News From the Pit
Hey everybody! Well, summer is almost over and I have to say, it hasn’t been too much different from 2020, unfortunately. A little bit better musically, but not too awful much. At least I got to play out a few shows!
We'll be booking more soon, as soon as we get another 3 or 4 songs tight with our new drummer. We are making progress! I've been going out a bit more recently! I went to see the Rolling Stones Tribute's return at Louisville Billiards. Like I said, I'm not a huge Stones fan, but these Nashville guys got it going on! They Jam! I enjoy seeing them play quite a bit surprisingly.
I caught Wyld Ryde's long awaited return show at Diamond Concert Hall,along with Edgar Red, a band I have never seen before that blew me away! Impressive! As was Wyld Ryde's whole production that night. I also went to Street Grubs and Hops to see my buddies Theatre Of Crue- the Motley Crue Tribute. The fair kinda killed these shows a little bit forreal. I expected a few more peeps at Street Grubs, and Billiards. Speaking of the Fair! OMG. I went up there to grub on some fair food, and to see Jackyl, I was having a total blast with tons of friends of mine, but then a storm blew in all fast, and the security decided to evacuate everyone at the fair to Broadbent Arena. The Fair staff were rushing mfers out, and stressing about it, and had everyone tripping out or pissed that they had to give up their seats! I was like 'F**k that! I'm not going inside no stinking farm animal smelling building!' The wind outside felt great compared to working in a 120 degree building that day, for 9 hours, so I wasnt going anywhere! That's when god said 'Buuuulllllshit," and commenced to throwing down lightning bolts from a cloud that descended upon the area that looked exactly like a huge black hand of doom. I shit you not! I got picture's of it! Lightning flew, the wind kicked up several notches, and I started to change my tune. 'F**k this, I'm gettin' my fat ass outta here' I said as I headed for cover. We waited a bit under an awning, but it was still storming so I decided to go on home, full AF and wore out. The show ended up happening,shockingly! After all that commotion I didn't think no show was going down that night! No way! I'm mostly upset about not getting to finish the night hanging with my friends as planned. It's all good, I've seen Jackyl before, and I got my fair food, and I had to work really early the next morning anyways. At least y'all got your concert.
I never saw no shit like that at the fair ever before though. It was crazy! That cloud was evil looking. Everyone that saw the pic said the same. I don't know why crowds have still been so lackluster at these shows as of late, but it sucks. You guys n' gals need to get out and support these venues! Prohibition is cool, Street Grubs is always fun, 21rst Amendment, and you gotta support Louisville Billiards for giving us shows when no one else was! I still need to get out to The Enchanted Forest, and that new place called MG's Primetime Cafe. I've heard they put some money into that place and its way better than the little bar it used to be. I think I played there once a long time ago when it was called Shooters.
The point is- get out! See some music. Suppo5t these businesses! They need us. And gods knows we need the entertainment with these shitty AF last two years under our belts! I don't know why people don't go out as much anymore. Everyone is still so uptight, scared to get out,and it seems all anyone wants to do these days is stay in and argue,and screw people over. I’m so sick of it I could puke! Evil is running rampant in the hearts of humankind. People do not seem to have morals or loyalty anymore, and that makes me really sad to see what the world has come to. All the chaos in Afghanistan is truly pitiful to watch. I don't think there would ever be a successful way to exit that country, but this way was a mistake of epic proportion. I cannot imagine what the families of those slain serving their country there must be feeling. Honestly, until this Afghanistan thing that my boss at work told me about(he was an Army Sergeant who served there. He is pissed!)I had no idea it was going on, as I have not watched the news in probably 10 months. I just got tired of all that negative crap, and the sheer amount of unbridled corruption. It got to where it made me sick to even watch. So just cut that shit out of my life completely. Now its all about family, work, music, my music,and a certain outtatown blonde I've been seeing for many months now. She isn't like the rest, thats for sure, thank god, but I'm still a bit hesitant about any relationship anymore, so we will see what happens.
We are in no rush. She is a sweetheart though and we do care for each other.
