News From the Pit
Hello all. I'm back from my vacation out west and it was something else, lemmie tell you.The fall colors out West were unreal, with all the yellow's, golds and reds everywhere. It was the best time to go. It's been a pretty shitty year so far, and I really needed to get away something fierce and this was just what the doctor ordered. The sights I saw, the pleasures I indulged, the scenery I gazed upon, was super sweet. Huge mountains, beautiful and warm hot springs, good Southwestern food, and good company. It don't get much better. I finally achieved one of my bucket list items by climbing/hiking Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, after I missed my chance the last time I was there, roughly twenty years ago. One thing about this climb was, it was waaaay worse/scarier the videos on Youtube let on to! Aye aye ayeee! Because at the hard part you cannot film and climb at the same time! You have to use both hands to climb up, practically repelling. OMG it was terrifying, hanging from a 1400 foot tall precipice, but we didn't drive all that way (only 3 hrs from Vegas) to chicken out like three-fourths of people do when they finally get to the dangerous part, so we sucked it up and climbed that M-fer to the very top! Nine people have died climbing this very same trail. It is the most dangerous hike in the United States. Even my GF made it up the whole way. She is an amazing woman, and the bravest, most fearless woman I have ever dated. What a trooper.
With me being gone so long this month, my column won't be very long, but I did get to see Skid Row play at the Iroquois Amphitheater back in early October before we left, and it was awesome (see review below)!
And we have some badass shows coming up that I'm sure you will see me at. Slayer at the Yum on November 11, King Diamond at Louisville Palace on November 16, and Alice Cooper at Louisville Palace on November 19. I love seeing all of you a-holes out at these shows. You make an old man feel young, if even for a minute. I am glad I was able to get you folks some FREE tickets to win! I would like to thank Live Nation and the good folks at the Yum Center for doing these ticket giveaways through my column! They were definitely a hit! I've hundreds of submissions. Ticket Winners will be announced in a few days and I will be sure to list the Winners names next month.
ALSO, I would love for you people to come out and check out an old-school metal show just like the good ole days in the ‘Ville. Saturday, November 30 at Louisville Billiards! Crazy Train, Luther, Krosjoint and Sick Little Things (The Alice Cooper Tribute). These bands have a long long history in this city and state, and it would be respectful and very nice if you all came out and showed your respect for musicians who have rocked this city for decades! Pat Bareis, the singer for Crazy Train (the Ozzy Tribute) dubbed this the ";We Won't Go Away Tour!"
We may be older, but we still definitely got the goods to put on one helluva show! So c'mon up and see wwsome old guys can do.
I myself can't wait to rock! I'm all gassed up and charged up ready to go!

Skid Row/Fire Dept Review w/ Pics by Eric Goodin:
I to go through so much BS to get these tickets it was ridiculous, but it finally went through and I got them. Thankfully, the show was worth it. And whata show it was! Wow. This was a special affair indeed. For one, I love Iroquois Amphitheater, for two, I love Skid Row (and have even opened for them before), for three, local Toy Tiger legends Fire Dept were opening, for four, all this was for a really great cause!
I wasn't expecting much of Skid Row vocally, and to be honest, I didn't even know who was the current vocalist since they gone through so many singers in recent years. The singer they when I opened for them wasn't very good, and the last guy didn't have the spirit or heart for such tunes, so I wasn't expecting much. Boy, was I wrong.
I may be an a-hole a lot of the times, but at least I'm an honest a-hole!
The new singer of Skid Row is ZP Theart, a south African cat with some major pipes. Dawg was killin' it. When we heard him sing that first high note, my GF and I looked at each other and was like, Daaaaaamn. I'm not gonna lie, I am a major Sebastian Bach fan, and it hasn't been easy for me to like any replacement, but this new cat ZP is as good as it's ever going to get. Such power, such soul, such surprising ability to recreate vocal classics. And let's not bullshit around, Sebastian's vocals are hard AF to sing! Everyone knows that. Hellen Keller knows that! I'd say that ZP hit about 95% of every recorded note in the Skid Row repertoire. Recorded notes! Let that sink in. Not the shit that passes for a live performance, but the actual notes on the CD.
