This City Goes Crazy Around Derby!!!

Derby time!!! Yes! I love this time of year. Fresh mown grass, great weather, great friends having fun, a bunch of cool original rock shows, and ahhh, the smell of fresh horse doo-doo that permeates all through my neighborhood. Well, maybe that last one isn't so great, but yes, I live two blocks from the infamous Churchill Downs, and things do get kinda out of control around here, especially with our Louisville Cardinals winning the 2013 National Championship title recently. Go Cards!!! Gunfire. Partying like you've never seen. Gotta love those South End phuckers.

There is always a bunch of stuff going down for Derby. Last yearm I got to play Phoenix Hill's big outdoor Derby Eve Bash and, boy, was that a great time. I got a huge kick out of playing outdoors on a big stage in front of hundreds of partiers. This year, PHT has a yet another slew of good-time rock shows for all you peeps: Jackyl on Derby Eve, 10 years, Aranda, Saving Abel, Framing Hanley and a lot more. It seems that all the serious rockers converge to PHT every year to hang out outside and have fun with a multitude of friends, while seeing some good national and Louisville bands. This year, they aren't featuring Louisville bands on the outside concert bill, which is a letdown of sorts, considering that has become an annual staple for us original bands dying for such sweet exposure.

A bunch of us went to the Derby Infield last year too, and that was an adventure, indeed. I'm going to try to go again this year if I can afford it. A person needs at least $300 to ride that train, by my books. Last year, I remember almost having a panic attack because at one point I was completely surrounded by about 50,000 people at a standstill when trying to leave the premises. The crowd did not move for about 40 minutes. I felt like a sardine in a can. That sucked, but I still had a sweet time. One year at Thunder Over Louisville. I saw a dude get thrown out of a car doing about 35 MPH, and the back tire hit the guy's head and ricocheted the dude's head off like a pinball. It was crazy. And I bet many of you remember the infamous Central Block Party? An annual South End Derby Party that got soooo out of control that they had to quit having it? Sound familiar? Another time, some drunk rednecks jumped me and my friend (and knocked out my friend's tooth) at the Derby Chow Wagon, and I ended up getting sweet revenge almost running them over in my Camaro. They dove out of the road, headfirst, into hard gravel to escape my wrath. This city goes nuts around Derbytime! I just hope that nobody tries to blow up people like they did in Boston. I have always thought that our Kentucky Derby would be a prime target for such nutcases, being so far away from the coastline and all the security forces so concentrated therein. I wish I could get my hands on a greasy, low-down terrorist. I would bite a plug out of his neck and spit it at them!

This Derby should be eventful, lots of shows, and great times with good friends. So let's start this month off right with a safe, fun Derby. Use designated drivers or take a cab if you have the means to do so. Or call a friend or family member to pick your drunk arse up!!! We here at LMN hope you have a heck of a time. Be safe...

Jeff Hanneman of Slayers Dies At 49

Jeff Hanneman

Guitarist Jeff Hanneman of one of the great American heavy metal bands of all time, Slayer, passed away on Thursday, May 2 at the age of 49, of liver failure that might have been the result to a spider bite that Hanneman failed to get immediate treatment for. As a guitarist myself, and someone who grew up listening to this man's work quite frequently, I can say that Jeff Hanneman wrote some of the most brutal, intricate and powerful guitar compositions I’ve ever heard. The rhythms of Hanneman were absolutely crushing, but there was still massive groove. his leads were lightning, quick and ferocious, and so fast I wouldn’t even attempt to try to learn it. He kept things simple as far as guitar sound/tone goes too. Not a ton of effects like most bands use. He barely used any, if at all. Dude wrote one-of-a-kind music, that's for sure. He paved the way for metalheads the world over. And yes, it was JEFF who did most of the writing for SLAYER. I have had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, partying with him and seeing him perform front row at OZZfest in front of 20,000 people.

My hair was blown back like as if a semi had passed me doing 90MPH!!!

It was an experience I won’t forget. Shredding personified.

Metal has lost a true “Game Changer.” Jeff Hanneman’s guitar work gave metal a new direction for generations to build upon. A heavy-metal-guitar-playing Christopher Columbus is what he was!! I doubt metal would be like it is now without his contribution. He proved that heavy metal bands with a darker more sinister image/views can be successful, and 11 albums & a few Grammy awards later, I would say the man has left his mark on this world in League High Letters Of Blood.

