News From the Pit
What up slugs! I just got back from Chicago and it was quite an adventure. We got to see two wicked museums with huge dinosaurs and a captured Nazi Submarine, eat true Chicago style pizza that was damn near four inches thick, chilled in a huge badass hot tub for a long time, swam in a nice heated pool, looked at the beautiful Chicago skyline, visited the newly opened dispensaries (which was the only disappointment), and got to see some very pretty snow accumulation of about 4 inches or so. We got stuck in the parking lot of the hotel and when my GF tried to push us out, she slipped and fell into the snow and slid underneath the car spread-eagled! She was perfectly ok, but it was kinda funny. Thankfully, those northern peeps up there expect the snow, so road-wise it didn't affect them at all. I had been wanting to head back up to Chitown for a while now and I finally got my chance! Now that I'm home, it's back to business.
I've had a decent break these last five months, and now that spring is almost here, it's time to kick some ass and take some names! As I said before, I was going to try to find a decent venue to put on some shows at, but I havent found anything worthy. One place wanted me to supply door person, mics, cords, sound-guy, it was dumb! Who has time for all that jazz? Hell, it's hard enough just keeping a band with five problem-laden individuals like me going, period, let alone having to do all that extra stressful crap. It kinda reminds me of like the music scene in 1994 when I was just getting started.
As a scene, I had hoped we would have overcome such nonsense like that but I guess not. I just don't like messing with PA Systems or any of the sound aspect of the shows. I don't have time for that horseshit! I got other shit to do! Like playing the fucking music! Tuning guitars, setting up, and yelling at my singers for showing up five minutes before we are to play! Aye aye ayeeee. I admit I have been slacking bigtime on trying to get shows for my bands for a good little while, but sometimes you just need a break and time to chill out and do your own thing. That time has passed and I'm ready to take a more active role in getting shows and playing out again more frequently. I did just get a spot opening up for the hard rock band Hinder in a few months, so that should be fun. It's my first national show in a little over a year! And I may be playing Indianapolis here coming up soon, too, so I'm excited to get back to playing my music regularly. Original music. The truth is that it's not very popular these days, and not very rewarding, but ya know what, I would not have it any other way! There is nothing like playing music that you made up and created from nothing!
I was just recently asked if I wanted to possibly join a metal legends tribute cover band by a respected musician in the scene, and I gotta tell you, it made me feel pretty darn good to be thought of in such a respectful manner. I explained that I had never been in a cover band, and it would be a lot of hard work, but it is something that I may be interested in, possibly. I could see me playing some Dio, Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Crue, Ozzy, etc etc. But the facts are, it would be a huge challenge for me! I never cared about learning cover songs, because I was always busy trying to write my own ideas. They are talking about touring and stuff, so I dunno if I'm built for all that or not. I like being home, in my comfortable bed, with my dog. Ha. You never know though, the guy who asked me is a super cool dude and if I was ever gonna jam in a cover band it would be with a cat like that!
We will just see how the cookie crumbles I guess.
I am 50 years old now, and not ready to hang up my hat just, not by a long shot. I still have some gas in the tank and I can still help out our music scene as well.
I would like to take a minute to talk about my boss and newspaper owner Paul Moffett. Without him, I would not have been able to help out you bands the way I have over the years. Without the chance he gave me, I wouldn't have been able to do any of the cool stuff I've done in Louisville Music News. I've seen first-hand, so many times it's uncountable, the happiness in peoples eyes as they got to see their music on display for the world to see/hear. I would just like to say that without this hard working, humble, dedicated man, who gave a poor uneducated schlum like me a chance, that that happiness would never have happened, and that I am grateful for the opportunity the gave me. And you should be too. He has run LMN and helped regional talent since the Eighties and should be recognized for his tireless efforts.
So props to you Mr Moffett. You have made a difference.
[Youre welcome, Eddy]
Me? Hell, I'm just grateful for being alive, and having the opportunity to make people happy and do positive things for folks. Unfortunately, my GF and I just broke up, so that has had me upset and stressed beyond knowing. But spring is close, and I plan on putting much more time/effort into my music and column, so hopefully time heals those wounds. I will say that I wish my ex the best always and there are no hard feelings from my end whatsoever. She is a beautiful woman with a huge heart deep down, who has been through many bad things, and I hope she finds true happiness soon. Sometimes people just don't mix well, no matter how much they care for each other.
I had to get out the other night after our breakup, so I went to see The Last Sabbath at Louisville Billiards, and it was so nice seeing all my friends again, and feeling the love and respect from you great people. You peeps are what keep me going. You make me! I appreciate the support and that you know deep down inside what kind of human being I am, even though I am sometimes closed off and distant. The world is a cruel place, so I mostly keep my distance from folks, and keep my inner circle even smaller. You people cheered me up quite a bit.
