Boy am I disappointed.

I've held my tongue too long once again, and now I must purge myself of things I've been holding in. As many of you already know, I created the Annual Rock For Kosair Benefit in 2005, and each year we have a huge concert at Phoenix Hill Tavern , on every stage, featuring the region's best original rock bands. All proceeds go to buy toys for the kids at Kosair Charities for Christmas.

We also have popular Guitar Giveaways from generous businesses like Professional Musicians Center, First Quality Music and Uncle Sam's Jamms. It's turned into a big deal. We've raised over twenty-two-thousand dollars worth of brand new toys to take to Kosair Charities for Christmastime!

As you can imagine, the goal is to take as many toys down there as we can. In order to do that, you must get bands that draw lots of people. Popular bands! The problem is, many of the bigger, more popular bands in town have apparently turned into uncaring A-holes unwilling to play a Children's Hospital Benefit. Somewhere along the way, some of these bands have lost their sense of charity and the Christmas spirit of giving. Rock For Kosair and Christmas go hand in hand.

I understand the need to make money but this is a once-a-year benefit to help poor and sick children at Kosair have a better Christmas. One would think that is far more important than a paycheck from one lousy show. I hate saying this, but sometimes my heart overpowers my brain (as little as it is).

I've thought long and hard over whether I should mention this. To be perfectly honest with you folks, I'm plumb sick of these unwarranted egos from bands these past few years who haven't done jack chit out of Kentucky. And I'm not alone by a long shot. I've heard other people complaining about these same bands, some pretty low-character stuff, so I am far from being alone when I say that some of these bands have turned into stuck-up jerks.

Heck, it's almost to the point where I wish some of them would get signed and hurry up and leave, just to rid Louevil of the over-inflated egos they've developed. I started some of these bands out many years ago when they came begging for a first show. I have shown the bands much love over the years in my newspaper column, and yes, it is very disappointing to see these same guys act this way now. For the kids' sake, mind you. I could care less if they played my shows at all on a regular basis, but this one show is "special" and it would have been nice to have these guys I've shown so much love to over the years knock this out of the ballpark. We need the big boys to pull the toys!

The few bands I'm referring to have given excuse after lame excuse for not playing the Kosair Benefit and I'm sick of it. Sorry, but I've been doing this way too long to be lied to. Take your excuses to someone who believes them. None of these bands are signed or nationally touring acts.

The truth is … they knew about this benefit show months ago, and deliberately chose NOT to help.

I know the difference between "can't" and "won't."

I don't hate any of these bands, or have animosity towards any of them. I truly admire what they have done in Louisville and have, in fact, heaped praise upon them media-wise. I just wish they could be more like when they started, like when I met them: humble. Nice. Down to earth. The band I first met.

Those guys would have helped a children's hospital in a second. I was unsure whether I should say this, but after dealing with unsavory egos and stuck-up bands for years now, I decided to ask a few people online how they feel about some of the city's top acts dissing the kids at Kosair at a most important time, and should they be exposed? Or am I wrong about being upset? Lord knows I'm not perfect by any means! Here is what the majority said.

Angie S: I think they should be exposed. I don't know about you all, but here's my take on it. There have been several bands, actors, whatever that I have really liked, and then when I find out how big of egomaniacs they are, or how they aren't willing to help, I lose all respect. These people should be setting an example, and teaching their followers that everyone should pay it forward. If you're such a douche that you won't even give back to CHILDREN, people should know who they're looking up to. I don't like the thought of supporting someone who isn't willing to support others.

Jeff A: Yes brother, they should be exposed. They should take a trip to a children's hospital, and see these little precious kids that have no hair, and sick as a dog, with cancer or whatever. That would put them in their place real quick.

Stacy V: Eddy, scream it from the roof tops! It's for kids FFS!

Michelle V: Call them out!! That will at least let their fan base know that they are self-absorbed pr**ks! Nobody wants to support people who only think of themselves and don't give a flyin' phuck about disadvantaged children at the holidays! Maybe then when their pocket books take a dive they will get the message. Just sayin'.

Kathy S: A band that has roots in Louisville and can't step up to the plate to help the children out has apparently forgotten where they came from. Who knows, one of those sick kid's parents could be a fan that has help them rise up to where they are today. I think it is not only greedy, but very selfish of a band to not want to help kids out, and they should also be exposed to their fans so that people know what they are about. Without the fans: the people (adult or child), they would not be where they are today.