Yeah, I was shocked, but happy. Happy for Skid Row. They have been through a lot and it to have been stressful AF. They need to treat this guy right, because he is the missing key that finally has returned! Show him some love.
Skid Row was their usual selves, but a bit happier I'm guessing, as they waded through the years of originals they amassed. I love these guys! The catchy rhythms of Dave ";Snake" Sabo, the punky funky basslines and backup vocals of Mr Bolan (still with nose-ring!), and the highly creative and underrated skills of lead guitarist Scotti Hill. These guys jam! And drummer Rob Hammersmith was on point as well. Kickass all around. They opened with the barnburner of a tune ";Slave To The Grind" and then lit into ";Suite Little Sister," ";Big Guns," ";18 and Life," ";Piece Of Me" and then Rachel Bolan gave ZP a vocal break while he sang his punk tune ";Psychotherapy" which I hate. Beer time! Bolan's a beast on bass, but his punk vocals suck. Next up was ";I Remember You," which was good, and another fave of mine, ";Monkey Business" ";Makin' A Mess," then they played a new song, thatI could not make out the title of, thatwas great! And heavy! A worthy addition to their classic setlist. They finished up the excellent set with ";In A Darkened Room" and finally ";Youth Gone Wild." Scotti hit a wrong note at the beginning but who cares, he's the cat thatusually never messes up. I a blast, and my Gf loved it, too. With all the madness, chaos and stress in the world in our daily lives, it's great to get out to see good music at a good venues with a bunch of friends. And that's wit was this night. No drama. No fighting. No idiots. It was good music and good people.
Speaking of good people — Fire Dept.
Omg.Time travel time!
Imagine a 16-year-old horny AF Eddy Metal, lurking about outside the Toy Tiger, determined AF to get in that Mfer, where all the hot slutty girls were! My awesome older sister told me a way that might work to get me in. I finally just got bold/desperate and rubbed/smudged some black ink on my wrist, and bullied right in like I owned the place, shoving my black smudge into the door-person face as if I paid and was coming back. It worked! Dumbasses! Never before have I revealed how such a young man such as myself was able to party with the bigboys at such a young age, on a regular basis. My little friends in my neighborhood my age were awestruck that I partied at the Toy Tiger, with Louisville's top rockers, and mucho hoes, on a regular basis.
I pulled off a colossal scam to get in that place, and was a legend in my neighborhood for it. My reward? I got to hang out in Louisville's most legendary bar with Louisville music scene folk much older than me, with some truly great people. And the bands I saw, Fire Dept, The Mighty Water Kings, Mannekin, were as legends to a little M-fer like me. I told myself: I have to play here!
I got my wish. Plenty of times. And I made friends with the people in charge up there, like Perry, Jeff, Dennis and Steve. Steve was bartender, so I saw him a lot, and Perry booked my bands. Of course, you know Steve and Perry were in Fire Dept, so it was all like one big dysfunctional family up in there. Back to the gig.
Seeing these guys up onstage again opening for Skid Row, kinda got to me a little, because I sooo much fun back then. Vocalist Steve Johnson was saying he couldn't believe he was still onstage jamming with Fire Department at age 68 (if I heard correctly). He the grey going on, but he looked and sounded pretty damn good as he strutted around doing the Steve Johnson thing, minus the dildo's. Jon Huffman was looking pretty happy as he ripped ridiculous solo's and showed off tepic stage charisma of his. Allen Needis also a beast, and looked equally at home. I love Allen's U2 Tribute Joshua Sky! Great band! Go See them! They nail tshit! Nailing The edge? He does. Tony Z was super solid on bass as always. Tguy is the smilingest mofo I know. A good positive attitude is wonderful. I'm used to grumpy bastages. Ole Perry was on fire on his Tama drums. Together these guys are special. And I hope they stick around for many more years.