Unfortunately, disappointment in people is something I’ve grown accustomed to in the last 4 or 5 years, and I now have zero tolerance for shitty disrespectful or toxic people. No matter who they are in my life! So much in fact that I have cut many many people from my life. Going ‘no-contact’ is the only way to live a toxic-free life from those people. My blocked list is looooong. Ha! Life is too short to deal with assholes! I refuse to do it. I just want to be around p++ositive decent people with at least a little bit of morals. And I will do what I have to do to keep the wrong element away, even if it breaks my heart. That is my superpower.
Strength,and willpower.
This year I have had more motivation, and determination for my health, and finances than I ever have in my life(I've done well), and I will continue on with these goals with a positive outlook. But life always throws you curve balls, one after the other. Lately I've had a few things on my mind. I’m very concerned for my dad who had to go to the hospital recently. I have one great father! He is not doing so well. I’m tough, and I’ve been through some bad shit, but facing my dad’s passing will rip another chunk out of this already shattered heart. Keep us in your thoughts.
And recently my beloved chevy HHR (that I drove all around the country in)that I use to haul gear with, was hit and totalled. Fortunately they had insurance and actually stopped, so I'll be getting another car soon. I'm upset though, me and that little car have seen some shit! Amazing places. It went over the rocky mountains like they were nothing! That car had plenty of life left. I'm pissed AF. Some people are complete idiots, and should not fucking drive, so I won't be leaving my car out front no more. How do you hit a parked car nowhere near the traffic lane? Moron. All I know is that I'm losing my reliable longtime little car, and have been stressed out majorly because I have to deal with the worlds shittiest Insurance company.
If they don't make this right, it will be a legal/PR war. Mark my words!

And I'm sure you all heard that you have to show proof of being vaccinnated or have a negative covid test results(within 72 hours) when you get in. I'll just get a test. I am not getting that shot! This should be a good time. I hope it's not as dusty this year. I was filthy two years ago when I got home at the end of the night because of the gravel, and dust on that property. Hopefully they will put down something on the ground, or do something about the dust.I much preferred the grass, and trees of champions park.
Well, that's it for me this month! It's been one hell of a month- my tripto Gatlinburg/Rockytop/Cumberland Falls, my guitar amp blew up, then the fuckery that happened to my car, and worst of all, my dad! Aye aye ayeeee. R.I.P Charlie Watts, and Eric Wagner:
The world lost two very talented musicians recently. The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts passed away. What an icon! Dude was kinda laidback, but what a drummer! And one of my favorite singers has passed away! Eric Wagner of the doom metal stoner rock band Trouble was also an icon. Trouble was a band that did not make it big, but still achieved an underground status as major badasses, and were highly respected in the doom/stoner groove metal world. Eric had that high Robert Plantish kinda voice that just cut like a knife. Dude was amazing. He played here in early August+ with his newer band The Skull, but I was sooo tired that night, I was unable to go, and now I will regret it forever. Rest In Peace guys,and thanks for daring to be different!
Hairball Coming to Louisville:
This internationally touring tribute band is supposed to be one of the best in the world, so we will finally see what all the commotion is about! They are finally coming here, and I'll be reviewing/photographing the shit. This sounds like a lot of fun. And we get to see one of Hairball's newest members, Louisville native Dave Moody, in action doing some AC/DC. Congrats to Dave. What an accomplishment. I'll see all of you hair rockers there in full Eighties attire! Wyld Ryde will be opening the show.

Saturday, October 2 at the Brown Forman Amphitheater in Waterfront Park – featuring Winger, Plush, Americandream Machine, Anemic Royalty, Native Sons, City Awake, Runaway Souls, Amongst Vultures, Scrooge Mandela, and Skipping Stone. Shinedown Review:
This was a last minute thing, as I had just gotten back from vacation, so I was not prepared to do a full-on in depth review. You get what you get! I had a few whiskeys in me and I was feeling rather spritely, soooo!