Amy L: Sad indeed. I'm tired of these bands that act like they are too good to help anyone out in a time of need when we band promoters bend over backwards to help them when they come crying!! I feel ya' Eddy. Total bullchit indeed.

I really like this final one from a wise fellow named Brian Richardson, who made me chill out and wise up a little bit.

Brian Richardson: Mr. Metal, I think, is in a better position than most of us reading this, to know what bands are doing or not doing for what reasons. He works with and keeps in contact with these bands, it's his job. Now that being said, I think we should all just be thankful to the bands that are willing and able to give their time, and understanding of the bands who simply can't make it work, and as far as any band who feels they are above such things, forget em. You are only wasting your time and energy by bit**in about them and judging them. What comes around, goes around as they say. And anyway, to name those said A-hole bands would only be giving them more publicity.

Negative or not, publicity is publicity. They simply are not worth it.

Sorry to those who were curious, but I changed my mind. I have decided to take Mr Richardson's advice and not divulge the bands in question.

There are always going to be people who think their poo don't stink, and all the complaining in the world cannot change that.

GOOD PEOPLE

For all the people who don't care, there are people who have stepped forward and given all they can for this cause. These people are awesome. And to be honest, people like this are the reason I still do what I do for this music scene. Sometimes the douches in this scene really grate on my nerves really bad.

I'd like to mention these individuals who gave been very giving to the Rock For Kosair Events over the years. One of the guys is Dave Moody, bassist for The Zoo Kings. Dave does more charity shows than anyone I've ever met, and the guy has people's respect and admiration for it. You can tell he really cares. He's played the RFK shows 3 years I think. Another person is Rahul Borkar and the guys in Nova Red, a guy who never backs away from helping the kids (he would play in the cold if he had to.)

David 'Sailor' Bryant of 16 Bones is also another guy with a big heart, for always donating a performance and even going on Channel 41 last year with me at 6:30 a.m. to pass the word on about the Benefit. Big Al of Boozer is another caring person, who donated his time and effort to playing the event and making awesome event shirts for free. Truly a kind and classy move for a South End boy. Ha ha.

I will be amassing a crew to help me with this event. I cannot do this alone. Nor do I want to.

Angel Hall, Tim Hicks, Frank Karaglanis, Heather Martin, Big Al and a few other cool laid-back people will be helping me with the task of raising a mountain of toys for the kiddies.

I don't care who plays my show, all I care about is taking as much toys to Kosair as we can.

THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS HERE.

And the fact is, these bands acting selfish this way are greatly reducing what we can do for Kosair for Christmas, when they desperately need it the most. I have talked to the lady in charge at Kosair and I assure you, times are bad, and the top bands refusing couldn't have come at a worse time.

So I may have overreacted a bit about all this. Sorry if I may have offended anyone, but I truly believe I am 100% right about this. Or I surely wouldn't have brought this up.

I beg of you, my loyal readers, to come to ROCK FOR KOSAIR VI at Phoenix Hill Tavern on Friday November 19 regardless of who is playing. FOR THE KIDS! Even if you hate my guts.

Kosair has done amazing things for our community. It's time we pay them back when they need it most. I'm still building a killer show lineup for you peeps, and I promise a fantastic show.

And you also get the original Anthrax, too! Wow. I'll be honest. I love Anthrax but never liked vocalist John Bush when he replaced Joey Belladonna many years ago. Joey Belladonna is back and I haven't seen them with Joey since 1991, so I am VERY stoked about seeing Anthrax too.

To me, Joey is what made Anthrax Anthrax. The high vocals, the humor of such lyrics like "shut up shut up, I don't want to hear your mouth. Your mother made a monster so get the hell out of my house. Your always in my way like a beast on my back, were you dropped as a baby? it's brains you lack."

Fargin classic! And you get metal guitar legend Scott Ian on the guitar! The cat who invented moshing, for god's sake.

Then you get Slayer for your main course. They guys always put on a great show. Seeing them with Judas Priest & Black Sabbath was one of the best concerts I've seen! Tom, Kerry and the guys will be coming to slay you Louevil rockers, rest assured of that!

Guitarist Kerry King of slayer stated "I've been trying since 2004 to work with Jägermeister to make this Jägermeister Music Tour Trifecta happen. I always have such a good time on the Jägermeister tour, and this time we are coming through with Megadeth & Anthrax, so you know that everybody will be at the top of their game for these shows."  Dave Mustaine of Megadeth also admits "It's a rush to finally be a part of the Jägermeister Music Tour!"