R.I.P., dude. I hope they have a kickass Marshall amp that is 50 feet tall waiting for you!!!

Iron Maiden and Megadeth coming to Nashville in Sept:

Here is one you should surely mark your calendars for: Thursday, September 5 in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena (I reviewed The Scorpions and Ratt there a few years ago, and it was a nice venue with good staff who treated us great). It's British metal legends Iron Maiden, with American thrashers Megadeth! Last summer, I drove to Indy to see/review Maiden and it was superb! Well worth the two-and-a-half hour drive. It was one of the best shows I've seen in a good long time, so do not miss this chance to see one of the all-time metal greats live in action. This is something special to see and hear! And count Megadeth on top of this? A Must See!!! I about had an orgasm when I noticed the tour has Testament, Overkill and Anthrax on the show bills out West, but I am not sure if we will get the same lineup way out here in the Midwest. I hope so. That would be extra icing on top of the cake to have Testament, Overkill and Anthrax! But if not, Maiden and Megadeth is enough for the likes of me! Get your tickets now! And don't forget where you heard this!

New Black Sabbath Song "God Is Dead" Review:

I have been a fan of Black Sabbath/Ozzy since I was a kid, when the older bullies in my neighborhood used to ride around the hood cranking Sabbath at full volume. How can one not like Ozzy's signature vocals or Tony Iommi's classic metal guitar riffs? I can say that Ozzy is a huge inspiration for me wanting to play music. My childhood best friend Erich Otto used to steal Ozzy albums by putting them up his shirt, even though the kid was a beanpole. So yeah, we used to play those albums to death! Well, Ozzy and Black Sabbath have reunited to do a new album called 13, which is scheduled to be released on June 11. They have already released one single, "God Is Dead." I was very anxious to hear the new song. It starts out rather slow and morbid with some laid-back clean guitar. Ozzy sounds great so far. Great lyrics! I wonder if Geezer Butler wrote them, like he did back in the day? Probably.

The chorus is heavy, of course, and very much BS material. It's kind of a bluesy riff, but it's still all Iommi to the max. It's a bit simplistic but pounding nonetheless. Sadly, drummer Bill Ward did not appear on the album. Drummer Brad Wilk (Rage against The Machine) filled in for the aging drum god Bill Ward. It's at the end of the song when things get interesting. The music sort of takes off towards the end kind of like the song "Black Sabbath." Bassist Geezer Butler absolutely goes off. Such a great bassist/musician. Tony Iommi's a beast on guitar, but I would have liked to hear more of some of Iommi's lead guitar solos. It's great to see him rocking out once again, despite his recent cancer issues. I hope he can get past this health problem. Tony says "In myself, I'm feeling OK now. When I first found that I had the illness, it was a dark time and I was a bit spaced out. Since we've been in rehearsals and recording sessions, I've felt pretty good — great even. I think that the album and tour have given me something immediate to get my teeth into, something to accomplish." And accomplish something he did! To put out the first Sabbath album with Ozzy in 35 years is something! And I for one will be buying this the first day it comes out. Some of the other song titles are "Zeitgeist," "Live Forever," "Damaged Soul" and "Age Of Reason." Sabbath is touring this year, but Iommi's cancer treatment is putting a damper on touring, so the USA will only get two shows, and they are on the West Coast, so it looks like we are out of luck for the moment at least.

May Musician of the Month :

This Month's spotlight shines on Max Maxwell, drummer of The Louisville Crashers. Don't miss this cool interview with the Louisville rock scene drum veteran.

Jefferson Tarc Bus and Singer Jack Brizendine Part Ways:

One of Louisville's top cover bands, Jefferson Tarc Bus, has parted ways with vocalist Jack Brizendine. Jack Brizendine says "I have been flat out living this rock 'n' roll lifestyle in A+ bands for 19 years and I have changed very much over the last 5-6 years and when it calls for me to be "rock 'n' roll crazy Jack," it has become very hard to find that guy … cuz I'm not him anymore. I had actually planned on quitting this fall because I just can't handle the rock and roll party atmosphere anymore without taking it to far and hurting myself and upsetting people. I just need to step away for my own good, and for the good of my friends, Dave, Junie and Steven. I wish those guys all the best and I hope everyone keeps showing JTB love and support." I have to admit that is a very honest and humble quote from Mr Brizendine.