We got there early to see an opening band that was pretty good, and they laid down the groundwork for a night of good music. They reminded me of Lincoln Park or Limp Bizkit, which led to the inevitable Lincoln Bizkit and Limp Park remarks, which we ran into the ground. It's all in love, though! They had a good sound, strong guitarist, good vocals, and some neat vocal effects. Decent songwriting. We enjoyed it. Good band! Too band I couldn't find out the band members’names, though. Why aye aye?
Pop Evil came up next and did well as always. I've seen them sooo many times now. They sounded good, and the singer Leigh Kakaty was in fine form this beautiful evening on Louisville's waterfront. They know how to put on a good show! They have come a long way in the last five years. They have polished up their show as good as it has ever be. They played "Deal With The Devil," "Footsteps," quot;Breathe Again," "Trenches" and "Waking Lions.,"
Shinedown has come a long way, too, to become the powerhouse that they are today. I really don't know much about this band, other than they are one of the few newer bands that I like that I think actually sound good. I'm picky, too! But there is no mistaking the talent these guys have. Vocalist Brent Smith has a wonderful singing voice, and he seemed to be one of the nicest dudes, too, when I sorta met him at Louder than Life a few years back. He shook our (the photographers) hands in front of the stage, and was being appreciative and super nice. You really don't see that much, usually the singers are kinda dicks, so I will always remember that humble act. The lights, the stage, the music, the sounds, the crowd's reaction, Shinedown has it really going on! The crowd was into this band bigtime, and knew almost every word it seemed. Everyone but me! I reckon I'm too much of a metalhead to know too much about this rockin', but somewhat commercial band. The guitarwork of Zach Meyers is pretty, and tasteful, and yet can get downright gritty at times, almost metal. His clean sounds are outstanding I must say! Coming from a guitar nerd like me. Sick stuff fo sho!
It's a wonderful mixture of guitar tones, from which Brent Smith builds his soulful melodies. Together, these two are Shinedown! The nucleus!
They played a long long set of stuff like "Cut The cord," "Fly From The Inside," ","45," "Save Me," "Diamond Eyes," "I'll follow You," "Enemies," "Devil," "How Did You Love," "Get Up," "Bully," "Monsters," "Second Chance,", and of course their hit Lynryd Skynyrd remake, "Simple Man,", and "Sound Of Madness," before calling it a night. I was having fun and didn't wanna go, but I was hot, sweaty and still tired from that long ass drive, so I hobbled home, took a shower, then crawled into bed with a lil' buzz and was happy. It was a last minute dealio, but I'm glad we went! I'm looking forward to more Danny Wimmer Presents concerts at the Waterfront. This is just the beginning! These people know their stuff, and I have a good relationship with them. So more power to WP! Keep'em coming. We are ready!

Soulfly Coming!!
Wednesday, September 8 at Diamond Concert Hall. This should be fun! It's been a while since I've seen ole Max in action. Twill rock! I had the privilidge of seeing Sepultura in 1990 at their heyday. I remember it being an incredible show. Opening the show is locals Eulogy In Blood, and Tetrasteede.
Wyld Ryde Returns w/ Edgar Red Review:
I went up to the return show, and had a pretty fun night. My car had just been totalled, so I needed a drink! I had a Pepsi. Ha! Wyld Ryde has had a helluva year, and this show was what they needed! Healing from the tragic accident earlier this year at Billiards, is almost complete, and it's back to business for these hardworking guys. These guys are the hardest working original band in town!