Fire Dept ripped through tunes like AC/DC's ";Sink The Pink," ";Eat The Rich" and ";Problem Child", and Accept's ";Balls To The Wall," (I love this tune) Nazareths ";Hair Of The Dog" and a slew of rockin' originals from back in the day. These guys are tighter than ever, and haven't lost a thing. Admittedly, there was more than a few sentimental moments for me as I sat there watching the dudes that got me all gassed up when I was a young whippersnapper. Visions of debauchery from yesteryear, hazy clouded memories of drunken revelry at their shows, and always knowing when you went to a Fire Dept gig, you just knew you were in for some fun, no matter what! What a time to grow up in! I see these young cats now and I feel sorry for them. They missed it.
I wasn't very happy with the turnout, and neither were the Shirley's Way people. It was a lovely night and perfect for a rock n' roll concert.
Maybe Skid Row's lack of proper vocal replacement throughout the years kept people away for this, but those of you who thought this way missed out on one great rock show, because the new singer for Skid Row can deliver!
Shirley's Way, the promoter of this awesome event, is a non-profit organization that helps people with cancer. The guy in charge up there, Mike Mulrooney, is a hell of a dude, and does not mess around! He is all about doing some good in the community and set up a non-profit gaming system at 10966 Dixie Highway, and it's awesome! They have all these cool games you can play (I could play those things for hours!), and every time you play, you are helping people who really truly need it. So drop in, and check out wthis organization is up to, because we need more human beings like this in the world! The games are pretty badass, too!

Yup, it's true! Slayer, Primus, Ministry and Phil Anselmo and The Illegals. You have made a bunch of people happy! I just wanted you to know that.
Here is some recent footage of Slayer in Greece! Dig it!
King Diamond coming to Louisville Palace on November 16:
Omg! One of my favorite obscure bands is coming to Louisville Palace? How on earth did I get so lucky? I missed my chance to see them three years ago at Red Rocks in Colorado and I have kicked myself in the ass ever since. I met and interviewed King back in the late 90's but twas ages ago, and I am looking forward to seeing him in action once again. At 62, his voice sounds freaking amazing! I will be there for sure! Do not miss this! Seeing this show at a gothic looking place like the Palace will be even better! Here is some live "1777" for ya!

You just know there will be smoking, no matter the rules up in thatmofo. You think he'll bring the guy with the green hat?
Incubus coming to Louisville Palace on November 15:
I've never been a fan, but peeps seem to love these mofos, so I'm guessing this may sell out! So you might want to get your tickets ASAP, or suffer the consequences. Act! Here is footage of Incubus on the late show a few months back. Enjoy!
Jackyl Returns to The Merc on November 30:
Jesse and the boys return! This is another band I've never been really awfully fond of, even though I like a few songs, but I gotta give these redneck rockers credit, the last time they were here at The Merc I went and took my new young guns guitarist, and it was a great show! Jackyl impressed this time! We a blast! Being a much younger cat, Phil didn't know about Jackyl at all, but he learned pretty fast and liked whathe saw/heard. TheSouthern rockers return in late November and opening will beLouisville rockers Edgar Red, so be early! We gotta show our hometown guys some love after all! Here is my fave Jackyl song ";When Will It Rain" performed live at Sturgis.
The Iron Maidens Return:
Those badass Maiden chicks are coming back, so don't miss their return performance. They ripped it up last time. Here they are ripping it up at Bogart's several months back.
Dweezil Zappa is Coming in March:
On March 5 at The Kentucky Center For The Performing Arts, guitarist Dweezil Zappa will be appearing! Dude is a monster guitarist so you might not want to miss this. Dude is sooo weird, you don't know whe will have up his sleeve.
Wicked Sinsations new singer is:
Eighties hardrock cover band Wicked Sinsationhavea brand new singer, Michael Duncan, from Lexington! Wa choice! Perfect. I've known Mike for going on 25 years and he is one helluva singer. Congrats to these dudes finding each other, and may you have a grand union! It's really a great match. Frank is also a beast on guitar!