Jefferson Tarc Bus will continue on with vocalist Todd O' Mera from the Horizontal Boogie Band, who will be filling in for future shows until a decision is made about who the permanent replacement will be. I'll keep you informed.

Homegrown Mayhem VI Review:

I recently got to get out of town for a bit and play a show in front of some new faces down Radcliff way. It couldn't have come at a better time, because the way things in Louisville were, it was really starting to get to me. Louisville bands and their "cliques." Sheesh. Seems playing in front of 80 – 100 new faces that appreciate good music was just what the doctor ordered. The event was called Homegrown Mayhem VI and it was a show featuring originals from around that area, mostly. Acoustic rocker Luie Brangers (also from Splattertribe Entertainment) hosted the event and is a great guy to work with. I admit I had never played my music in a Mexican restaurant (Los Margaritas) before, but it ended up being a pretty good night for all. Bands on the bill were Luie Brangers, an acoustic hellraiser who weaved his way through many a redneck song while sounding good in the process, and Tree Meets Sky, a young and apparently popular alternative rock band from that area that had some good moments. Good vocals, nice intricate bass playing, decent songs! I might have to bring those guys to Louisville soon. Other bands on the bill were Six Foot Fall, another young band that we've rocked out with before that has some nice potential. Those guys are about to put out a demo soon. And also Hurt Circle, whom I did not get to see, unfortunately, although I have heard great things about them. Apparently, they have had quite a few of these homegrown events down in Radcliff before. It's a great way to see some live original music and I was glad to be a part of it. Hopefully I'll be invited to be a part of another in the future! Good people and good music. The food was good, even though we had to wait to two hours because they were so crowded. Be sure to drive down and check out the next one, Homegrown Mayhem 7 on Saturday May 4 with national touring artist Sykosis, Mettal Maffia (Ohio), Tree Meets Sky, The Tiffany Tucker Band plus Luie Brangers. It's at the Los Margarita Mexican Restaurant in Radcliff.

Soundgarden on May 10:

This show at Louisville Palace on Friday May 10 is sold out, as I said it probably would be! So you should have listened to me and gotten your tickets when it was first announced. Of course you can hang around the venue the day of show to see what luck could befall you. You never know, you could luck out somehow!

Man, was I stoked about this show at Diamonds! I ate a microwave sausage biscuit sandwich that afternoon and it made me sooo sick. So I wasn't sure I was even going to be able to go because my innards hurt so bad. After hours of unpleasantness (and several types of medicine) that I won't mention, I finally felt a little bit better, so we headed up to the show in time to see openers Hate Eternal, a band from St Petersburg, Florida. The first thing I noticed was that the venue had moved the stage to another area. I like it much better the new way! It sounded better and was better for the people! Good improvement for Diamonds.

I feel bad that I wasn't there to review Incursion like I had planned to do but what can you do when you are hovering over a toilet, yakking? They will just have to plan another show soon!

Hate Eternal was death metal to the max. The vocals were typical death metal doody, raaa raahhh rahhhhhhhh stuff, but the guitars of Erik Rutan were special. This guy shreds bigtime, but in a way that emanates feeling, emotion and pure darkness, something you don't see very often in death metal guitar. Usually, it's just speed with no feeling. His style was wicked and his playing was original. He had an awesome red BC Rich neck through Ironbird guitar with custom inlay that must have cost thousands. The drummer was pretty sick, too. So after a brutal set, everyone was ready for Los Angeles' Fear Factory.

Fear Factory came on with no amps. They use that new POD Technology where you don't need amps.

That kind of scared me, because I'm used to a wall of sound emanating from the stage at any given time. But it seemed to be a decent enough sound through the PA system. First thing I noticed was that there was no Christian Olde Wolbers (former guitarist and bassist for FF), and the guy who replaced him on bass guitar looked like the guy that played guitar for Chimaira. WTF! When I got home, I looked it up and I was right. Matt DeVries joined FF in 2012 as a bassist, which is fine by me, because Matt is a beast on any stringed instrument, guitar or bass! On drums was Mike Heller, an unknown. It kinda bummed me out, because I miss original drummer Raymond Hererra, who is a super nice and humble guy and unreal drummer. The show started and it was crushing. I am glad guitarist Dino Cazares was back with the band after several years away. These guys fight and argue too much.