If you wanna cheer me up even more, you can come see me play this summer in both my bands! I'll be opening for Hinder on June 3 at Diamond Concert Hall, and I'll be playing Metalfest, and hopefully Indy, and some other venues! Never give up! Never say you are too old.
And just know that until the sky falls upon our heads, LMN's Paul Moffett and I will always have your back!
Peace.
The Metal Grapevine
Black Label Society and Obituary Coming to new venue on Monday, March 16
:Live at the Old Foresters Paristown Hall. This should be a good one at a sweet new venue!
Megadeth, Lamb Of God, In Flames and Trivium coming to Riverbend!
Tuesday, July 7! This should be good. It's been awhile since I've journeyed to Riverbend, so maybe I'll head back up that way. Those folks up there always treated me great. Thank you, Riverbend! A truly great venue!
Primus, The Sword and Wolfmother coming to Riverbend:
Tuesday, June 9, Primus will be creating a wormhole from which to deliver their weird, talented music from. Be there or Les Claypool will kill you! I saw those guys last fall and it was awesome! And I'm not even a fan of Primus. But there is no denying Les Claypool is one of the finest bassists in the world today. Fact!
Ozzy's music days may be over, 2020 Tour Just Cancelled:
I was right! Damn, I'm good! I predicted when tickets were rescheduled for 2020 because of the cancelled 2019 tour, that the show would not happen because of Ozzy's health, and lo and behold, no 2020 tour either. Ozzy will be getting medical treatment in Europe. He has had one bad year and he needs to recover. In the meantime, check out his new album that just came out. I havent heard it yet, but I have heard good things! Here is a sample of it.
New Band Review - The Last Sabbath (A Black Sabbath Tribute): Pics by Ashley Murphy!
I needed a night out with friends and I had a real good time. This was this Black Sabbath Tributes first show, but these cats were as far from beginners as one could get. Each member of Last Sabbath is rooted in Kentucky history! Central Kentucky vocalist Michael Duncan has been singing his ass off since I can remember. After first meeting him in the mid Nineties, we played many shows together when I was also a vocalist. Trust me, this guy is leagues above most regional singers. He blows peeps away! Mike has an extremely impressive range that can go from low to ultra-high in one second. He can sing high notes like the high note in Pantera's Cemetary Gates." Very hard stuff like that! It made me wanna give up singing, hearing a dude like that wail! Mike played for Pownd, Shatter Messiah, and various other bands. He now sings for Last Sabbath Eighties cover band Wicked Sinsation. Louisville guitarist Jon Huffman has played in Sweet FA, Fire Dept, The Big Rock Show, and various other cover bands throughout the years and has proven to be a Louisville legend on the six string. I've gotten to know Jon much better over the last eight months and I like the guy quite a bit. He does my guitar work for me. He is a heck of a guitar tech!
The Last Sabbath - a Black Sabbath Tribute.
Pix by Ashley Murphy
Louisville bassist Rueben Sandoval has played for the Ozzy Tribute Crazy Train forever and a day, and is one of the best dudes in the city. I love this humble guy! Such a fine passionate skilled player! I've played many shows with him throughout the years as well.
Drummer Phillip Osbourne used to play with a band called Twist way back in the day; we played many shows together and always got along great. Phil also plays in Wicked Sinsation. I have flyers in my basement right now, of these guys bands and of my bands playing shows! Historic classic old-school shows from back when the scene was much better for original music. Together, these four cats have over a hundred and twenty years of experience, at least! We older guys have the goods, let me tell ya! And Last Sabbath proved that without a doubt at their debut show at Billiards, as they weaved their way through a set of Sabbath classics like War Pigs" Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," N. I. B," Fairies Wear Boots," Heaven and Hell," Sweet Leaf," and of course Iron Man;" and an encore of Never Say Die." Mike's vocals were on point and masterful as a diamond cutter has to be. I didn't hear one off key note the whole set. Heaven and Hell" was the vocal highlight of this evening I'm thinking. Dawg is a mixture of Geoff Tate meets Dio meets King Diamond. Always impressive.
I would especially like to point out that he is a humble dude and we have never had any bad words in over 25 years. Ole Jon Huffman was killing it this night, on his new Gibson Diablo guitar he has been ranting about for months! He would ask me advice for how he should modify it and I told him to ditch the gold hardware, black it out and make it evil. And ditch the doody stock pickups! He listened and that rare Gibson now looks freaking badass and has a serious bite to it. He was killing the Tony Iommi type solos this night. No complaints here. Jon has always been a beast on guitar. Guys like that make the rest of us lowly six-stringers wanna put the guitar down forever. Rueben and Phil were a very stable and solid bottom end, displaying both charisma and skill equally, as they ripped through the set as though they were washing dishes at home on a Monday, night. Another day, in the life of a rocker. The venue was packed for this debut, and the crowd ate it up. I predict these guys will be hitting other cities real soon! Make sure you see these veteran Kentucky legends of metal when they announce their next Louisville show.
