Twas The Night The Battery Got Changed

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

It was a unique night mixed with an equal amount of booze and different variations of rock n roll. I didn’t get drunk. No way. Now I am sitting at my computer at 0400 and asking for everyone’s patience as I gather my thoughts and try to interpret them as they I think they would represent the general consensus of 9Volt Revolt’s fan base. It was a great ending to a great Louisville based band, but a new beginning for the new project. The former band that we now know as 9Volt Revolt wasted no time to introducing new vocalist Jazz Floyd to the new project. We now have to wait for the the naming of the new project. Several suggestions, although I don’t believe to be realistic were suggested on www.louisvillemojo.com. I’m sure I will be one of the first to hear the new name and will post it on here once it’s decided. Nonetheless, look out for the May Issue of Louisville Music News to have a story on it, with the full version being posted here at scuttlebutt shortly thereafter.

Oh yes, Sonia says “Free Joey Arena” ………… whatever that means.

Asleep Will Keep You Awake.

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Have you ever seen a band before that while you were watching them play, you found yourself tapping your feet to the beat, or playing air drums with your fingers? I did recently to a band called Asleep from Youngstown, OH. They recently performed at Phoenix Hill Tavern on Saturday 24MAR07 at an event hosted by Bizkit Promotions who has been partly responsible for their upsurge into the Louisville Music Scene. Also paving the way for Asleep is Louisville native Scott Frazier of Overtone Music Group and Rick Smith of Wild Justice who both head up their management team. As some of you may know, Scott Frazier brought Louisville’s own FLAW into the mainstream several years ago and is currently working with them again on their recent reunion. Rick Smith on the other hand also manages Aerosmith, Seether, Smile Empty Soul, and Days Of The New.

Asleep’s style of music is very different because of their diversity of musical influences. As much as I hate to compare one band to another, their style is reminiscent of Pink Floyd, Thursday, or even At The Drive In, all of which they claim as influences on their website. The entire band collectively contributes to an upbeat performance with an enthusiastic stage presence and songs that keep you guessing what direction it’s going. Probably the biggest takeaway I was left with was the way in which some of the songs were arranged. There were lots of changeups and some pretty crazy sound effects from a talented keyboardist and a guitar player who likes to use his pedals to entrance your mind. The lead singer has a very high pitched voice that brings a lot of energy and emotion to their music as well.

Asleep is definitely a band that will make their way in the Emo music scene given their obvious musical talent and the afore mentioned promotional and management resources they have supporting them. Speaking of supporting them, if you’re interested in checking them out for yourself, here is their next Louisville dates:

27 APRIL 2007 Headliners Music Hall

5 MAY 2007 Expo 5

25 MAY 2007 Phoenix Hill Tavern

2 Pump Chump is Too Drunk Too Die.

First off, this is long overdue. And since this is my first time writing for LMN (and hopefully not the last), I’m thrilled to be writing about these fools. And don’t get me wrong, that’s exactly what these guys are………FOOLS, both on and off stage. But that is one of their many hidden talents as entertainers and musicians, and it’s a good enough reason for you to get out and see them the next time they play. I’ve seen a lot of bands over the years from Louisville but these guys are definitely one of the most entertaining group of musicians in the city, and there is a lot of talent in Louisville. I recently went and saw them again for like the 100th time at a live taping for Artists International Independent Radio, which was streamed live on the web at aiiradio.net It’s all done from a basement in a home in south Louisville which for a few hours seemed more like a venue. There was about 20 or 30 people all packed in to the studio basement drinking, eating, smoking, laughing and screaming for and at 2PC. Of course 2PC was screaming right back at them as well. Cool stuff.

Just for the record, 2PC is no newcomer to Louisville’s music scene. Forming in 1999 “from 3 lesbians and a can of tuna-fish at a Billy Graham Crusade” 2PC has managed build a steady fan base of redneck maniacs just as F’in crazy as they are by playing all the major 502 venues, opening for a variety of national acts including Quite Riot and Black Stone Cherry, and playing a few music festivals like LRS Fest. They also have a full length album titled “Deep in the Shag” that is basically any given trailer park’s documented audio biography. I’m not sure if they are glorifying that lifestyle or making a mockery of it. Whatever there intent was, I’m sure it was a collaboration of massive amounts of cheap beer, funny cigarettes, and of course a careful selection of actual life events that would eventually give birth to lyrics for songs dubbed Trailer Park Love, More Than a Lesbian, Can’t be Bought, Underage Girls,& Knocked Up Lisa just to name a few.

Back to their show. Even though it was an acoustic set, it lacked none of their trademark enthusiasm for playing. On top of that it gave their drummer Sean a chance to walk around the crowd of people saying “Good Game” while smacking their ass. But they could really careless to who or how many people they are playing for because it’s all about having fun while playing. These guys definitely know how to have fun to. From my experience there is usually some kind of grab-assin going on with those guys before, during, and after the show. Its just like that with them. I’m not under the impression that they are writing songs to win a Grammy or any other over rated trophy for being musicians. They simply love playing. That’s it. The when and the where always seems to be irrelevant so long as they have some cheap beer and an audience. Speaking of which, I suggest you readers become one of their audience members ASAFP (as soon as F’ing possible). Visit their website at www.twopumpchump.com to find out where they are playing next.

They used to have these T-shirts that said, “Your either with Two Pump Chump or with the terrorists.” It’s true. If you can’t find a reason to like these guys then you must be a terrorist………and I’m with Two Pump Chump. Period.