The band waded through songs like "Shock," "Edgecrusher" and "Resurresction" off of the Obsolete album; "Fear Campaign" and "Lynchpin" (off Digimortal), "Powershifter" off 2010's Mechanize, and then they played some real old FF material "Martyr," "Leechmaster" and "Scumgrief" off of their debut album Soul Of A New Machine. I was starting to get scared that they weren't going to play my favorites off of their breakout album Demanufacture (1995), but I was needlessly worrying, because that is what they ended this badass show with. Four mindblowing tunes: "Demanufacture," "Self Bias Resistor," "Zero Signal" and last but not least, one of my favorites "Replica," off of Demanufacture, back to back, just like on the album! It was these tunes that made me a Fear Factory fan from the get-go.

The band played so good, they were in a zone. I haven't heard them sound this good in a while and the PA system in Diamonds was kickin' some ass. Even sick, I had fun.

Vocalist Burton C. Bell was in a good way as he hit pretty much every note he aimed for. His actual singing at times is what I love about Fear Factory. That he can sing when called upon. There are a few off-key moments at every Burton show, and he wasn't bad at all this night. But you have to admit, the stuff this guy sings isn't exactly easy to sing at all. I know. Some of it is hard to replicate. It takes talent to be able to pull off going from brutal screams to drawn-out melodies in a second. Burton uses his breathing technique very well, to conserve energy and to be able to hit those long melodic notes he uses. That is why Black Sabbath's bassist Geezer Butler had Burton sing on one of Geezer's GZR album. Burton was rockin', and guitarist Dino Cazares was a happy guy as he ate up the more-than-happy Louisville FF fans. Dino's signature machine gun triplets/speed guitar sound is what makes Fear Factory. The super-low-tuned seven-string guitars are crushing. Dino's sound is nothing but power. And he doesn't do solos very much, if at all. It's all pounding rhythms. The new drummer held his own, but I like Raymond's drumming! I wish they would quit arguing and reunite with Raymond. And new bassist Matt DeVries was awesome. They should keep him for good. He is a great match for FF.

The decent-sized crowd was into the music bigtime, and showed the love to these guys. The band was super tight, and FF was happy with the response on a late Sunday night. Thank god Terry booked these guys, because I really needed to get out right about this time, and I was not going to let no funky microwave sandwich stop me (in truth, it almost did). Ohhhhhhh, my poor innards are still sour.

Ville TV Interview and News:

I figured it was about time to do an inteview with Sean Saunders, drummer of Two Pump Chump and host of the new TV Program "Ville TV." Sean plays drums for Two Pump Chump (a group of super cool dudes, and I am happy to say, humble guys that are a credit to this music scene, in a time of ridiculous egos and dog-eat-dog type attitudes.) You won't find the usual douchebag rocker egos and "Clique/Friends Only" support on "Ville TV," these guys are fair and will help anyone looking for support. Sean and Co. have done some great things for this scene. Let's see what's up with the new program!!!

Eddy: Sean, tell us about "Ville TV," how you and your wife started it, and what it means to you? What is the overall goal of "Ville TV"?

Sean: "Ville TV" was a brainchild of mine for some time! I have loved Louisville ever since I moved here in the early two thousands. I met my brothers from Two Pump Chump and started in the music scene. This town is full of so much entertainment and talent that I have loved this town since the get-go! After appearing on a local program ("Den of Sin") I wanted to get into broadcasting with my really good friend Fender! Thus beginning The adventures of Fender and McLovin! We featured Louisville bands playing live on our show where we would interview them and play tons of music! It just kept getting bigger and bigger with us doing big events with Fright Night and the Paranormal conventions broadcasting live! Unfortunately creative differences sent me in a new direction, so with a four-year hold, I wanted to start a new show where we featured Louisville bands, but instead of live we play all their videos! "VilleTV" is everything you want to know about Louisville's entertainment! We want to bring back the love for unsigned entertainment! to include movies, music, art, food, and anything else you can imagine! With the addition of my beautiful wife Katie Stewart Saunders, (AKA Kat), She brings a lot of knowledge to the movie side of the show! Also. I have put together a team that is amazing! I have three cinematographers, and an editor, graphic designer, marketing director, director of photography, production supervisor and assistant, and even and audiodesigner, (all of my team are listed on our site) We just want people to love this city as we do, it has been great to us with giving us opportunities to be on camera in such great films as "Overtime the Movie" and "Intrusion Disconnected"! We are hoping to get people interested in the untold heroes of entertainment! again! Remember, the big bands you love started out unsigned!