This is a can't-lose show, so you should do what you can to get your hands on some tickets because it's doubtful this will come around again anytime soon, if ever. Pawn yer mammy's gold if you got to. Ha. Just kidding! I'll see all of you freaks at this show. Be sure to say hello and let me know how much you hate my column. Here is one raw and nasty lineup featuring some heavy hitters of metal. Tuesday, October 5 at Expo 5, you got Zack Wylde, the guitar demon himself, ( Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist for years) and his band Black Label Society headlining, with major stoner rockers Clutch, and on top of that, Children Of Bodom is on the bill, too. Heck yeah. Personally I want to see Children Of Bodom again! That's who I am excited about seeing. Alexi's classical metal guitar solos are wicked. For those of you up front at this show, bring an umbrella, unless you want Zack to spit on you! He spits more than any 20 times the amount a normal man does! I predict lots of whiskey and drunken revelry at this event. It should kick lots of butt. I've never been much of a Zakk fan; I've always preferred Randy and Jake E. Lee over Wylde. Zakk could never get the Randy stuff down pat in my opinion. And we all know Ozzy's best stuff was the older stuff with the late great Randy Rhodes. Zakk is still a wicked player, though, there's no doubt about that. I've always admired his pinch harmonic "Squalling" technique that he uses so fervently. Squall's rule.

Hopefully, it will sound better than the last time they were here, at Coyote's. It sounded like 'butt' last time. Just plain terrible. Distorted to the point of annoying. But it was the soundman at Coyote's fault, not the bands.

30 Seconds To Mars Coming:

Actor Jay Leto and his band are coming to Expo 5 on Monday October 11, and it should be a great show. I'm not too familiar with his stuff, but I heard a song on the radio the other day that sounded pretty cool. It was real laid back and kinda trippy, and the vocals were pretty cool. I kind of liked it. Plenty of other people like it, that's for sure. A lot of young people are into this band. So I bet Expo 5 will be slam packed for this emo-grungeish, alternative rock engagement.

Check out Jay Leto's acting in "Chapter 27," he is pretty good.

Superunknown 'Live' Review:

I've been reading about Lexington Kentucky original band Superunknown for a while and I've been perplexed how a local original band can land such wicked opening spot gigs. These guys have opened for KISS, Motley Crüe and Aerosmith on huge stages like Riverbend. Well, I finally booked them to play Phoenix Hill and I finally saw what the big deal is. These guys rock. Total pros.

Not only were they nice guys, but the talent here is off the charts, especially singer Ronnie Rodriguez, who reminds me of Geoff Tate of Queensryche, or the late great Ray Gillen, formerly with Badlands, Sun Red Sun, and who also did a short stint with none other than Black Sabbath! Ronnie has some serious chops vocally and is quite possibly the best I've heard in Kentucky. Jaws dropped when this dude started singing.

Makes some of these big-headed Louisville singers look like croaking crooners. Range, soul and power combined. Guitarist Todd Stricklin has the quintessential guitar sound and tone that every budding guitarist dreams of having. It's clear Todd could be making big bucks doing a high profile cover band, but he chooses originals. Very commendable indeed.

The bass and drums were spot on. No complaints here. Very tight. I really like their song "Forever."

The band had everyone digging them, and Louevil would surely like to see some more of the these Lexington natives. The musicianship here is off the hook as the band introduced themselves to Louevil in high fashion. I tried to get them to play Rock For Kosair 6, but they already had prior engagements.

The band ended up playing a medley of Sabbath/Zeppelin to wrap up the night. I'm glad I booked these guys. Having these friendly über-talented individuals come play my show with NO egos or demands was a nice change. I just wish some of these bands around here were more like Superunknown, Kentucky's cream of the crop.

93.1 The Fox's Gobblestock 2010:

I have a great relationship with 93.1 the Fox. Everyone there now is cool as heck, especially the big cheese there, Charlie Steele, a dude who genuinely likes to help the community and rock scene. He has agreed to help charity events numerous times and has always helped with Rock For Kosair. So all of you be sure to come to their big Annual Gobblestock Thanksgiving Bash at Phoenix Hill on Thanksgiving. These guys have always supported us Louevil bands. so show some love. This should be a great show. This year's bands are: Flaw, Hot Action Cop, Heaven Hill and Pop Evil. That is going to be one busy night!!! Should be interesting on how they pull off having so many great bands on one stage. This is your chance to see Flaw, as they will be home for a little bit before they head out West to tour. Hopefully, they'll play that Tom Petty cover "Breakdown" like they did last time. I really liked that rendition. And you don't want to miss those funny guys from Hot Action Cop, the singer cracks me up every time I see them. And you already know I dig Pop Evil. Super cool guys and a great party band to boot! Heaven Hill will be playing again this year. And breaking in a new drummer as well. They should break out the Kenny Loggins tune again! That was good fun. So after eating turkey all day, bring yo butts up to the Hill for a killer rock show. It should be pretty good!

