DVD Review: 1960s Classics Come Back to Life
T-A-M-I SHOW (Shout Factory)

Martin Kasdan Jr.
BUY THIS YESTERDAY! If you are reading Louisville Music News, you are a music fan. Therefore, you need to have this long-unavailable movie in your collection.
This is a lovingly restored DVD of the 1964 "Teenage Music Awards International" concerts, featuring the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, the Barbarians, Marvin Gaye, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Lesley Gore (surprisingly strong), Jan & Dean, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (check out "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and a super hot version of "Mickey's Monkey"), and the Supremes.
Oh, and capping it off, James Brown and the Famous Flames, reluctantly followed by the Rolling Stones, who played their hearts out. It was all I could do to watch the film in order, without skipping to James Brown. To my knowledge, this is the earliest available film footage of Mr. Dynamite, doing the mashed potatoes from one side of the stage to the other, dropping to his knees, and driving the integrated crowd into total frenzy.
All too often you and I have read reviews that say "[fill in the blank] is worth the price by itself." When it comes to the James Brown performance here, it is, in fact, worth the price of the DVD. Mick and the boys gave it their all, in what must be one of the Stones' most fervent performances, closing with a blistering "I'm All Right."
This film is legendary, and rightly so. Kudos to all who worked out the legal kinks, remastered the film and audio, and in any way whatsoever were responsible for finally making this available.