Eddy: Name some of the bands you have featured on your program?

Sean: Two Pump Chump (obviously), Year of the Gun, 449, Boozer, Cameron Jayne, Teania Sanders, Opposeum Hollar, Black Stone Cherry, Mindset X, Bonejinn, Cages of Gold, Code Red, Dead CityRejects, Vice Tricks, Zoo Kings, Ted Stevens, Velvet Saints, Ugly, Kelly Richey Band, Talk of Spring, Signal the Revolution and many more! Any band that is local or unsigned we will play and talk about! That's what we do!

Eddy: What are your plans for the future with the show? and how can fans link up with you two and your show? What is your contact info so bands can get involved with the show?

Sean: We have just signed with a new network out of Boston. Pixelated Media is going to take us to the next level with all the shows we have lined up and huge events to include this year's Fandom Fest at the Galt House right here in the heart of Louisville! We have a ton of sponsors added to the show, which are listed on our website and we plan on taking over the airways! Working with so much great talent here in Louisville, that is a doable task! We are going to have a brand-new feature on the site that will allow people to upload videos to the site so we can take them directly from there to use for the show! "Ville TV" will air every Sunday, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Starting May 5. Our after Derby Special! Brand new season with a lot of great talent! You might even see the Great Eddy Metal scream a promo for the show! Just go to all of our sites and check out the new network! thanks Eddy and keep doing what you are doing my friend!http://villetvlive.com

http://facebook.com/villetv

http://pixelatedmedia.net

Look for all our sponsors and a complete list of services that "Ville TV" Studios has to offer!

Eddy: Thanks for your time bro, and we can't wait to see the killer stuff you got coming up for us Louisvillian rockers! Keep up the great work/attitude. We need more of that here in town.

Jackyl on Derby Eve at PHT:

Phoenix Hill Tavern has always had one cool Derby Eve Party going on. And this year promises to be lively indeed, as the Hill has brought in Jackyl to rock the Derby City on its greatest night. Outdoors, too, which is always best! So cmon out and rock out to some raunchy rock 'n' roll, Jackyl style! I've heard a bunch of people are going to this event. I'll be there, so c'mon out and have a drink or ten with me.

Unleashed, "Queen Of The Wicked " Song Review:

The band of super-talented Louevil youngsters Unleashed have just recorded three new songs at Jetlag Studios with Michael Sanders. The first song, fully mixed and mastered, is "Queen Of The Wicked" and it sounds awesome! The talent here just blows me away. It's really hard to believe they are as young as they are. The vocals of Hunter Borowick are as impressive as his guitar playing. The kid can sing some pretty hard stuff. The band utilizes both Hunter Borowicks and Elise Hagan's awesome vocals for this particular track. They switch off and it works very well for the song as a whole. I'm loving the vocal techniques used by both. Musically, this song rocks too, and has a good little heavy part in the middle that reminds me of Black Sabbath for a minute!

As usual, Hunter's guitar tones are sweet. No complaints here. No crappy cookie monster vocals. No muddy 900 stringed guitars where you cannot distinguish the notes. even. It's just good, clear, rock n' roll with actual singing. Usually people this young would be playing some trendy crap music of the day and age, but Unleashed is steeped in classic rock and general rock history, and it shows. The lyrics are well thought-out and melodic, arranged in a good way. Very good! The quality of sound at Jetlag Recording Studio is friggin' awesome. My band Year Of The Gun recorded there as well, and we highly recommend Mr Sanders. One el doucho had the nerve to say to me once, "c'mon, don't they realize there is already a band called Unleashed?" My first thought was "They are teenagers A-hole. Like they know of a German thrash band from 900 years ago that never really made it?? And you wish you could sing half as good as either of these kids."