Heaven Hill's New Drummer:

After the departure of drummer Ivan Arnold from the band's fold, Heaven Hill searched for awhile before coming across Cleveland transplant Ricky Muzik, who at the time was drumming for my band Year Of The Gun. Ricky is only 21 but a talented and energetic drummer nonetheless. In all my years in music, I've never met anyone who wanted to be a rock star so bad. Ricky would stick his peter in a razor-lined knothole if there was a recording contract in it for him. Someday, some how, I predict this young rocker will get his wish.

He has a great chance now and hopefully this dedicated musician gets his wish. If any band in Louevil can do it, it would be Heaven Hill. I guess if you are going to lose your drummer, it makes it a little better if it's to such a good band. Ha ha. So congrats to Ricky for his new gig.

Rock For Kosair VI Teasers:

Okay, I got some teasers for you Louevil rockers. The show is Friday November 19 at Phoenix Hill. Every stage! Bands confirmed so far are; The Zoo Kings (the runner up in the "Open For KISS" contest) and a band that puts on a true high energy rock 'n' roll show!), the return of Ugly (featuring louevil rock veterans guitar wizard Kevin MCreery and bass master Frank Green), the long awaited Factor 9 (reunion), the return of BoneJinn (yes, Marty is back!), Nova Red, 13^th Level (hardcore reunion w/ former cover band vocalist of the year Billy Burton), Some Kind Of Saint (returning after a three-month layoff due to injury), Burning Babylon, 16 Bones and Trust Divided. I'm still working on the lineup, so stay tuned for the final tally on November 1.

And don't forget- we'll be giving away guitars like we do every year! This year so far it's Uncle Sam's Jamms, First Quality Music and Professional Musicians Center who will be donating guitars.

An Amazing Metal Band is Coming:

Headliners, Tuesday, October 26. Can you say 'underrated'? And even that is an understatement. Only true diehard metal/progressive metal fans know of their work. The band is Seattle's, Nevermore, a ridiculously talented band that has been a favorite of mine for many years. The singer Warrel Dane used to sing for late Eighties thrashers Sanctuary, another band that I was really into. Bassist Jim Sheppard was also in Sanctuary. I can only say good things about this brilliant, experimental and über-technical entity. Each musician is a literal master of his art. It doesn't get much better. Guitarist Jeff Loomis is a regular in guitar magazines worldwide and even has his own Schecter guitar line. He is one of the best metal guitarists in the world, rivaling Marty Friedman, destroying Kirk Hammet, and slaughtering the Lamb Of God's. Dude is a beast.

Vocalist Warrel Dane is a lyrical genius. His lyrics are different and his syllable placements are downright bizarre, but cool. He is in my top 10 favorite vocalists of all time. No song is similar, nor does he let metal music take emotion away from the song as a whole. He weaves emotion through the metal in a way that few seldom can and that has made a mark on me.

The band is touring in support of their 7^th album The Obsidian Conspiracy, released in June of this year. The album debuted #132 on the Billboard 200 charts, their first album to ever do so. Amazingly they have never played Louevil before, so I am very excited that one of my faves are coming to my hometown. You will find a feast of amazing guitar capability and vocals you don't hear everyday. Fans of Iron Maiden , Judas Priest, Megadeth, Dragonforce should love these guys. If you are any kind of real metal fan, this rare show should be on the 'do not miss' list. Trust me. Warbringer and Hatesphere will be playing too.

Introducing 5^th Omen:

I'm digging this recording quality from one of Louevil's new projects. This sounds excellent. Whoa, I want to record there! Mike Taylor Studios, huh? Sweet.

The band is 5^th Omen, and I am quite impressed with the music and songwriting. I'm listening to "Show Yourself." The chorus is very hooky and melodic, especially when the chorus slows down to really melodic leads WITH effects. Finally. Lately, I've heard a ton of guitar leads on demos that were so dry, it was hideous. Guitarists! Listen to this lead during the chorus, and that is what I mean about wetting your lead sound some. You enhance the lead. Very nice hooky guitar work by John Drury. The acoustic sounds/tones here are brilliant, and exactly what I would want. The volumes are all set perfectly and the result is outstanding. The more I listen to this the more I'm digging it. The vocals of Steve McNeer (who can also play drums) are melodic and tasteful. The has a lower vocal range great for acoustics and slow stuff. I didn't know that Steve even sang. I know he used to play drums with a few louevil bands. That's cool when you find out people have other talent that you didn't know about.