Opening the show was Birmingham, Alabama's All Or Nothing, an Eighties tribute that people seem to love to death around here. They are pretty young dudes, thin, long hair, and the ladies seem to like them even more. Mucho respect for their musical taste for being so young! They played Skid Row's Monkey Business,", Motley Crue's Livewire"; Van Halen's Panama", Bon Jovi, and bands of that era. They are oozing with charisma and the extreme energy of youth. Vocalist Brett Carlisle has quite a range as well, hitting Sebastian Bach and Vince Neil notes almost to perfection. And those notes are not easy to hit by a long-shot! I heard a few mistakes, but nobody cared as they brought a great show and excitement with them. I'd go see them again in a heartbeat, and I don't even like cover bands that much, so that should tell you something!
All in all, it was a great night for all. And a great debut for Last Sabbath.
My question is When's the next show?
Disturbed, Staind and Bad Wolves coming to Riverbend:

Aaron Lewis coming to Louisville Palace on June 26:
You don't want to miss this guy! He stole the show at Louder than Life last year, and made other singers look foolish. He was amazing live! Very very good! This will prob sell out too, so get those tickets if you really wanna go.
Introducing Michael Moody's New Music Showcase:
Michael Moody has started an original music showcase at Brewskee's and it sounds like a decent little deal. Bands actually get paid and dont have to mess with any providing sound bullshit! And he even makes a video of your band playing for you! This is cool, and refreshing, for some promoters only care about money for themselves, and nothing else, not the quality of bands, the quality of gear they use, none of it. I don't know Mr Moody very well at all, but from what I do know he seems like a good dude. Down to earth, humble and trustworthy. We need more people like that in the scene. I'll be plugging Mr Moody's shows. so stay tuned for more info. His next one is Saturday, March 28, and it features A Forgotten Fury, Stout, 3DR and Laces Out. Some good metal bands! So get your lazy asses off your phone, and come out and support a good dude trying to do some real good for our diminishing scene!
Sammy Hagar, Whitesnake and Night Ranger coming to Riverbend:
Saturday, August 8!
I'd like to see this show! I saw Sammy in 1985 or 86 and he was awesome! It was my first out of town concert after just getting my drivers license and Dokken opened! Crazy fun! I saw Whitesnake about 12 years ago and they were still great! David Coverdale is still a vocal beast! And I love Night Ranger as well. I might have to make this one:)
Louisville Billiards Steps UP, Needs Local Music History Memorabilia:
Since so many venues are closing and Louisville Billiards seems to be stepping things up nicely, having more Louisville original music, and those guys are now currently trying to renovate the venue with historic oldschool memorabilia when our scene was outstanding! So they need old posters, gear, an old backdrop, signs, banners, mirrors, instruments, etc, etc- to put up on display at the club. You will get your stuff back after an allotted period of time, no doubt. They are trying to revamp it into a Hard-Rock-Cafe-type venue, all about the local music scene throughout the years! So if you have some cool stuff you can donate, let Mark know at 502-387-7665. I would like to thank those guys for making Louisville Billiards a place for everyone now. Cover bands and original bands all coming together to make music and have a good time. Many venues used to only do cover bands, but good things happen to those with an open mind! I remember when the Phoenix hill did nothing but covers, until I talked them into letting me have an original music showcase in January of 2000. Then it skyrocketed and became the longest running most popular original music showcases in Louisville history. It's a fact! Every month was packed! So hopefully more and more original bands will get the opportunity to play Billiards in the future. Both of my original bands have played there and we had fun each time, especially this last time with my old friends Crazy Train. So thanks Louisville Billiards and Marc Masden, for keeping the scene alive. We need it!
Geoff Tate to Debut at the Merc:
Former Queensryche singer Geoff Tate returns to Louisville at a new venue on March 11. I got to open for them the last time he was here at Headliners. What a great band! Don't miss this!
Fender's Den Of Sin: Fender is back!
He is helping bands once again and I'm happy he is back. This scene needs all the help it can get these days, so be sure to check out Fender's Den Of Sin on Sundays at 6 P. M. I think SWP will be performing on next Sundays show! Look up his show at Crossfire-radio. com! I will try to get some live video in next months edition! Support this man!!!