They have apparently sunk a shitload of money into the Wyld Ryde endeavor, and they are laying it all on the line. I so respect that! They got their own bus with their pictures on the side (it looks cool!), huge, neat-looking banners, stage props, tons of merch, and even got half-naked chicks who dance onstage like Crue's Video of "Girls Girls Girls." They got stuff. But do they nave the goods to back all this up? Well, duh. Wyld Ryde is musically a no frills rock n' roll rollercoaster of energetic rock, and metal. The music varies from ballads to fast thrashy groovin' riffs like the one I liked quite a bit "Life On The Road," I think it was called.+ That's probably one of my faves by them. That catchy speedy thrashy riff, and the powerful chorus. Good stuff! I also like "Nothing To Hide.,"
However, the soundman was not Wyld Ryde's ally this night it seems, as there was several sound messups that were a bit much. First, Tommy Blitz's guitars were soooo low for the first few songs, you could barely hear him at all, and I was close to him. I'm a fucking guitarist myself, and I was thinking "WTF.," You gotta have Tommy well up in the mix! Dude is the lead guitarist! Those riffs coming from Tommy's badass Engl amp (I got two myself) has to be heard! Finally he was turned up properly so you could hear him, thank god. Secondly, a drummer friend of mine and the bands mentioned the drum toms were way low in the mix. I'll e honest, I didn't notice, till my buddy pointed it out, and he was correct!
Kidd's drums were low in the mix. Again, WTF! You got a monster like Michael Kidd behind the kit,killing it, and he is being restrained? My buddy just shook his head disappointed. It's a good thing Kidd hits hard, or you mighta not heard him as well. Then you got ol' Chiefster, who was rockin', but unfortunately whose vocals were muddy and had too much gain on them or something. It wasn't clear. Distorted AF. The first bands vocals sounded great! WTF happened? Even Tommy's wife noticed that fact when I talked to her. She wasn't happy at all and was grilling me for my input. But other than that, the band sounded good. I didn't hear no fuckup's, and the Mickster was rockin' bigtime on his chair. Mick is coming into his own as a bassist, and was having a ball up there letting loose! The band tore through a long set of energetic and fist pumping material. Chief's vocals were well done, and it impresses me that he plays and sings at the same time. Some of the faster riffs and the singing required at the same time are not easy, like the "Life On The Road," song. You can tell he has been playing a loooong time, because he oozes confidence. He can also get kinda up there on the high notes when he chooses. It's good to have that option. A lot of singers don't! Overall it was a good show and I'm glad this one went down as planned. I finally got to see them once again! These guys will be opening for Hairball on December 17 at Old Foresters Paristown Hall. Be early for the Ryde!
I cannot continue without mentioning the opener Edgar Red. You all know I love stoner groove, and doom metal, and this Louisville band, that I had never seen, pretty much blew me away. Guitarist/vocalists Matt "Red," Moore is a monster! Vocally, and on guitar! The riff's of Edgar Red are aged in oldschool rock and metal barrell's of good unwholesome fun. The riffs are catchy AF, and the tone of Red's guitar is sick. Dude is bluesy, doomy, classic rockish, or he can shredd like a MFer, dawg likes to run the whole sixstring musical gauntlet. Then he opens his mouth, and a voice comes out that just commands you watch and listen. He has soul, he has feeling, and he has the highs that can make you never have children again. A dude with his nuts in a vice can't get that high! When I was in Colorado for two weeks, I couldn't even get that high! Such an excellent singer too. Reminds me of Chris Cornell. And that is saying something! I'll be honest once again, it takes a lot to really impress me! Do you know how many local bands I've heard, booked,reviewed, played on radio, seen? A shitload! But I was not going to+ miss a single song of this band after I heard the first two. Every song was good. Drummer Ryan Chadwick was a very good strong drummer as he laid down the soulful beats that complimented Red 100%. And bassist Mack Kiefer was well-schooled at the art of bottom end basslove. Together these three cats are a force! This was my introduction to Edgar Red, and I wanna know more. I'm gonna go see them again soon. If I had to have a favorite NEW original band in town, it's probably these guys for sure. Well, new to me anyways!
So if you like rock with groove, excellent vocals, well thought out lyrics, and some mean guitar, check out some Edgar Red. It's sick! Ol' Red is gonna make some noise that I predict a lot of people will hear! Well done fellas!
Metalfest 2021- Props:
Wow. Allen Ashbaugh did it again! He pulled off another successful Metalfest at an all-new location. I liked the spot! The stage was much better, the sound was better, and there were lights this time (I was fucking up last time because my old blind ass couldn't see!) I love playing benefit shows, especially one with a cause such as this! Makes me think of late Louisville musicians Ryan Preston, and Kevin McCreery, whose lives were taken much too soon, by Cancer. So F**K YOU CANCER!
