Down On The Corner

The music scene in town in October was hopping early on, with far more to go see than most of us have time and money for. Despite a slow weekend at the end of the month, things appear to be on track for a continuation of the flood of music, giving Louisville music a range of choices that almost matches the range of available great restaurants here. Keep saving those extra dollars.

Your humble editor is more-or-less back in the saddle after returning from a trip to Seville, Spain, where the weather is warmer than here and the food is completely different. In a side trip to Granada, we took a tour of Alhambra, the great Moorish mosque turned Christian palace on a hill that dominates the city and region, in the old days. That was worth the trip all by itself.

Catching up on some of what has happened this past month, we first note that Crescent Hill Radio and ARTxFM both gotten permission to broadcast on FM frequencies. Crescent Hill Radio is already broadcasting as WCHQ 100.9 FM. This is excellent news for Louisville-area musicians, as Crescent Hill Radio is dedicated to airing original music from this city and the region.

The Kentucky Music Hall of Fame has announced the 2015 induction Class Honorees. They are country duo Montgomery Gentry, Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys, singer-songwriter Larry Cordle, artist management icon Clarence Spalding, country comedian, songwriter, musician and broadcaster Pete Stamper, Kentucky legend Doc Hopkins and pioneer R&B group The Moonglows.

Scorpions frontman Klaus Meine says the band members want drummer James Kottak to return from rehab as the "great guy" they remember, according to Antimusic.com. Kottack will play on a new album, then tour with the band next year, assuming that his stint in rehab is susccessful.

The outdoor equipment company North Face has released the ad below with My Morning Jacket covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is My Land," an appeal to the working people of America to assert their rights as Americas. North Face will give a percentage to 21st Century Conservation Service Corps (up to a 1/4 a million dollars depending on the amount of downloads).

Louisville's Satellite Twin has released a new EP, "A Tower in the Right Flood," on their bandcamp site . Cassette tapes and CDs to follow.

Doug Paisley and Bonnie "Prince" Billy recorded a duet of the Paisley-penned "Until I Find You" in Louisville last spring, which features Emmett Kelly on guitar and backing vocals. The video was directed by Heather Goodchild. The song is from a two-song digital single released on iTunes.

Ferguson, Rick L., "Ricky ," 58, died in Louisville on October 12. He was a bass player who performed with Lefty and The Sneakers and Crawdad Pie, among others. His brother, Steve Ferguson, preceded him in death.

Hukle, Dan Hallard , 86, died in Louisville On October 6, 2014. He was a musician who played in various bands and artists around the Louisville area for the previous 70 years.

McGrew, Donald Ray , died in Louisville on October 7, 2014. He was a musician and songwriter

Whatley, Leonard D., "Lenny ," 74, died in Louisville in September 2014. He was a vocalist who sang with The Sultans and The Doo Wop Allstars.
