Jordan Carlson

Name:Jordan Carlson

Age: 30

Instrument:

Guitar and Vocals

Band/Former Bands:

Current band is Skipping Stone.

Previously:

Guitar/Vocals in Louisville Transit, FuzZz, and occasionally that wierd kid at open mic night.

How long on instrument: 18 years

Equipment:Guitars: ESP LTD Steph Carpenter signature 7 string baritone telecaster, Legator Ninja 7 String Baritone with Steph Carpenter Fishman pickups, Gibson non-reverse Firebird, Fender Mexican Dtratocaster, Rickenbacker 325, and whatever acoustic I can get my hands on.

Amps: Line 6 HX stomp amp modeler, Orange Brett Hinds Signature Terror w/ Orange 212 V30.

Influences:Karnivool, Fair To Midland, Greenday, NoFX, Amigo The Devil, Benjamin Todd, Slipknot, and, of course, all the local talent!

My first gig: My first gig was an absolute nightmare! Lol! My band FuzZz played a benefit show at a local community college in Illinois when I was 16. We got to the show and found that ALL the other bands had dropped out last second. We played as long as we could covering tons of Greenday, the Offspring, Metallica, System of a Down, Tool, and some originals too. All 12 people in the audience were very impressed, I'm sure.

Hobbies: Outside of the music, I dabble in graphic design, maintain our websites, merchandise designs, do some woodworking, and practice as an amateur tattoo artist.

Favorite movies: I love terrible monster movies! I grew up watching Tremors, Starship Troopers, and loved them! Honorable mention to 90s Chris Farley and Adam Sandler films.

Favorite food:I'm what's known as a gas station food connoisseur. My work often had me traveling all around Indiana and Kentucky and I've found all the best chicken, pizza puffs, and potato wedges around! Nothing screams breakfast like an Irish Coffee Monster and a Pizza Puff.

Favorite place:My favorite place has to be backstage. As I kid, I grew up playing roadie for my dad in his traveling bands. At eight years old I was loading gear, acting as guitar tech, and running set ups for the whole show. Every time I'm about to go on stage, or I'm watching someone else preform from the sidelines it brings be back to those days of staying out all night and enjoying the music.

Favorite sports or team: I grew up just outside Chicago in the 90s. I got to see the Bulls play with all the greats. Jordan, Pippin, Rodman... it was amazing. We used to see the cubs play all the time too. They never won, but I got a real ballpark hot dog and that's all the mattered.

What I'm listening to nowadays: If you haven't checked out the EP from locals Sleep Aura you're missing out. I've been listening to a mixture of random things lately from: Architects, Fire From the Gods, Trivium, and some Norma Jean.

Coolest thing I've done: The coolest thing I've done is overcome my hearing loss. At 13 years old, just after I started playing guitar, I got hit in the head with a baseball bat. This lead to a ton of medical problems. I lost the majority of my hearing and developed an early onset case of Meneirs. It gave me vertigo for years and years and continues to degenerate my hearing. I continued to play for a few years, but ultimately told myself that my time on stage was over before it even started. A few years ago I moved to Louisville and met my now wife Erica who encouraged me to get back out there. After years of her pushing me to get out of the basement I began going to open mics and answered a few musicians wanted ads on Craigslist. That's how I met the boys in Skipping Stone and got to where I am today. I recently got fitted for some hearing aids and they help a ton with speech and hearing in general. If I can pass any wisdom on, I'd just say never give up on your dreams.

Most embarrassing moment: I'm sure I've done a ton of stupid stuff over the years. But the first thing that comes to mind is that first gig. We played through most of what we knew and were pulling through whatever we could play. My brother was singing and playing guitar with us at the time. He decided he didn't know the next song in our set and decided to go sit down in the audience while we struggled our way through. That whole show was just a nightmare. But we got through it and I'm better for it.

Bad Habits: I love punk rock music. Something about those driving beats and punchy bass lines get me hyped! That may or may not be the root cause for me wanting to play everything at the speed of light. Sorry boys. But if you turn on 'Out of Control' by Rancid and you don't want to start ripping the place apart, there is just something inherently wrong with you.

What was your first concert ever: I've seen more than I can remember. But the one that I think of as my 'first concert' was Kansas opening for Styx. Great show!

If you could meet a Rockstar (past or present), who would it be, and why: Of all the 'Rockstars' I have met, they all have been very humble. It used to be so hard to tell myself that they are just people. In my early teens I idolized Billy Joe from Greenday. Now that I am older I think I'd really enjoy a conversation with him.

Who do you love: I love my wife Erica, my kids Alayna, Noah, and newborn Rebel. I love my friend and brothers in Skipping Stone. My friends Fender and Cindy, and all of the local talent here in Louisville. Thank you everyone for your support. I look forward to getting back on stage February 18 at Louisville Billiards Club for our EP release party with Boombox Poets and Year of the Gun.