Mucho props to Allen Ashbaugh, Mike Taylor, The County Line Swinging Doors,all the folks who helped (sorry if I miss anyone, I know the list is long), and –of course - all you bands who played!
All you bastards helped raise over 10k to give to the cause! That's great! More than any of my Rock For Kosair Annual hauls!

Up Close With A True Music Fan
Louisville's Greatest Music Fan/Supporter? Meet Harold Garland:Sometimes you run across people in life who inspire, and like to spread happiness. In all my years I have never seen a local music supporter like Harold Garland and his lovely wife Angela. It's truly a trip the way this guy takes music to heart and puts so much back into it, and to the people who play it. He collects items, drumsticks, picks,autographs, whatever! This is a fan that makes you feel good about what you do. I have seen Harold do this to sooo many bands, too! I thought "this guy deserves some love!" So here we are. I'm going to ask Harold some questions, as to his history and likes. Enjoy! This is one hella cool dude.
Eddy – Where did you get passion for local original music? And when did you become so supportive? Harold- My love of music 1st came from my uncle Howard who took me to see my first concert in market Square arena in Indy which was Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood tour, and I was hooked. But when I started helping my best friend Chad Monk with his local band VIKEN that made me realize the struggles and joys local bands go thru to just play, let alone make money and I couldn't stop going to shows. I can't play any instruments, so I felt if I recorded and help put it out for others to see and hear it could help the bands get their music out to others, so if I say I'm going to a show or it's in my calendar, I'm here I don’t click.I'm going to a show then not show up or buy tickets and not go. Bands need that support of people going to shows and they really do appreciate it and means a lot to them. My wife Angela and I do what we can from buying merch, doing videos or just helping spread the bands name or message. Nothing better than live music and the atmosphere and the people you meet and to become friends and meeting the artist is amazing and an honor that can't be topped and fills our music room with our love for these bands and artist local is truly where it starts everyone starts there.

Harold-Louisville is so jammed with local bands that are the real deal and can make it whatever that means some of my favorites are Wyld Ryde,Untold Rellik, Skipping Stone, Year Of The Gun, Layne's Calling, 3DR,Hidden Foundation, Juke Joint Revival, Mr. Lugosi, The Jim Harralson,Boombox Poets, Slokill, are some of the ones we follow most videos on my YouTube page are bands from Louisville Louisville is like our 2nd home and love coming to the city and have some of the best restaurants around. Harold- Mercury Ballroom, The Louisville Palace, Diamond Concert Hall, Street Grubs, and Hops there are so many places some I haven't even got to yet. Yet! Great venues, great people, great music, and it doesn't get any better than Louisville I believe. I just love it, and the bands who make it happen!Fender's Den Of Sin Receives an Award:
Fender recently received an award from Maxwell's House Of Music for bring so much music to our community. Cool! It is a lovely plaque with his name on it. A nice award that will no doubt go on his wall. Fender deserves it. Congrats bro!
Mud Creek, and Laynes Calling Review:
I was at 21rst Amendment Tavern recently to check out some live music. A band from Fort Worth was playing and, boy, were they good! Mud Creek is their name, and these cats got one great sound! Very strong vocals, and catchy riffs, and great songwriting are going to take these Indiana boys far I'm thinking! They got some good shows under their belt! I was very impressed. Nice guys too. I want to see these guys again when I'm not so buzzed. Then I finally got to see Laynes Calling. Well, for a little bit anyways. They went up and was tearing it up pretty good. But a few songs into the set they called it a night. I don't think they were too happy with the turnout and the late time they got onstage. It's true the turnout was bad that night. The turnout for both shows I attendedthat weekend were sad! Not good. I felt bad for the bands. Especially Mud Creek, who drove several hours. What I did hear of Laynes Calling sounded good, though! I wanted to hear the full set. Nice gritty gutteral vocals from Joey Cox that reminded me of Godsmack a little,and some nice guitar playing from Chadwick Clay. Pryor set the tone for some metal riffage with groove. Pretty crunchy sound there, bub! Drummer Michael Preston Calvert was awesome on drums, and was like a beast uncaged. Jacob Wilkinson did a fine job on bass as well. There must be something about these guys because they have been doing well,and working hard to get the name out there, but unfortunately I didn't get to hear enough of them to do an adequate review, so I'll just have to catch another show/full set! Our scene is just still a little lackluster thesedays, as no one hardly goes out that much anymore. It's like pulling teeth! Hell, I was surprised my band had such a strong crowd opening for Enuff Znuff in July! Hopefully you peeps will start getting out to these shows more. I know you folks are probably every bit as busy as I am, but we gotta show these badass bands some love! Two shows back to back that had a lame crowd! WTF. C'mon people.