He also has that Kentucky accent that is evident on this recording. I never realized how country we sounded until I went to California a few years back. I felt like Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies. That's okay though, we are from the South and should be proud of what we are.

The 5^th Omen sound is beautiful rock, with a "redneck in love" feeling that can span a lifetime.

It's about experience and emotion, that's easy to see. The band made a video for "Show Yourself" that is pretty cool. "Beautiful End" starts out killer, with a sweet acoustic and keyboard combo. Awesome.

How can anyone not like this? I'm glad Frank Karaglanis turned me on to this band.

5^th Omen is definitely a band of thinkers, capable of weaving a great masterpiece of music. For a new band? Wow. I can't wait to see them in action. See them November 1 at Phoenix Hill Tavern.

Flaw's New Guitarist:

Flaw's new guitarist is Chris Marple, formerly of Caldera and Kentucky Deathwish. Guitarist Andy Russ had to leave the band after health problems and Chris was more than glad to step in and help out the band. Chris was on tour with Flaw as a bassist for a while, but now they've let him play his main instrument and I'm sure it sounds great, as Chris is a great guitarist.

Chris is another musician who really wanted to get out there and tour and show the world what he can do. Now he is getting that chance because of flaw. You can see the new lineup on Thanksgiving night at Phoenix Hill Tavern at Gobblestock.

Ashes Eve, The New Stuff:

I don't much about this young band at all. I've heard the name many times but somehow we have never worked together. I'm checking out their new music and it rocks! Louevil has so many great bands and musicians, and this is a perfect example. Sound quality rocks, the band rocks, the singer can sing and scream (just what I like) , the guitars sound good and with good tone. The bass and drums are perfect, too. Yay. We are on a roll here.

"Sparta" is a metalish song with melody and groove. Interlocking melodic leads, nice power chord work and chunky rhythms make this a pleasure to explore. Metal with feeling. I like it so much that I booked them to play November 5 at Phoenix Hill Tavern. I am looking forward to seeing this reproduced live, which always the true test of a band. I've heard good stuff about them, so I know they will do well. Their sound is modern-ish, but there are metal moments for sure that keep you on your toes. A few of the riff remind me of Disturbed or something similar; new, but heavy and energetic!

A few more guitar solos would have been cool. That's my only complaint, but then again I'm a guitarist. There aren't many solos in music these days, so maybe I'm just being an old fuddy-duddy.

"Little Suzie" is a bit heavier and more technical of a style. I really love slow breakdowns in songs that lead back to heavy. These screams by Justin Jackson are sick (in a good way) and can go to melodic in the blink of an eye. Catchy tunes so far. I admit to being an old-school metal cheeseball, but I could listen to stuff like this anytime without it getting on my nerves. And I'm such a picky bastage that that is rare. Nice bass work by Stephen Smithson brings out the music. I'm digging this bass tone, too. I bet it's an Ampeg Bass Amp. Very nice songwriting and structuring is evident here. I can't believe I haven't really heard them before. Oh well. I guess I can make up for it now!

Anyways, this is a very good young Louevil new rock/modern metal band with melody and darn good vocals and groove. These guys are pros. All I can say is "Hell Yeah!"

Knights In Shively Armor:

This is a newer band from Shively comprised of newcomers to the louevil music scene. Stacy Hendrix, the only member who has been very active in the Louevil scene, is their new drummer; he also drums for E-Flat. While new to the scene, these guys are pretty talented and the music sounds good, as well as the songwriting. The first song, "Ariaogony," is a hooky, groove-oriented rock tune that had me rockin'. I don't know about the recording quality, but it doesn't sound too bad. Some reverb on singer Josh Allen's voice would have been nice, as the guy can actually sing.

Buzz Gatti's guitar work is decent, but a bit too dry for my tastes once again. This band reminds me of an older Louevil band called Dump Gang that played back in the day. I don't care for the CD sound quality. The guitar sounds like it needs a little more gain/beef than what it has. Like it's struggling to keep going. A gain boost is badly needed here. I have a funny feeling that this is one of those bands whose CD doesn't do them justice at all. So I'll have to see them tear some stuff up live to make my final judgment, but there is talent clearly there.
