That shit is not easy. I saw a lot of friends and met a cute girl there that night, so I had a great time. Sorry I wasn't able to get you pics but I had so much going on I didn't think I would be able to even attend this show till the last minute! Thanks to Mercury Ballroom for always taking care of me. I love you guys n' gals! Here is a sweet video by Jason Schwartz.
Def Leggend at Mercury Ballroom Review (pics by me):
Wow! This Texas-based Def Leppard Tribute band is one of the best tribute bands I've ever seen. After that Motley Poo fiasco, I was hesitant to venture forth to see another tribute band, but I am glad I did! OMG. These guys are golden! Not only were they on point to the max, but they seemed like real good dudes, too. So cool in fact, I friended them on FB. And I never do that! Vocalist Wes Willenberg is a beast on vocals. Dude was nailing it! Almost every high note was reproduced perfectly. Outstanding! Wes tries very hard and does not hold back like a lot of singers do. And the backing vocals of the band were great as well. Together they rounded out the signature Lep vocal sound to the tee! Guitarists Mike Hamil and John Inman were incredible. The tones/sound/professionalism here used to recreate national rock superstars was dead on excellent. It couldn't have been better for real. These cats do such a good job at dialing in the tones needed, that its not even funny. They are guitar experts, no doubt. I am a decent guitarist who has opened for many nationals, but these guys are on another level entirely. The bassist Taylor Dennis is a charismatic whirlwind of a player and puts on a good entertaining show to the fans. Great backup vocals as well. Dude was very proficient on the bass. Drummer Ken Koudelka was kicking ass as well and didn't miss a beat, but he had two arms! Sorry Rick! Together these guys are a force to be reckoned with, and I thank Mercury Ballroom for bringing these guys here to show us what a real Tribute band is all about! Everyone was amazed at these guys. Yes, people were talking! They played pretty much all the hits including “Rocket,” “Foolin,” “Bringin On The Heartbreak,” “Love Bites,” “Rock Of Ages,” and “Photograph.” I would go see these guys again in a heartbeat. Thanks for bring us the goods from Texas guys!

Skid Row Coming to Iroquois Amphitheater w/ Fire Dept:
On Friday, October 4, Skid Row will be at the Iroquois Amphitheater with local legends Fire Department. This should be one cool show, and I plan on attending. I'm not even sure who is on vocals for Skid Row these days, as they have had a rough time keeping anyone for a period of time. I just wish they would make up with Sebastian Bach and reunite. That would have been great! But it is what it is, and I'll be there to support no matter what! See you Eighties cheeseballs there!