Yup,tis true. Primus, Wolfmother, and The Sword live at the PNC Pavilion. Sounds like a pretty good show. Maybe I'll see if I can get y'all some free tickets. We'll do another contest. It's been a long time!
Native Sons Review:
I finally got to see this new Louisville band in action, and I am impressed. These cats got the goods. The sound? Hmmmnnnn. Let's see. To me, it's an earlier Alice
In Chainsy sound, but maybe a lil happier and more commercial, with tons of groove, hooky melodies, and good vocals. Maybe a little bit of an Eighties vibe thrown in at times. There is also a bit of a pop element, but in a good way. Vocalist Ashton Blake has a higher pitched vocal range, but he works it well, and the man can actually sing pretty well. At one point he hit some really high notes. One dude in the audience said "damn, that sounds like some King Diamond vocals!," Yes, it was a high pitched note he hit, but in no way reminded me of King Diamond!
It was a good note though! I couldn't do it! Ashton sounded great on the Dio cover of "Holy Diver," Guitarist Michael Bowman, from Detroit, has got a great guitar sound,pushing good rock rhythm tones and blistering leads all into one assault. His solo's are tasty, and melodic, and have that epic classic rock feel. Dude can shred when he wants to. Easy n' slow sometimes, shredding solo's that leave yer jaw on the floor the next,alternating between one hooky riff to the next. All the riffs were good! Bassist Travis Meredith is a skilled bassist as he laid down the bottom end like a pro. I loved the basswork on their cover of "Radar Love." He nailed it. The fill in drummer, a dude named Jose, was very good as well. Y'all should keep ol Jose! Dawg was killin' it. Together this original band has all the making of a band that can and wil+l go places. They write good songs. They already have several nice shows at festivals and stuff, so the best of luck to these guys. I dig their music quite a bit, and I'm kinda a pickymfer, so that says a lot! Check out Native Sons. They are a band to +be on the lookout for!
Prohibition Distillery Bar Review:
Ok,I admit it. I didn't know shit about this place ‘till I gotthere. Turns out it is the old Brewery Thunderdome venue! I went to see a show there recently, and was transported back in time over 20 years to the Thunderdome days when Korn, Type O Negative,Judas Priest, Soulfly, and Megadeth (who I brought out on stage when I was with the Fox) were top acts playing there. It's different now of course. It's cut up into different areas now, but the feel and potential is still there. I can feel it! The nice lady in charge there gave us a tour, and she really truly wants to get the place going strong again. It was dead when we were there for that show. Dead AF. It would be a chore to make that place happening once again,but I think it can be done, if you have the right folks working on it. I think it could be a potential new venue for my Rock For Kosair Benefit, should I decide to give it another go. I see the potential! But we would need all of you mofo's to make this work. I will be meeting with them soon, and I will keep you informed. Hopefully things can be worked out, and we can all help the poor kids once again for Christmas. But I'm telling you right now, we gotta get word out about this place, and try to revive the Phoenix Hill area once again. Now is when we would really need you people to get out and support these places. That turnout for that show I went to there was pathetic! I know you people can do better. The goal is to have another Phoenix Hill Tavern type venue, with multiple stages, for our music scene. And this could be it! IF you act, that is.