You can see this great band on Thursday, May 2 at Phoenix Hill Tavern, opening for Framing Hanley as part of the Derby Festivities. Be early (8 p.m.) for Unleashed! You can thank me later.

The Mad Taxpayers, Impressive:

It's been some years since I saw this band play, as they are Louisville music veterans through and through. But I had the pleasure of seeing them not long ago and, boy, did they make a statement. These guys rock! Especially for a three-piece! Shaun Narron's guitar was frikkin' shredding. Dude is a rock 'n' roll guitar beast, and a true pleasure to watch perform. I could have watched Shaun play guitar for hours. Both Shaun and bassist David Pierce handle the vocals. David is a proficient bassist with huge tone, who also sings well. These guys have been around for 15 years and it shows. They got some serious tone and feel to their music as they rotate between originals and cover songs. Laying down the rock solid drums was Rob King.

If you haven't seen these guys before, or at least in a good long while like myself, then you should get out and see these guys let loose. There is a punk rock/outcast feel to these guys that I really find to be cool and different from the other clone cover bands in our hamlet. It's energy, soul and good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll with The Mad Taxpayers!!! These cats prove that you are never too old to rock out with your socks out.

Southern KY's 449 to Tour:

Remember that impressive Southern Kentucky band I reviewed several months back called 449? They are the five-piece band from Burkesville, Kentucky who are riding on a great little buzz about their band. Good vocals, a sweet-toned guitar duo, and some well-written originals with feeling. These guys have opened for Black Stone Cherry, Tremonti, Powerman5000, Adelitas Way, Trapt and are preparing to hit the road on their own tour called "Best Part Of Me Tour 2013." They will be heading to Virginia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. I have always greatly admired and respected unsigned bands who have successfully arranged their own tours. It is a major hassle and super chore just to get my guys to play an hour away! 449's tour kickoff show, and the only show in KY, will be on Friday May 24 at The Spillway in Bowling Green. Good luck to the guys on their tour!!!

Sever This Illusion, BoneJinn and E-Flat Disband:

I regret to inform you that a few Louisville original bands have decided to call it a day. Louisville heavy metal band Sever This Illusion (which has done pretty good these last few years, although they went through numerous member changes. Sometimes numerous member changes can straight-up kill a band.) and foul-mouthed, long-time rap/rock hooligans E-Flat have broken up, and the soulful hard rock band BoneJinn has been put on hiatus for a while following some issues within the band. It is unclear if they will continue on with the BoneJinn project. Man, all I can say is that it is one huge chore to try to keep everything together in a band in today's world, when everything seems against you! It takes a huge commitment and some really good luck (almost a miracle) to even keep a band going these days. Total props to those of you who keep the fires burning and follow the old show business quote "the show must go on."

Rifle News:

Louisville rock and rollers Rifle (Sean Flannery, Kenny Beckum, Jet Piston), having recently added a new, dedicated singer to their lineup (Sean Tyler), are currently hard at work recording some new tracks. A mix of exciting new songs combined with a few newly refined Rifle staples, the collection is shaping up to provide a hard rocking glimpse into the darker recesses of politics, relationships, religion, self-doubt and plain old fashioned rock and roll lust. A release date has yet to be determined, but principle recording has finished, so look for something to appear in a month or two, depending on mixing, art production, etc.

I Got Some New Venues To Check Out:

Hooray! New clubs for us original bands to play at. I have been hearing about bands playing at the newer Spinelli's location downtown on 5th street. Great pizza AND live music now? Sign my old arse up for that ride! I say it's time I head down to that location and see whats up with the stage and PA system. Hopefully the people there are cool and are willing to work with us Louisville bands for a good long while. I love Spinelli's Pizza and I rejoice to hear that live music is happening there now. This could be a great thing. Another venue I've been hearing about is The Monkey Wrench on Baxter Ave, which has been having original bands play there as well. I tried to contact the owner or manager to get him to send me his showdates for the newspaper, to do a review, and to possibly book a show or two there, but the owner Denny Humphrey said that the club is currently renovating and will be ready shortly!
